Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/KpbUAP “Our Senses” contains 11 interactive, funhouse-like galleries that each explore a different way in which our brain influences our perceptions. It was curated by Rob DeSalle, who previously oversaw the fascinating “Brain: The Inside Story.” Read the full article here: https://www.timeout.com/newyork/blog/a-trippy-new-exhibition-opens-at-the-american-museum-of-natural-history-today-112017 In the “seeing” gallery, you’ll encounter a wall with a mural that changes based on the color of light directed at it like a super G-rated episode of Room Raiders. A “balancing” gallery uses bending lines swerving across a black-and-white room to give the impression that the walls are moving, and that you’re starring in a ‘90s sci-fi thriller. The room focused on “smelling” is full of boxes containing mystery scents that you’re encouraged to sniff out. (Yes, there’s a skunk box. There’s always a skunk box.) In addition to the hand-on exploration of human’s senses and how our brains makes… uh… sense of them, the exhibition explores how we’re beginning to extend our senses with the help of technology because no one seems to be that worried that we keep making the robots smarter. The blue whale as described from the site: The Blue Whale At 94 feet long, the 21,000-pound fiberglass model of a female blue whale is a Museum treasure. Blue whales have been hunted to near extinction. Today, the Museum's blue whale serves as a reminder of our responsibility to our environment, both on land and in the sea. This is a model of a blue whale found in 1925 off the southern tip of South America. The largest animal alive today, this mammal species is fast, traveling up to 30 miles an hour. Blue whales are also loud, their deep sounds heard 620 miles away. They maintain their weight (sometimes more than 100 tons) on a diet of small crustaceans called krill. From centuries-old specimens to entirely new types of specialized collections like frozen tissues and genomic data, the Museum's scientific collections (with more than 33,000,000 specimens and artifacts) form an irreplaceable record of life on Earth, the span of geologic time, and knowledge about our vast universe. Shelf Life is a collection for curious minds—opening doors, pulling out drawers, and taking the lids off some of the incredible, rarely-seen items in the American Museum of Natural History. Over the next year, Shelf Life will explore topics like specimen preparation, learn why variety is vital, and meet some of the people who work in the Museum collections.
