The American West 03 - Wagon Trails to the West (1849) - from Timelines.tv
A 14-year-old girl describes a great American adventure, crossing the Plains by wagon on a 2000-mile journey west. (9.25 mins) In 1848, the Hester family from Indiana embarked on an epic journey west by covered wagon to California. Their 14-year-old daughter Sallie wrote a diary describing the experience, and this module tells her story. It follows the Hesters across the Plains and over the treacherous Sierra Nevadas - past the place where the Donner Party met their grisly end just three years earlier. Written and directed by Andrew Chater. Originally commissioned and broadcast by the BBC. Copyright Andrew Chater / Lodestar Productions / Timelines.tv, streamed with the BBC's consent. How Did They Survive the Oregon Trail? | Learn Liberty
How did more than 300,000 people avoid bloodshed and chaos when they crossed the American plains between 1840 and 1860? Trappers used to say there was no law west of Leavenworth, Kansas. Learn more: http://bit.ly/1HVAtKP No one established a government to rule the wagon trains — it's true. But they governed themselves instead. They signed contracts that worked like voluntary constitutions. The contracts anticipated disputes among the various groups of travelers and laid out how to resolve them. Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24
In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers. Support CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. America’s Westward expansion was fueled by both Manifest Destiny and a desire to grow the nation and its resources — though at a cost: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/manifest-destiny As Americans continued to stream West on the name of Manifest Destiny, American Indians saw their lives changed forever as they moved from practising resistance to lives on reservations: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/from-resistance-to-reservations

Stories of America Episode #18 (1976) The Oregon Trail
The purpose of this YouTube channel is to preserve and show educational programs that are no longer being shown on television due to their age. There is no intention to feature these videos for any monetary gain. The interconnectedness of all things is a fundamental part of reading motivation projects. Although GPN's Reading Rainbow claims to have invented that idea, Stories of America with host Ann McGregor got there first. It was 1976, America's bicentennial year, and WVIZ-TV of Cleveland wanted something more out of a series aimed at delivering American history, They decided to combine history with reading. The result was Stories of America. Hosting was the familiar face of Ann McGregor, who had enlivened Picture Book Park and Tilson's Bookshop some two years earlier. Stories of America resembled more of a story reading than a history lesson, but it also introduced other elements that became standard Reading Rainbow procedure. There were occasional film sequences, dramatizations, and even an animation. All told, the 32-part Stories of America series ran some 14 years on WVIZ-TV. The station brought the shows back in 1998, and it would be the only WVIZ instructional television production ever to return to Cleveland airwaves. But in short order, Stories of America would be pulled from the air again, destined to be locked in the same fate with all other WVIZ instructional series. They are all, to borrow the Michael Palin phrase, "sitting behind desks." Credit: tv.com

TAT Trans American Trail Oregon
Clips of the TAT Trans America Trail in Oregon. Mon Aug 14 Day 10 Lakeview - Crescent There was a little snap in the air out of Lakeview, and by the time I hit the gravel I had to stop to change gloves and zip everything up on the jacket. The trail was very similar to yesterday's from Cedarville to Lakeview. For me it was just fun easy going forest road with views here and there. A little after 9 in the morning I get a text from Stu that there was a search on for a missing hunter in the area, and to keep an eye out for him. Sure enough, about 30 minutes later I blow by a guy hunched over sitting on a rock. I turned back, and yep this is the guy. I'll call him J, 68 years old, and had spent most of yesterday and all night without food, water, or fire, He was wearing only shorts and t-shirt. He was bruised and cut up from falling on the lava rock during the night. He was in rough shape. I gave him food and water, then grabbed my phone. It had one bar signal strength, but that did the trick to 911. I asked the 911 operator if Oregon was missing a hunter, and she said in fact they were. I told her I had him, we exchanged some pleasantries, and a little over a hour later the Department of Interior and State Patrol showed up to take him to an ambulance down the Mountain. Apparently J was 12 miles from where they were looking for him. I now understand why people hunt antelope from the road, it's too easy for those hunters to get lost if they leave it. Antelope permits are given out by lottery, and I thought this was to limit the harvest. No, it is to limit the number of lost antelope hunters in the woods at any given time. I don't remember much of the trip back down the mountain. After gas in Silver Lake there was another basin to cross. This was a flash back to Nevada. There was silt and some deep sand; however, the length of the deep stuff was not on par with Nevada. Across the basin nice Oregon forest road and dual track returns as you climb. 193 miles Tue Aug 15 Day 11 Crescent - Glendale The day started with 36 degrees and fog for the ride to the Dry Creek Store. The ride was the standard fun Oregon trails only with diminished views due to smoke from the fires. The best scenery was down lower riding along and crossing over the river. Once fueled at Dry Creek for the leg to Glendale the river views continued for a while; however, the smoke was also getting thicker. Somewhere 30 to 40 miles on the track to Glendale the route was closed by the Forest Service due to the fires. The guy at the closure routed me to road 28 to Tiller, then on to Canyonville. I asked if Stu had been by. He said yes, about 30 minutes ago and he sent him on the same route. All and all I figured I missed some 70 miles of trail. 197 miles Wed Aug 16 Day 12 Glendale - Port Orford The final push to Port Orford started a little after sunrise with temperatures in the 50s. For some reason I thought this last section would be a fairly fast 115 miles. Nope, it would not be. It started with the normal Oregon TAT terrain until we ran into our first new Oregon TAT obstacle, a locked gate on the road. It had an easy go around for bikes, and you could see where a couple quads and a truck had turned around on the other side of the gate. This, and the fact that there had been no traffic on our side, led me to believe that we were already on the wrong side of the gate. We took the little loop around the gate and started heading down the mountain. Down at the creek there was another locked gate, and it took some doing but we both ended up on the right side of the gate. Several miles after the last gate we started climbing again on great roads, and the smoke had cleared some in this part of the forest from what we had yesterday. On the start of what was to be our final TAT descent we encountered the rock slide. It was a tight squeeze. You can route around this slide or make a high line if you have pointy things sticking out of your bike. The rest of the trip is twisting gravel with some ruts until you hit the slab to Port Orford. Video has the last bit of gravel on it. 122 miles

Rinker Buck, "The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey"
This week's guest on REPORT FROM SANTA FE is Rinker Buck, author of the #1 New York Times best-selling book "The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey." “The Oregon Trail” is an epic account of Buck’s four-month adventure, traveling the length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way—in a covered wagon with a team of mules, an audacious journey that hasn’t been attempted in a century. It also chronicles the rich history of the trail, the people who made the migration, and its significance to the country. Rinker Buck, a prize-winning journalist, is no stranger to grand adventures. His first travel narrative, Flight of Passage, was hailed by The New Yorker as “a funny, cocky gem of a book,” and, with The Oregon Trail, he brings the most important route in American history back to glorious and vibrant life. “The Oregon Trail” has been well received, becoming a #1 New York Times Bestseller, #1 Indie Next Pick, Amazon and Apple Best of the Month. Quote: -“Part Laura Ingalls Wilder, part Jack Kerouac, “The Oregon Trail” is an idiosyncratic and irresistible addition to the canon of American road-trip literature.” -- George Howe Colt “This smart, endearing book is not just about a picaresque and probably ill-advised adventure; it’s a story about us—who we are and how we came to be that way. As he makes his two thousand-mile pilgrimage by cussed mule across the dusty continent, Rinker Buck finds his way deep into our nation’s DNA.” -- Hampton Sides, author, Blood and Thunder and Americana

The eastern part of the Oregon Trail spanned part of the future state of Kansas and nearly all of what are now the states of Nebraska and Wyoming. The western half of the trail spanned most of the future states of Idaho and Oregon. The beginnings of the Oregon Trail were laid by fur trappers and traders from about 1811 to 1840 and were only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared further and further west, eventually reaching all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. What came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as improved roads, "cutouts", ferries and bridges made the trip faster and safer almost every year. From various "jumping off points" in Missouri, Iowa or Nebraska Territory, the routes converged along the lower Platte River Valley near Fort Kearny, Nebraska Territory and led to rich farmlands west of the Rocky Mountains. From the early to mid 1830s and particularly through the epoch years 1846--1869 the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners, and businessmen and their families. The eastern half of the trail was also used by travelers on the California Trail (from 1843), Bozeman Trail (from 1863), and Mormon Trail (from 1847) which used some of the same eastern trails before turning off to their separate destinations. Use of the trail declined as the first transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, making the trip west substantially faster, cheaper, and safer. Today, modern highways such as Interstate 80 follow the same course westward and pass through towns originally established to service the Oregon Trail.
