Topics Covered Public Switched Telephone Network Central Offices Trunk Lines PBX and Voicemail Systems PBX Stations Voicemail Subcribers Class Notes Introduction Telephone systems are not complicated if you understand how they work. A Word on VoIP VoIP is not a telephone system PSTN PSTN -- Public Switched Telephone Network is like the Internet, but for telephone communication NADP -- North American Dialing Plan -- Is the system for routing telephone calls. Central Office -- All telephone lines connect to a local central office Trunk Lines Every Trunk Line has a telephone number A Trunk Line allows for 1 incoming or outgoing call. You can have far more telephones in a building then you have trunk lines. Incoming Trunk lines are setup in Hunt Groups. If the main phone number is busy the call is automatically forwarded to the next number in the Hunt Group Incoming Hunt Groups are setup by your local telephone company. Outgoing calls can be routed to use selected trunk lines. This in configured in your PBX. PBX and Voicemail The PBX routes telephone calls The Voicemail system provides all audio messaging. (Voicemail boxes, Message Boards, and Auto Attendant Messages) Stations All devices that connect to the PBX are "Stations". This includes telephones, call boxes, intercom systems, etc. There are 2 types of stations; Analogue and Digital. Analogue and Digital stations have to be connected to appropriate ports on the PBX. An analogue phone cannot connect to a digital port and vice versa. Almost all fax machines and phones you buy at retail stores are analogue. If your new fax machine does not work it may be because it's plugged into a digital line. Subscribers Subscribers are users of the Voicemail system. Subscribers do not have to have stations Voicemail ports are the number of connections to the Voicemail system at any one time. This includes not just people retrieving their voicemail, but also incoming calls that connect to Auto Attendant messages. Final Thoughts Be careful before you touch! Most older telephone and voicemail systems were administered using a phone keypad, NOT and computer interface. If you mess something up it can be very difficult to rebuild a deleted Auto Attendant or such. Resources North American Numbering Plan PSTN -- Wikipedia

The South Korean company "Samsung Electronics" has developed a 60 GHz WiFi technology that can send data five times faster than other existing systems. This will allow data transmission speeds of up to 575 megabytes (MB) per second – It is enough to download a 1GB movie in less than three seconds. By using this new Wi-Fi technology, an uncompressed high-definition (HD) videos can be streamed from mobile devices to a television in real-time. The group says previous attempts to use the 60GHz band for WiFi have failed because they used millimetre waves that travel by line-of-sight. They have weak penetration properties, which means they often lose signal and data performance when they hit obstacles such as walls. Using something known as a 'wide-coverage beam-forming antennae', Samsung says it has solved the speed issues that come with millimetre waves. The Samsung group plans to commercialise this 60 GHz WiFi technology as early as next year, in audio-visual systems, medical devices and mobile phones. And, this technology will also be integral to developments relevant to the Samsung Smart Home and other initiatives related to the Internet of Things. Hello Friends . Today I show you how to set your wifi speed limit for others those are connected to your modem device for internet. so follow these simple steps as show on this video. 1.)Sort 18.104.22.168 or tplinklogin.net in your web program, enter the username and watchword (both of which are administrator as a matter of course), and press Enter. You will be demonstrated the web interface for your TP-Link switch. 2.)Open the area IP and Mac Binding → ARP List and note down the IP address of the individual or gadget for which you need to restrict the data transfer capacity. For my situation, this IP address is 22.214.171.124. 3.)Open the section Bandwidth Control → Control Settings. Select the checkbox Enable bandwidth control and click on the Save button. 4.)Open the segment Bandwidth Control → Rules List and tap on Add New catch. Enter the IP address (you don't need to enter an IP run) and the entrance (transfer) and departure (download) speeds in the frame and tap on the Save catch. 5.)It would begin restricting the data transfer capacity instantly. Presently you can check the objective gadget and run a web speed test on it to see if the WiFi data transmission is being constrained or not. Conclusion: TP-Link WiFi switches permit simple web data transfer capacity control for every one of the gadgets associated through it. You can confine the transfer speed of gadgets or clients that are downloading such a great amount of information from your WiFi get to point that it is devastating the web for your own particular utilize. bottom lines: -Twitter https://twitter.com/Biggtrixs -Youtube https://youtube.com/Biggtrixs -Facebook https://facebook.com/biggtrixs If You like videos then suscribe my channel for more videos.. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX-0... welcome to Android hero24 Evolved High Speed Packet Access , or , or HSPA(Plus) , or HSPAP is a technical standard for wireless , broadband telecommunication. It is the second phase of HSPA which has been introduced in 3GPP release 7 and being further improved in later 3GPP releases. HSPA+ can achieve data rates of up to 42.2 Mbit/s. It introduces antenna array technologies such as beamforming and Multiple-input multiple-output communications (MIMO). Beam forming focuses the transmitted power of an antenna in a beam towards the user’s direction. MIMO uses multiple antennas at the sending and receiving side. Further releases of the standard have introduced dual carrier operation, i.e. the simultaneous use of two 5 MHz carriers. The technology also delivers significant battery life improvements and dramatically quicker wake-from-idle time, delivering a true always-on connection. HSPA+ is an evolution of HSPA that upgrades the existing 3G network and provides a method for telecom operators to migrate towards 4G speeds that are more comparable to the initially available speeds of newer LTE networks without deploying a new radio interface. HSPA+ should not be confused with LTE though, which uses an air interface based on Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access modulation and multiple access. Advanced HSPA+ is a further evolution of HSPA+ and provides data rates up to 84.4 and 168 Megabits per second (Mbit/s) to the mobile device (downlink) and 22 Mbit/s from the mobile device (uplink) under ideal signal conditions. Technically these are achieved through the use of a multiple-antenna technique known as MIMO (for "multiple-input and multiple-output") and higher order modulation (64QAM) or combining multiple cells into one with a technique known as Dual-Cell HSDPA. Downlink Evolved HSDPA (HSPA+) An Evolved HSDPA network can theoretically support up to 28 Mbit/s and 42 Mbit/s with a single 5 MHz carrier for Rel7 (MIMO with 16QAM) and Rel8 ( 64-QAM + MIMO), in good channel conditions with low correlation between transmit antennas. Although real speeds are far lower. Besides the throughput gain from doubling the number of cells to be used, some diversity and joint scheduling gains can also be achieved. The QoS (Quality of Service) can be particularly improved for end users in poor radio reception where they cannot benefit from the other WCDMA capacity improvements (MIMO and higher order modulations) due to poor radio signal quality. In 3GPP a study item was completed in June 2008. The outcome can be found in technical report 25.825. An alternative method to double the data rates is to double the bandwidth to 10 MHz (i.e. 2×5 MHz) by using DC-HSDPA. Dual-Carrier HSDPA (DC-HSDPA) Dual-Carrier HSDPA , also known as Dual-Cell HSDPA, is part of 3GPP Release 8 specification. It is the natural evolution of HSPA by means of carrier aggregation in the downlink. UMTS licenses are often issued as 5, 10, or 20 MHz paired spectrum allocations. The basic idea of the multicarrier feature is to achieve better resource utilization and spectrum efficiency by means of joint resource allocation and load balancing across the downlink carriers. New HSDPA User Equipment categories 21-24 have been introduced that support DC-HSDPA. DC-HSDPA can support up to 42.2 Mbit/s, but unlike HSPA, it does not need to rely on MIMO transmission. The support of MIMO in combination with DC-HSDPA will allow operators deploying Release 7 MIMO to benefit from the DC-HSDPA functionality as defined in Release 8. While in Release 8 DC-HSDPA can only operate on adjacent carriers, Release 9 also allows that the paired cells can operate on two different frequency bands. Later releases allow the use of up to four carriers simultaneously. From Release 9 onwards it will be possible to use DC-HSDPA in combination with MIMO being used on both carriers. The support of MIMO in combination with DC-HSDPA will allow operators even more capacity improvements within their network. This will allow theoretical speed of up to 84.4 Mbit/s. User Equipment (UE) Categories The following table is derived from table 5.1a of the release 11 of 3GPP TS 25.306 and shows maximum data rates of different device classes and by what combination of features they are achieved. The per-cell per-stream data rate is limited by the Maximum number of bits of an HS-DSCH transport block received within an HS-DSCH TTI and the Minimum inter-TTI interval . The TTI is 2 ms. So for example Cat 10 can decode 27952 bits/2 ms = 13.976 MBit/s (and not 14.4 MBit/s as often claimed incorrectly). Categories 1-4 and 11 have inter-TTI intervals of 2 or 3, which reduces the maximum data rate by that factor. Dual-Cell and MIMO 2x2 each multiply the maximum data rate by 2, because multiple independent transport blocks are transmitted over different carriers or spatial streams, respectively. The data rates given in the table are rounded to one decimal point.

Verizon Communications and AT&T announced on Monday that they expect to be able to transmit wireless voice calls between the two carriers over high-speed data networks by 2015. The technology is expected to improve the quality of calls and allow for video calling and voicemail. AT&T and T-Mobile began rolling out Voice over LTE in select cities earlier this year. Verizon announced a nationwide launch in September, but customers cannot yet call subscribers on other networks using the technology. The technology could also allow customers to purchase devices that are not bound to a particular carrier and can easily be transferred to a different network. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/reuters/technologyNews/~3/jqIvhWKKcJI/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

On Prime Time, a discussion on net neutrality and whether the telecom companies are justified in their claim that they are losing out on text and mms because of apps that allow transmission of data for free. Telecom operators have been appealing to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to allow them block certain apps and websites if they do not pay charges to the internet service provider. However, citizens on social media have launched a campaign to ensure there is net neutrality and no bias against any website. This video will show you how to modify a micro USB cord to enable high speed charging by USB on Samsung Phones. Please watch Part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSIg9-DmguE Will the cable mod work for my device? You must first establish if it will charge any faster. Charging rate is regulated by the controller on the battery, (their is ridiculous amount of wrong information in these posts, funny to read). 1. Find a method of determining the rate of charge, Android App or Charging hub with display. 2a. Test with the factory charger 2b. Test with a non factory charge with the same max Amp capacity. 3. If there is a difference in charging rate, then the cable mod should provide you with a way to get full speed with the non factory charger. Note: Know your equipment specs, example usb port on PC 0.5A, most phone chargers 1.0A, Tablet charger 2.0A Update, this has no effect on the Galaxy Note 3. You can get full speed on any micro usb if the power supply can handle the 1.2 amps. I have no affiliation with this app, but here is the link. Yes, the app was off a decimal, this is not my app. For the non believers and app haters, please see this video @18:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BWzt5fXCZI&list=PL22oCJnAts91M5KKOo2QFqSSV6O1B621W Current Widget https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manor.currentwidget&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tYW5vci5jdXJyZW50d2lkZ2V0Il0 Or for most Galaxy Phone https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free&hl=en

5G 주파수 경매 시작... 5G 시대 성큼 The auction for 5th Generation network frequencies is underway in South Korea this Friday morning. It is part of South Korea's efforts to become the first country to commercialize 5G. Our Kan Hyeong-woo looks into the benefits that the 5G wireless system will bring. After the first intercontinental 5G trial at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in February, South Korea has taken another big step towards commercializing the next generation telecommunication technology by holding a 5G spectrum auction on June 15th with the nation's three mobile carriers - SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus taking part. South Korea showcased the benefits of 5G technology at the World IT Show 2018 back in May. The technology will allow greater connectivity between devices, a more reliable connection and the ability to send far more data than before. 5G has a maximum download speed of 20 Gigabits per second... which is about 40 times faster than the current LTE services. Downloading a 15-Gigabyte high definition video takes 4 minutes on the current network. 5G can shorten the download time to 6 seconds. 5G is a key technology for the fourth industrial revolution. It is vital for the expansion of virtual and augmented reality technology and will also lead to increased growth of The Internet of Things or "smart" devices as it can provide a secure reliable connection and prevent delays in data transmission. This will likely solve the problem of autonomous vehicles having unstable connections. The three mobile carriers taking part in the 5G spectrum auction aim to commercialize 5G services by March 2019... which would make South Korea the first country to do so. Our notification to the parent companies is described below in detail. We found that both versions of the application leak a significant amount of personal and personally-identifiable data; as a result, any network operator or in-path actor on the network can acquire a user’s personally identifiable information (including cellular subscriber information, mobile device identifiers, geolocation data, and search queries) through trivial decrypting of traffic or by observing unencrypted traffic. Specifically, the issues we found include User data, including IMSI, IMEI, Android ID, and Wi-Fi MAC address are sent without encryption to Umeng, an Alibaba analytics tool, in the Chinese language version. User geolocation data, including longitude/latitude and street name, are transmitted without encryption by AMAP, an Alibaba mapping tool, in the Chinese language version. User search queries are sent without encryption to the search engine Shenma (in the Chinese language version) or Yahoo! India and Google (in the English language version). Reason for concern: The transmission of personally identifiable information, geolocation data and search queries without encryption represents a privacy risk for users because it allows anyone with access to the data traffic to identify users and their devices, and collect their private search data. Transmission of personally identifiable information and geolocation data with easily circumvented encryption: Location and user data, including IMSI, IMEI, and data about nearby cellular towers and Wi-Fi access points, are sent with easily circumvented encryption by AMAP, an Alibaba mapping tool, in the Chinese language version. Reason for Concern: UC Browser’s transmission of personally identifiable subscriber data, mobile device identifiers, and user geolocation data without effective encryption presents a security and privacy risk for users. Private user data is retained on the device even after clearing the application’s cache: In the Chinese language version, when users attempt to delete their private data by clearing the application’s cache their DNS lookups are not deleted. Reason for concern: The cached record of DNS lookup data would allow for a third party with access to the device to identify the websites that a user visited. Title: Extracting Spread-Spectrum Hidden Data from Digital Media Domain: Networking - Steganography Key Features: 1. We consider the problem of extracting blindly data embedded over a wide band in a spectrum (transform) domain of a digital medium (image, audio, video). We develop a novel multicarrier/ signature iterative generalized least-squares (M-IGLS) core procedure to seek unknown data hidden in hosts via multicarrier spread-spectrum embedding. 2. Neither the original host nor the embedding carriers are assumed available. Experimental studies on images show that the developed algorithm can achieve recovery probability of error close to what may be attained with known embedding carriers and host autocorrelation matrix. 3. We propose the information hiding concept to reduce the risk of using cryptographic algorithms alone. Data hiding techniques embed information into another medium making it imperceptible to others, except for those that are meant to receive the hidden information and are aware of it presence. 4. It focuses on methods of hidden data in which cryptographic algorithms are combined with the information hiding techniques to increase the security of transmitted data. We focus our attention on the blind recovery of secret data hidden in medium hosts via multi-carrier/signature direct-sequence spread-spectrum transform domain embedding. MODULE DESCRIPTION Steganography: Steganography includes the concealment of information within computer files. In digital steganography, electronic communications may include steganographic coding inside of a transport layer, such as a document file, image file, program or protocol Digital steganography can hide confidential data (i.e. secret files) very securely by embedding them into some media data called "vessel data." The vessel data is also referred to as "carrier, cover, or dummy data". In Steganography images used for vessel data. The embedding operation in practice is to replace the "complex areas" on the bit planes of the vessel image with the confidential data. The most important aspect of Steganography is that the embedding capacity is very large. For a 'normal' image, roughly 50% of the data might be replaceable with secret data before image degradation becomes apparent. Multi-Carrier Spread Spectrum Embedding: The technique of spread spectrum may allow partly to fulfill the above requirements. Advantages of spread spectrum techniques are widely known: Immunity against multi-path distortion, no need for fiequency planning, high flexibility and variable data rate transmission. The capability of minimising multiple access interference in direct-sequence code- division-multiple-access system is given by the cross-correlation properties of spreading codes. In the case of multi-path propagation the capability of distinguishing one component fiom thers in the composite received signal is offered by the auto-correlation roperties of the spreading codes. Image encryption and watermarking: The host image is an 8-bit or higher grey level image which must ideally be the same size as the plaintext image or else resized accordingly using the same proportions. Pre-conditioning the cipher and the convolution processes are undertaken using a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT). The output will include negative floating point numbers upon taking the real component of a complex array. The array must be rectified by adding the largest negative value in the output array to the same array before normalization. For color host images, the binary cipher text can be inserted into one or all of the RGB components. The binary plaintext image should have homogeneous margins to minimize the effects of ringing due to 'edge effects' when processing the data using Fourier transform. Image decryption and extraction: (i) The correlation operation should be undertaken using a DFT. (ii) For color images, the data is decomposed into each RGB component and each 1-bit layer is extracted and correlated with the appropriate cipher. (iii) The output obtained in Step 3 has a low dynamic range and therefore requires to be quantized into an 8-bit image based on floating point numbers within the range max (array)-min (array). BlueDriver $99.95US Link to site: http://www.lemurmonitors.com The BlueDriver from Lemur is a scan tool app that uses a blue tooth interface to communicate with your OBDII vehicle. It has many on board features that allow you to read codes, file repair reports, do a quick smog check, or view live data. You can also read ABS codes for most domestic makes. Not long ago I did a review on the Actron from OTC, I think this tool is comparable to that tool. They both have similar features with the exception that the BlueDriver does not require additional software to be purchased a la carte. This ability gives this tool something of an edge when it comes to price however it does not do everything the Actron does. Before you say 'Torque app', I'm aware of it, I just haven't reviewed it. The LiFi is a wireless communications technology based on visible light. It uses LED lights that have the ability to turn on and off at the speed of light to transmit data to all types of devices. History OLEDCOMM two researchers from the University of Versailles have been working on a data communications system by light. Their work led to the founding of OLEDCOMM in 2012. Customers: OLECOMM had the opportunity to work with many actors such as museums, industrial, commercial or transport. #Receiving information It can transmit information with light. Unlike WiFi, Lifi transmits wireless information x10 faster than WiFi, with unlimited bandwidth, have the InDoor geolocation, have a more secure connection and those without electromagnetic pollution. To do this, place the device on an LED lamp and you will directly receive information, geolocation and multimedia content. #Cloud OLEDCOMM also provides a client interface to administer the Lifi service through a cloud. This application will allow for real-time data transfers between lamps and consumers to have a data history for each consumer (journey time spent at each location etc.), or the history of the activity lamps.

Subscribe: Pangilinan’s big announcement: Free, but finite mobile Internet Read more: http://jessapp.blogspot.com/p/blog-page_26.html Follow me: https://twitter.com/lil_jei Follow me:https://www.facebook.com/jestoni.esperanza MANILA, Philippines–Philippine Long Distance Corp. (PLDT), the country’s biggest telecommunications company, is offering FREE MOBILE internet to its 66 million prepaid subscribers for the next two months, as officials noted that long-term benefits would offset a temporary hit in terms of forgone revenues. PLDT chair Manuel V. Pangilinan announced on Friday that prepaid subscribers of Smart, Talk ’N Text, and Sun Cellular be provided free internet starting Friday until Nov. 30. The press conference was held days after Pangilinan alluded to a “very important” announcement on his Twitter account. Prepaid subscribers account for about 90 percent of all mobile subscribers and Pangilinan said the move was aimed at unlocking the value of these subscribers. Officials added that their network was “ready” to handle the expected increase in internet usage. “The objective is to stimulate the internet habit,” Charles Lim, who heads Smart Communications’ consumer wireless business, said during the press conference. Subscribers can access the internet either through data-capable feature phones or smartphones running on Android, iOS and Windows operating systems. The promo comes with certain limitations, including a daily limit of 30 megabytes per day, after which a subscriber will be asked if he wants to purchase additional prepaid credits. Prepaid subscribers using the free promo will also be charged the regular rate for downloading videos, using FILE SHARING and messaging applications. “We are launching this initiative to provide a much larger number of Filipinos the opportunity to try out and experience the Internet, enjoy its benefits and, as we at Smart like to say, live more,” Pangilinan said in a separate statement today. “This special offer is specifically designed to assist our prepaid subscribers who make up the bulk of our population. Many of them already have the mobile devices capable of accessing the internet but have yet to use them to go online. In this way, Smart can effectively promote digital inclusion and spread the benefits of the Internet in the fastest and most effective way possible,” he added. PLDT said the promo means prepaid subscribers can use their data-enabled cellphones to browse through and post on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, visit their favorites websites, search on Google and Wikipedia, use navigation tools like Waze and Google Maps, book a cab or LIMO SERVICE via Easy Taxi and Uber, or use traffic info sites. They can also send and receive emails, read their favorite blogs or update their own blogs, listen to songs via Smart’s Spinnr music service, shop via online stores like Zalora, LAZADA, book their travel details through sites like Skyscanner and Expedia, among others. Check out my new book, How to Prepare for Everything: www.howtoprepare.com! The internet is not a fuzzy cloud. The internet is a wire, actually buried in the ground. Computers connected directly to the internet are called "Servers," while the computers you and I use are "clients," because they are not connected directly to the internet, but through an Internet Service Provider. Routers shuttle packets of information across the internet, and transmit e-mail, pictures, and web pages.

This talk will discuss two technology trends that will become paramount in the future of mobile communication systems: Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). Together they arguably represent the biggest advancement in the mobile communication network architecture in the last 20 years, and are fundamentally changing how network services are provided. It is the key enabler that will allow the network to be more nimble, flexible and scalable. It gives a unique opportunity to re-architect the mobile network to efficiently offer the services in the future. The industry has already moved strongly in this direction; the reation of OPNFV in September of 2014 is a significant step from the industry in terms of commercialization of these technologies, they will increase the rate of innovation, equip the industry for novel business models, and speed up the development of the ecosystem that will enrich our lives.

5G 주파수 경매 시작... 5G 시대 성큼 The auction for 5th Generation network frequencies is underway in South Korea, pitting the biggest names against each other. All part of efforts to become the first country to commercialize 5G. Our Kan Hyeong-woo sheds light on the significance, and the benefits of this wireless system. South Korea's three mobile carriers - SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus - are bidding for 5G network frequencies in the 5G spectrum auction that started on Friday. Having set a goal to commercialize fifth generation telecommunication services by March 2019, Seoul aims to become the first country to provide a 5G network for the public. The 5G technology will allow faster transmission between devices, a more reliable connection and the ability to send far more data than before. 5G has a maximum download speed of 20 Gigabits per second... which is about 40 times faster than the current LTE services. Downloading a 15-Gigabyte high definition video takes 4 minutes on the current network. 5G, on the other hand, can shorten the download time to 6 seconds. The next generation telecommunication network is also a key technology for the fourth industrial revolution. As a 5G network can provide a reliable connection and prevent delays in data transmission, It is vital for the expansion of virtual and augmented reality technology and will also lead to increased growth of The Internet of Things or "smart" devices. CHECK OUT APPMATCH HERE, THANKS! - http://bit.ly/appmatchapp OK, so a new version of iOS is officially out and so now you're done with messing around with the beta and just want to get back on the stable OS track. You'd like that maybe the beta software would just update to the latest stable version of iOS (and then maybe move to the next beta when that's available?), but no, it doesn't work that way. You need to actually remove the beta profile and then force the device to find the stable update and replace the software, for whatever reason. In case you aren't sure how to do that, however, here's a quick guide on remove iOS betas from your iPhone and get back to the normal stock iOS. Fiber optic cable in essence, is a hair-like glass conduit that carries virtually any type of signal from one point to another at light speed. In case you are wondering why light traveling through fiber optic cable does not actually travel at true light speed, it is because the glass that makes up fiber optic cable is denser than the vacuum of outer space where light can travel without disruption. Needless to say, a fiber optic light signal is still much faster and far superior to a copper based signal, which is why it has become so popular in the cable television, telecommunications and computer networking. Unlike copper based signals, fiber signals are not affected by external power sources or surges and there is no need for shielding or grounding. How are Fiber Optics used today? Today, practically every communication network contains fiber optics. In most cases, fiber optics are used because of their convenience. Fiber optic cable allows network builders to divide their network into smaller service areas that prevent large numbers of customers from being affected in an outage. The result is better service and customer relations. Fiber optic cable also gives them a fast return path, which they use for Internet and telephone connections, thereby increasing their revenue potential. The use of fiber optics is not just limited to communication networks. Cable and telephone providers often use fiber for its distance capabilities. Distance is also an advantage to industrial plants that use vast amounts of fiber primarily for its noise immunity. Utilities also prefer fiber for noise immunity, security and high bandwidth properties. The military uses fiber because it's nearly tap-proof and impossible to jam. Fiber is even used by the aviation and aerospace industries because of its smaller size and weight. What are the advantages of Fiber Optics over Copper wire? Fiber's extra distance capability and seemingly unlimited data rate makes it possible to do things not possible with copper wire. For example, you can install all the electronics for a network in one communications closet for a building and run straight to the desk with fiber. With copper, you can only transmit about 90 meters (less than 300 feet), thus requiring more telecom closets in each building. With fiber, you only need passive patch panels locally to allow for moves. Upgrades can be rather difficult with copper wire, but not with fiber because the real capacity of fiber is only partially utilized at today's network speed. Many use fiber to connect all their central offices and long distance switches because it has thousands of times the bandwidth of copper wire and can carry signals hundreds of times further before needing a repeater. The cable and telephone providers use fiber because it gives them greater reliability with the opportunity to offer new services, like digital phone service and Internet connections. They also use fiber for economic reasons, but their cost justification requires adopting new network architectures to take advantage of the fiber's strengths.
