Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia, is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River. The District is therefore not a part of any state. 2. Washington had an estimated population of 693,972 as of July 2017. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington metropolitan area, of which the District is the principal city, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country. 3. Before 1961, residents of Washington, D.C. couldn’t vote in presidential elections because of the Electoral College. The number of electoral votes each state gets depends on how many senators and members of the House of Representatives it has. Since D.C. isn’t a state, it has no representatives in Congress, so for years D.C. couldn’t take part in elections. The 23rd Amendment to the Constitution (passed in 1961) let D.C. have the number of electoral votes it would have if it were a state. 4. The Washington Monument used to be the tallest structure in the world. The Washington Monument is actually two different colors. The Washington National Monument Society ran out of funding during construction, so the project was put on hold. Eventually, the U.S. government took over 25 years later, but it used marble from a different quarry, which is why the bottom looks slightly different from the top. 5. If you’re in the White House and need to answer nature’s call, I’m sorry to report that you only have a choice of 35 different bathrooms. All but one president called the White House home: George Washington. He did lay the cornerstone in 1792, but died less than a year before completion, in 1799. 6. The Library of Congress (LOC) is the research library that officially serves the United States Congress and is the de facto national library of the United States. Its collections include research materials from all parts of the world and in more than 450 languages. It contains over 38 million books and other printed materials, 3.6 million recordings, 14 million photographs, 5.5 million maps, 8.1 million pieces of sheet music and 70 million manuscripts, 5711 incunables, which are books printed before 1501, and 122.810.430 special collections. 7. The Smithsonian Institution, established on August 10, 1846 "for the increase and diffusion of knowledge," is a group of museums and research centers administered by the Government of the United States. The institution is named after its founding donor, British scientist James Smithson, who never actually set foot in the United States. In this video you can find seven little known facts about Washington, the state. Keep watching and subscribe, as more states will follow! You can now support this channel via Patreon, by accessing the link bellow. Thank you! https://www.patreon.com/7facts Learn, Share, Subscribe US States & Territories https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbZJ71IJGFRT2EjuHJUt4-YZ59SZNc8ch 206 Countries in One Series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbZJ71IJGFRR54b-LlPPw6YcUFiBEEP6G Social Media: https://twitter.com/Sebastian2Go https://www.facebook.com/official7facts ------------------------------------------------ More information about the video content bellow: 1. Washington was named after President George Washington by an act of the United States Congress during the creation of Washington Territory in 1853. The territory was originally to be named "Columbia", for the Columbia River and the Columbia District, but Kentucky representative Richard H. Stanton found the name too similar to the District of Columbia (the national capital, itself containing the city of Washington) and proposed naming the new territory after President Washington. 2. Washington State is 52 percent forest. The state is home to an incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna, including some of the oldest trees in the country. If you’re a lover of the great outdoors (or just fascinated by very old things), Grove of the Patriarchs trail near Mount Rainier is the perfect place to see some of the state’s oldest trees: Several are over a thousand years old and more than 25 feet in circumference. 3. If you’re hankering for a damn fine cup of coffee and a slice of cherry pie, Twede’s Cafe in North Bend has both. It’s also the cafe that was used to film the Double R Diner scenes in David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Seattle is, of course, famous for launching the grunge movement and the careers of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. But a wide range of musicians come from Washington, including guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, hip hop legend Sir Mix-a-Lot, and singer/actor Bing Crosby. 4. Now the biggest online retailer in America, Amazon.com was started by Jeff Bezos in a converted garage in Bellevue, just outside of Seattle, in 1994. Their move to Seattle proper marked the start of a golden era for startups in the Pacific Northwest (and in Seattle, specifically). Outside of Silicon Valley, Seattle has become one of the fastest growing tech job markets in America in recent years. 5. Nowadays, it feels like there’s a Starbucks on every street corner in America. But the company started out in 1971 with just one store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. It remained a local establishment until the 1980s when it was purchased by Howard Shultz’s coffee company Il Giornale. It opened its first stores outside of Washington in 1987 in Chicago and Vancouver, Canada. Shultz remains CEO to this day. 6. Even though Olympia is Washington’s capital, Seattle is its most populated city. In fact, close to 60 percent of Washington residents live in the Seattle metropolitan area. In 1962, the Century 21 Expo (also known as the Seattle World’s Fair) was held in Seattle, where the Space Needle was built for the event. 7. While Washington is home to many awe-inspiring forests, the Ginkgo Petrified Tree Forest in Eastern Washington is one of the most unique. In the 1930s, highway workers digging up land for a new road found their progress hindered by pieces of fallen tree as hard as rock. These were the fossilized—or petrified—remains of ancient trees. The government decided to set the land aside for a historic preserve, and founded the Ginkgo Petrified Tree Forest, which soon became famous for its fascinating fossils, and for its Wanapum petroglyphs (Wanapum carvings dating back centuries). Even as American values change and history is continually revised by new discoveries, George Washington remains one of the most venerated figures in human history. A highly esteemed soldier and general who became a pioneer politician, he appeals both to the intellectual types and those who liked to prove their worth through combat. Unfortunately, for all his acclaim, the casual reader only gets a vague impression of what he was like as a human. It’s unfortunate, because it leaves out a number of very interesting aspects of the life of a fascinating (if deeply flawed) man. Unfortunate for the average person, that is, not for George Washington. His legacy has literally been set in stone. So, let’s get to learning more about America’s most prominent Founding Father. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Help us translate our videos: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_queue?msg=10&tab=0 - Learn more why you might want to help: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6052538 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! In this eye-opening talk, veteran investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson shows how astroturf, or fake grassroots movements funded by political, corporate, or other special interests very effectively manipulate and distort media messages. Sharyl Attkisson is an investigative journalist based in Washington D.C. She is currently writing a book entitled Stonewalled (Harper Collins), which addresses the unseen influences of corporations and special interests on the information and images the public receives every day in the news and elsewhere. For twenty years (through March 2014), Attkisson was a correspondent for CBS News. In 2013, she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Investigative Journalism for her reporting on “The Business of Congress,” which included an undercover investigation into fundraising by Republican freshmen. She also received Emmy nominations in 2013 for Benghazi: Dying for Security and Green Energy Going Red. Additionally, Attkisson received a 2013 Daytime Emmy Award as part of the CBS Sunday Morning team’s entry for Outstanding Morning Program for her report: “Washington Lobbying: K-Street Behind Closed Doors.” In September 2012, Attkisson also received an Emmy for Oustanding Investigative Journalism for the “Gunwalker: Fast and Furious” story. She received the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Investigative Reporting for the same story. Attkisson received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2009 for her exclusive investigations into TARP and the bank bailout. She received an Investigative Emmy Award in 2002 for her series of exclusive reports about mismanagement at the Red Cross. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Unusual Facts about George Washington George Washington is a name known by every American man, woman, and child, and is of all other figures throughout the history of the country the one that is perhaps the most commonly associated with the very concept of America. George Washington trivia is American trivia, because it was Washington that would oversee the very formation and foundation of the country, and without whom there never would have been presidency. The first president of the United States of America was George Washington, and learning enough to pass a George Washington quiz is something that almost every one who goes through the American school system will need to do, so hear are some interesting facts about our first President. Its important to note when studying George Washington trivia that not only is his role as the first president extremely important, but equally important was his role as the commander of the Continental army. It was as the leader of the army that the successful American revolution was led, and although his time as President was important, it was his time as the leader of that army which allowed for there to even be a Presidency. When the American revolution broke out, many claim that Washington had no intention of being named the commander in chief of the armies, however, his reputation and his military expertise quickly earned him the nomination for that post from John Adams. George Washington trivia will mention some of his legendary exploits as the commander of the American forces, such as the winter he and his men were made to spend camped in Valley Forge, a winter so harsh it claimed the lives of half his men, yet he was still able to emerge and fight to further victories at Monmouth. A George Washington quiz will show that many of the modern traditions and laws surrounding the presidency stem from the rule of the first president. Desperately wanting to avoid any connection or association with the trappings of the European royals, he insisted on being addressed as Mr. President rather than any more elaborate title that might have been suggested. Washington served two terms as president, but also refused to run for a third term despite being asked, something that led to anyones presidency being limited to two terms at first by custom, and then later by law with the addition of the 22nd amendment to the constitution. Washington, D.C., is located in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. East Coast. Due to the District of Columbia retrocession, the city has a total area of 177.0 square kilometres, of which 158.1 square kilometres is land and 18.9 square kilometres (10.67%) is water. Washington had an estimated population of 681,170 as of July 2016. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than 1M during the workweek. The city is named in the honor of president George Washington. The state of Washington is the only state to be named after a United States president. Source: Wikipedia Did you know! The term 'DC' in Washington DC means The District of Colombia. Colombia is a country at the northern tip of South America that named for Christopher Columbus. Keep in mind! The Colombia hadn't its own flag until 1938. Washington DC contains many cites of interest including Smithsonian Institution Museum White House Iconic home of America's president United States Capitol Legendary home of the U.S. legislature National Mall Historic memorial parks on a promenade Lincoln Memorial Marble monument to the 16th president National Museum of Natural History Renowned collection of natural wonders National Air and Space Museum Exhibit-filled trip across the universe Washington Monument Towering tribute to George Washington Despite all other alphabetical streets, there is no J street in the Washington DC. The reason is that DC designer, Pierre L’Enfant hated John Jay, who was the nation’s chief justice and therefore left out J street. But it’s really because in the 18th century, I and J were almost interchangeable. The United States Capitol, often called the Capitol Building or Capitol Hill, is the home of the United States Congress. The original building was completed in 1800 and was subsequently expanded, particularly with the addition of the massive dome. World Leading innovators like Microsoft's Bill Gates and Paul Allen, Starbucks' Howard Schultz, wireless pioneers the McCaw family, and the Boeing family -- live in Washington State. That's why the state leads the country in technology industry employment as well. "Tales from the Far Side" cartoonist Gary Larson is also a Washington native. The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800 except George Washington, who actually built the White House. The reason behind the fact is that the president died just one year before its completion. The Washington Monument, one of Washington, D.C.’s, most iconic structures, as well as its tallest, opened to the public 125 years ago, on October 9, 1888 tributed to America’s first president George Washington. The Tower took a century to plan and construct and also ended up looking much different than the architect’s original design. The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world. It has more than 158 million items sitting on about 838 miles of bookshelves. That includes more than 36 million books and other print materials, 3.5 million recordings, 13.7 million photographs, 5.5 million maps, 6.7 million pieces of sheet music and 69 million manuscripts. You can also find a top secret FBI interrogation manual at the Library of Congress. (Note: If you have any Fact or suggestion, feel free to contact us...) Like the video! I Have a Dream Speech Martin Luther King's Address at March on Washington August 28, 1963. Washington, D.C. When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!"

President GEORGE WASHINGTON'S FAREWELL ADDRESS - FULL Audio Book | Greatest Audio Books - Washington's Farewell Address (issued as a public letter in 1796) was one of the most influential statements of republicanism. Drafted primarily by Washington himself, with help from Hamilton, it gives advice on the necessity and importance of national union, the value of the Constitution and the rule of law, the evils of political parties, and the proper virtues of a republican people. He called morality "a necessary spring of popular government". He said, "Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle." Washington's public political address warned against foreign influence in domestic affairs and American meddling in European affairs. He warned against bitter partisanship in domestic politics and called for men to move beyond partisanship and serve the common good. He warned against "permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world", saying the United States must concentrate primarily on American interests. He counseled friendship and commerce with all nations, but warned against involvement in European wars and entering into long-term "entangling" alliances. The address quickly set American values regarding foreign affairs.(Summary from Wikipedia.org) - SUBSCRIBE to Greatest Audio Books: http://www.youtube.com/GreatestAudioBooks - Become a FRIEND: Facebook: http://www.Facebook.com/GreatestAudioBooks Google+: - READ along by clicking (CC) for Closed Caption Transcript! - LISTEN to the entire audiobook for free! Wikipedia will black out the English language version of its website on Wednesday to protest anti-piracy legislation under consideration in Congress, the foundation behind the popular community-based online encyclopaedia said in a statement. The website will go dark for 24 hours in an unprecedented move that brings added muscle to a growing base of critics of the legislation. Wikipedia is considered one of the internet's most popular websites, with millions of visitors daily. "If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States," the Wikimedia foundation said.

Merrilee Proffitt Senior Program Officer OCLC Research Sara Snyder Webmaster Smithsonian Institution Project Briefing (Presentation) Coalition for Networked Information (CNI) Fall 2012 Membership Meeting December 10-11, 2012 Washington, DC http://cni.org/mm/fall-2012/ It used to be that if you wanted information or answers to questions, you went to a library. In an era of increased reliance on major network hubs, information seekers increasingly turn to the web for answers. Therefore it is vital that libraries and archives ensure that their collections, or information about their collections, are easily discoverable on the open web. As the 6th most accessed website globally, Wikipedia is a natural place for cultural heritage institutions to expose their collections. Wikipedia articles receive a lot of web love: they are highly ranked by search engines; snippets from pages are incorporated into Google's Knowledge Graph, and are pulled in by services like Facebook, filling in missing content. How can libraries and archives mesh with Wikipedia? This presentations examines how OCLC Research, Smithsonian Institution, and others are connecting researchers to unique materials through Wikipedia; it highlights the special role library data can play in Wikipedia, examines how Wikipedia data may be useful to libraries and scholarly institutions, introduces Wikipedia's GLAM-Wiki initiative, and includes discussion about ways that information professionals can work collaboratively with the World's Largest Free Encyclopedia. Powered by http://www.tanmarket.com - The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800, and the term is often used by journalists as a metonym to refer to the acts of the President and his top advisors. The house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone in the Neoclassical style. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901. Eight years later, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office which was eventually moved as the section was expanded. The third-floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. Source: wikipedia.org http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House

Taken from Wikipedia: The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear was a gathering that took place on October 30, 2010 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.. The rally was led by Jon Stewart, host of the satirical news program The Daily Show, and Stephen Colbert, in-character as a conservative political pundit. About 215,000 people attended the rally, according to aerial photography analysis by AirPhotosLive.com for CBS News. The rally was a combination of what initially were announced as separate events: Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and Colbert's counterpart, the March to Keep Fear Alive. Its stated purpose was to provide a venue for attendees to be heard above what Stewart described as the more vocal and extreme 15--20% of Americans who "control the conversation" of United States politics, the argument being that these extremes demonize each other and engage in counterproductive actions, with a return to sanity intended to promote reasoned discussion. Despite Stewart's insistence to the contrary, news reports cast the rally as a spoof of Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally and Al Sharpton's Reclaim the Dream rally.

Wikimania 2011 Closing ceremony: 02:45 - Plenary by Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia: "The State of the Wiki" Ten years ago, Jimmy Wales typed Hello World! into a wiki, and Wikipedia was born. Today, Wikipedia is the fifth most-popular site on the internet, and the Wikimedia projects are collectively one of the world's largest and most useful repositories of human knowledge. In recent years though, we've begun to see signs that the Wikimedia community is less healthy than it used to be. The number of active editors is slowly declining, and community members report increased bureaucracy, unwelcoming behaviour, and growing barriers to participation. In this talk, Jimmy Wales will call for a renewed commitment to openness, that will revitalize the projects. 50:00 - Wikimania 2012 Washington D.C. Olbermann introduced Liebermans keynoter entrance as one of the great political reversals. Indeed, once the Democrats VP nominee and now an escapee from McCains short list to be the Republican VP (Who would want to lose twice?), Lieberman worked for a few paragraphs like a Democrat to lay out massive problems deriving from two Republican terms. People out there face big and real problems, he said, naming fear of losing jobs, worry about health insurance, threats from abroad. Feeble applause as he stretched his face wider and declared that the people wanted solutions but Washington gave out nothing but senseless partisanship. He went on to misquote George Washington on the issue, and here my notes give out, but Keith Olbermann later said the First President had not merely condemned partisanship but in fact thought all political parties were anathema. http://miami-dade-dems.blogspot.com/2008/09/republican-convention-speeches-inspire.html Washington's Farewell Address (issued as a public letter in 1796) was one of the most influential statements of American political values. Drafted primarily by Washington himself, with help from Hamilton, it gives advice on the necessity and importance of national union, the value of the Constitution and the rule of law, the evils of political parties, and the proper virtues of a republican people. While he declined suggested versions that would have included statements that there could be no morality without religion, he called morality "a necessary spring of popular government". He called for an America wholly free of foreign attachments, saying the United States must concentrate primarily on American interests. He counseled friendship and commerce with all nations, but warned against involvement in European wars and entering into long-term "entangling" alliances. The address quickly set American values regarding religion and foreign affairs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington#Farewell_Address Sarah Palin's event in Clearwater, Florida, this morning. She was heartily introduced there by John McCain's pal Joe Lieberman. The former Democrat is a very strange figure these days, far from his moorings in the Democratic Party. But you can see how his personal friendship with McCain, and his genuine support for the Iraq war, might cause him to help out his buddy on the stump. It was jarring, however, to hear Lieberman's full-throated endorsement of Sarah Palin, a woman with whom he has no prior relationship, and whose policy credentials you have to think the wonky 20-year Senator would find suspect in any other context. "She's so strong, she's so capable, she's so competent," Lieberman told the cheering crowd. Emphasizing her "faith," he added that she is someone who "with your help--and God's help--will be the next vice president of the United States." More big cheers. The religiousity continued when Palin bounded onstage. She commented right away on the number of American flags in the crowd, declaring: "God bless America--you guys get it!" And then it was on with the attacks on Obama: "There are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are some candidates, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change," Palin said. She went on to reiterate charges that Obama is friendly with terrorists (Bill Ayers), wants America to lose in Iraq, and smears US troops in Afghanistan. http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_stump/archive/2008/10/06/lieberman-quot-competent-quot-palin-will-win-quot-with-god-s-help-quot.aspx

Washington DC could have been the location of the prime meridian of the world. Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant specified the first meridian in his 1791 "Plan of the city intended for the permanent seat of the government of the United States . . .". In 1793 Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson surveyed and marked with a wooden post the southwest vertex of L'Enfant's triangle, establishing the second Washington meridian, the one through the President's house. The wooden post was replaced by the Jefferson Pier in 1804, while Jefferson was President of the United States. The Jefferson Pier Stone marks the second prime meridian of the United States, even though it was never officially recognized, either by presidential proclamation or by a resolution or act of Congress. The stone is on the National Mall almost due south of the center of the White House and the midline of 16th Street, NW, about due west of the center of the United States Capitol building, almost due north of the center of the Jefferson Memorial and 391 ft (119 m) WNW of the center of the Washington Monument. For more, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_meridian and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Pier and "Washington in Maps," by Iris Miller From a video I took of Ken Rasmussen's field trip entitled: Building Stones of the National Mall: Geological Field Studies Trip to Washington, DC on Saturday, 31 May 2014.

Tacoma (/təˈkoʊmə/ tə-KOH-mə) is a mid-sized urban port city in and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States. The city is on Washington's Puget Sound, 32 miles (51 km) southwest of Seattle, 31 miles (50 km) northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. The population was 198,397, according to the 2010 census. Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third largest in the state. Tacoma also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region, which has a population of around 1 million people. Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Takhoma or Tahoma. It is locally known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad, Tacoma's motto became "When rails meet sails". Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast and Washington State's largest port. Like most central cities, Tacoma suffered a prolonged decline in the mid-20th century as a result of suburbanization and divestment. Since the 1990s, developments in the downtown core include the University of Washington Tacoma; Tacoma Link, the first modern electric light rail service in the state; the state's highest density of art and history museums; and a restored urban waterfront, the Thea Foss Waterway. Neighborhoods such as the 6th Avenue District have become revitalized. Tacoma has been named one of the most livable areas in the United States. In 2006, Tacoma was listed as one of the "most walkable" cities in the country. That same year, the women's magazine Self named Tacoma the "Most Sexually Healthy City" in the United States. In contrast, Tacoma was also ranked as the "most stressed-out" city in the country in a 2004 survey. Tacoma gained notoriety in 1940 for the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which earned the nickname "Galloping Gertie". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tacoma,_Washington Image By http://im.haberturk.com/2016/09/17/1297688_efb8b9411466244266e681ffac5cc0ce_640x640.jpg [CC BY-SA 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0)], via Wikimedia Commons

Note from Ryan Lewis: It seems like when a music video comes out, the title that receives all of the credit and travels with a film is that of the director. It's as though the director is the "artist" or "creator" of the music video, when in reality a music video is first a written treatment, produced (putting together ingredients like actors and locations), shot and directed, cut on the editing board and finally color graded. The music might be fine tuned and scored specifically for that film. There are so many variables that are completely equal if not sometimes more complicated than directing, it's a shame that so much credit comes down to whoever fulfills that position. A director wouldn't have shit to direct without a producer. A producer would have nothing to produce without a writer, and so forth. For our team, I think it's even more complicated because roles tend to cross over. We simply don't work within the conventional hierarchy of the film industry (director, producer, etc.) Sure, people have concrete pre-defined roles based on their expertise, but our team has the remarkable ability to wear multiple hats. Can't Hold Us was a video that showcased this well. After three months of shooting, finally getting to those last few frames where you reveal the credits, it's a tense moment. There isn't exactly a sensible way to do it, if we're trying to fit people into classic film roles. It leads me to the point that although we do our best to give people titles, this was a video fully created by seven individuals at the forefront. Take any of those people out of the equation, you'd be watching a very different video. I write this in hopes that you don't fall under the illusion that one person creates a music video, particularly at the Macklemore camp. We are constantly challenging and enhancing each others ideas and I take pride in believing that's the reason we make great videos. - Ryan Lewis Music Video: Written By Ben Haggerty Ryan Lewis Tricia Davis Directed By Ryan Lewis Jason Koenig Jon Jon Augustavo Produced By Tricia Davis Honna Kimmerer Jenny Koenig Starring Ben Haggerty Ryan Lewis Ray Dalton Owuor Arunga Da Kadu Brown Director of Photography Jason Koenig Ryan Lewis Mego Lin Stedicam Operators Chris Duerkopp Rhys Duncan Ant Ireland Alex Kornreich Production Assistants Linda SImonsen Jackie Ganger Edward Tran Adam Leeman Nic Adenau Johnny Valencia Ben Campofreda Seth McDonald Mitchell Overton Lei Tao Editing & Color Grading Ryan Lewis Jason Koenig Post Production Supervisor Erik Hustad Special Thanks RED Panavision Victory Studios Koerner Camera Space Needle Ryan Sanson Lady Washington Logan Neitzel Sierra Blu Kennels USC FIJI House Niche Camera Karen Stimwell & Co. President Barack Obama will depart the cozy confines of Washington to meet with Texas Gov. Rick Perry today. They're discussing the surge of young Central Americans crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. This crisis has put the two leaders at odds with each other. In a statement yesterday, Perry's office seemed to welcome the meeting with Obama, which will take place in Dallas. Some estimates say that more than 52,000 unaccompanied minors from Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras have been caught trying to sneak over the U.S.-Mexico border since October. That's double the number from the same period one year before. The Reuters news service noted: "Many are fleeing extreme poverty, gangs and drug violence, as well as responding to rumors spread by smugglers that children who reach the U.S. border will be allowed to stay." Perry has stated that National Guard troops should be sent to the border to help stem the surge of Central American nationals entering the United States illegally. And as we reported yesterday, Central America's extreme poverty is partly the result of the Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, that has allowed multinational corporations, primed with government favors, to colonize and cannibalize the Central American economy. That creates economic refugees who feel they have little choice except to head north. Gov. Perry on Sunday sharply criticized the Obama administration for not moving more quickly to confront this exodus out of Central America. Speaking of those in the federal government, Perry told ABC News: "They either are inept or don't care." Perry even declined an offer from Washington to greet Obama when the President first arrives in Texas today, at the capital city of Austin. Perry apparently wants concrete action and would prefer that Obama personally visit the areas where the child-migration problem is actually happening. In Perry's mind, a grip-and-grin photo-op with Obama at the Austin airport won't cut it. In a statement, Perry wrote: "A quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas." Speaking of Perry, Reuters added, "He said he'd prefer a 'substantive meeting' to discuss the issue and would alter his schedule to accommodate the request." President Obama asked Congress on Tuesday for $3.7 billion in funding to attempt to deal with the border crisis. But while Obama is apparently in Texas because of the border problem, he's also traveling in the Lone Star State this week to raise money for Democratic candidates running in November's congressional elections. Moreover, the White House said the President would not even visit the border. One might add that while Americans expect politics-as-usual much of the time, this border crisis calls for state and national leaders to set aside their election mindset and address the problem head-on. After all, what's the point of getting elected for public service if public service itself is the first casualty in this crisis? At the very least, the Lone Star State is showing the kind of backbone which, for a short time in the mid-1800s, resulted in the territory becoming its own nation. Yet today, this refreshing leadership from Texas on a national problem could be seen as proof-positive that Washington's massive central government is often too removed from reality to do the job.
