Arts East New York Combats Veiled Gentrification Efforts w/ Art & Community Action | BK Stories

04:28
Gentrification has become audacious in it's claims. Catherine Green, Founder & Executive Director of Arts East New York happened upon an article that referenced an ad that called East New York the "new frontier-" eerily akin to the prospecting ads of the early days of the United States, inviting "brave urban pioneers" to claim their lot. In response, Catherine invited local artists to submit work that challenged the notion that East New York is barren, uncharted territory. Together with her co-curator, Madi Dangerously, she is exhibiting the submissions in “East New York: Not the New Frontier” at her gallery, Arts East New York. http://artseastny.org/ @ARTsEastNewYork @MadiDangerously https://www.facebook.com/ARTsEastNY11207/ -- This video is from BRIC TV— the first 24/7 television channel created by, for, and about Brooklyn. Choreographed by: Ariel Grossman Performed by: Ariel Rivka Dance; Allie Kronick, Caitlyn Casson, Casie O'Kane, Danita Shaheen, Hana Ginsburg Tirosh, Kristin Licata and Kyleigh sackandy Composed by: David Homan, performed by cellists Elad Kabilio, Patrick McGuire, Peter Pearson and Sofia Nowik. Cueing instructions: Total piece is16.5 minutes. I am flexible as to what 10 minutes you prefer. My preference is to do the last three sections, which is a little over 12 minutes and starts at 4 minutes 7 seconds. Brief description: Meaning “my light” in Hebrew, Ori creates a raw, energetic performance by seven contemporary ballet dancers and four electrifying cellists. “…contemporary and fresh. The women recalled Ninjinska's Afternoon of a Faunas …they created architecture between them and with all the canons, it felt as if I was watching a zoetrope going around. Capturing the abstract, this husband as composer/wife as choreographer team left the crowd with dancers in black jutting quickly across the space and the music driving and forceful. They were equal forces of nature.” Jane Sato—Theater is Easy

Arts in the City - Tang Shipwreck in New York

08:14
A thousand year old Tang dynasty shipwreck exhibits in New York at Asia Society. Indonesian fishermen diving for sea cucumbers discovered a shipwreck off the Belitung Island. Its remarkable cargo originally included around 70 thousand ceramics produced in China, as well as luxurious objects of gold and silver. This shipwreck confirmed that, besides the land trading route “The Silk Road”— a maritime “Silk road” by sea also existed. It provides the proof of an active maritime trade in the ninth century between two powerful empires: The Tang Empire of China and the Abbasid empire in West Asia. Senior Curator Adriana Proser, and the tour guide Miryame Krogmeier gave the audience a brief introduction of the Tang ship and its remarkable cargo. (Taped 05/11/17) Arts in the City is a monthly look at the lively arts scene -- film, theatre, art, dance, music and events -- in the New York metropolitan area. This fast-moving half hour explores all aspects of the arts....from conception to completion. It looks at the most sophisticated of presentations to the most singular street musician toiling at his/her art. Art in all its forms is introduced and examined throughout the tri-state area. Blek Le Rat – Quin Arts, Escaping Paris, New York. Curated by DK Johnston

02:44
The Quin is privileged to feature Blek le Rat as an Artist in Residence. Blek le Rat is an artist who helped transform the visual culture of cities all over the world, to New York as our artist in residence this season. Widely recognized as the “Father of stencil graffiti,” Blek le Rat’s iconic work rapidly spread throughout Paris and Europe in the 1980s. Today, Blek le Rat is celebrated globally and is credited for having paved the way for street artists such as Banksy, Shepard Fairey, and Kaws. Curated by DK Johnston, the exhibit features 3 large scale original Blek le Rat paintings, as well as an edition of 25 unique monotypes with lithography that the artist created in collaboration with the New York Academy of Art during his tenure. The Quin’s permanent collection includes Blek le Rat’s “Love America” on the 14th floor and loaned works from DK Johnston of the “Great Wedding” on the second floor, “What Has Been Seen Cannot Be Unseen” in the Boardroom, and “Tango” in the Lobby. Most recently, the artist commemorated this collaboration on the Quin’s façade with a stencil image of Andy Warhol.
