Dr Allan Miller, Director Electric Power Engineering Centre Transport is a large contributor to New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions and most of these emissions are from light passenger vehicles. If we all drove electric vehicles, powered with renewable energy, we could reduce New Zealand’s greenhouse gas emissions significantly. However today most New Zealanders drive internal combustion engine cars and not all of our electricity generation is from renewable sources, which raises questions around whether we could convert our vehicle fleet to electric vehicles and whether this will actually reduce greenhouse gas emissions. On the other side of the argument, electric vehicles are readily available today. They’re becoming more affordable, and New Zealand has plenty of wind and geothermal renewable generation planned. This talk will look at the history of electric vehicles and their technology, and consider the impact on our electricity power system if we all drove electric vehicles. It will also touch on the environmental impacts for New Zealand and other countries from converting to electric vehicles, first-hand experience of owning an electric vehicle, and the need for skills and training in New Zealand to cope with the rise of new technologies in the electricity sector, which includes electric vehicles. Dr Miller is the Director of the Electric Power Engineering Centre (EPECentre), a research centre that aims to promote and support the excellence in education and research of electric power engineering. He is also the Director of the GREEN Grid research programme, which is looking at integrating renewables and other new technology into the grid, and aspects of the ‘smart grid’. As Director of both the EPECentre and GREEN Grid, Dr Miller has a particular interest in new technologies, such as electric vehicles and photovoltaic solar power, the impact they will have on the electrical power system, and the need for training engineers to manage the power system and the transition to these new technologies. Allan holds a PhD and BE (Hons) in electrical and electronic engineering, and is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (SMIEEE) and a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (MIPENZ).

In the last 15 years, one in three Detroit properties have been foreclosed on. When most people think of foreclosure, they think of people who can’t afford to pay off their mortgages. But in Detroit, it’s often the result of people struggling to pay their property taxes. One big reason is that, in the years after the Great Recession, the city went bankrupt and failed to lower property assessments far enough to account for the impact of the housing crisis. While the value of residents’ homes fell, their taxes remained inordinately high, and tens of thousands of people fell so far behind on their inflated tax bills that the county seized their homes and sold them off at annual auctions. In recent years, the city and county have lowered assessments and offered reduced interest rates to some homeowners. But they have no plans to stop punishing those who were overcharged in the past. VICE News followed this year’s tax foreclosure auction and investigated how the county financially benefits from the process. As Detroit touts its comeback and celebrates its success in climbing out of the largest municipal bankruptcy in American history, many of the city’s residents remain on the brink of displacement. First made in 1937 by General Motors and then repackaged for the WWII war effort, DIESEL THE MODERN POWER tells the story of the development and principles of the diesel engine. The film uses live action and animation to show how the diesel engine works, and live action footage of Sherman tanks, streamlined locomotives, switching engines, ships, and more. The film begins with an historical overview that includes a brief lesson on how to make fire, including two stones, rubbing pieces of wood, and even the "fire syringe" that was used by the people of Southeast Asia. The syringe is used to demonstrate the operation of a piston in an engine. At 14:30, 600 hp diesel engine are seen at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. At 14:46, the Burlington Pioneer Zephyr is seen running from Chicago to Denver. Mainline passenger locomotives are seen, providing up to 6000 hp. Diesel switch engines are seen at the 15:30 mark. At 18:40, lumber equipment, oil pumps, and earth moving equipment are seen -- all driven by diesel engines. The Detroit Diesel works is seen at the 19 minute mark. Diesel powered submarines, mine sweepers and coast patrol boats as well as fleet tugs, are also seen. A two-stroke diesel engine is a diesel engine that works in two strokes. A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that operates using the Diesel cycle. Invented in 1892 by German engineer Rudolf Diesel, it was based on the hot-bulb engine design and patented on February 23, 1893. During the period of 1900 to 1930, four-stroke diesel engines enjoyed a relative dominance in practical diesel applications. Charles F. Kettering and colleagues, working at the various incarnations of Electro-Motive and at the General Motors Research Corporation during the 1930s, advanced the art and science of two-stroke diesel technology to yield engines with much higher power-to-weight ratios than the two-stroke diesels of old. This work was instrumental in bringing about the dieselisation of railroads in the 1940s and 1950s. All diesel engines use compression ignition, a process by which fuel is injected after the air is compressed in the combustion chamber, thereby causing the fuel to self-ignite. By contrast, gasoline engines utilize the Otto cycle, or, more recently, the Atkinson cycle, in which fuel and air are mixed before entering the combustion chamber and then ignited by a spark plug. With close regulatory oversight, a home owner in Victoria, Australia gets a professional Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) to "abolish" a residential electricity supply. This is ATYPICAL because (i) the DistCo had already issued a Defect Notice, and themselves abolished the "active" wire upstream of the service fuse (brown porcelain rectangular object); (ii) the property was vacant, and (iii) the owner was not a current or recent customer of any electricity retailer. However, this action _may_ have wide applicability in opening up " abolishment" (i.e. permanent disconnection and safe isolation from electricity utility supply) to competition, in a formerly tightly controlled and expensive monopoly service. DistCo employees ("linesmen") normally control the service fuse, but where service has previously been disconnected by the DistCo, it is legal for a REC to remove all wires between the service fuse and the energy meter, and again all wires between the energy meter and the home-owner's switchboard. Any reasonable court of law, regulatory regime or administrative tribunal would "surely"(?) regard the customer arranging for a qualified contractor to remove HIS OR HER OWN WIRES at a residential property as DEFACTO ABOLISHMENT of the electricity supply. This assertion may well need to be tested in a court or tribunal... So now THIS home owner, already in advanced stages of commissioning his off-grid solar photovoltaic power system will be finalizing the 230-volt AC connection from his inverter to his switchboard, and enjoying a future of "NO ELECTRICITY BILLS".

This is Jamiel Yameen with CM Mose and Son Electric and Generac Generators. I'd like to take a minute of your time to talk about what happened in the Detroit area last week (December 2, 2014). You may not have heard about your it or maybe it hasn't registered what occurred but the entire electrical system, the grid went down in Detroit and here in Kansas City we might think that's an isolated problem but Detroit is a symptom of what's going on nationwide and frankly throughout the world. Our population is going to triple over the next years or so but what happened in Detroit took the power down to the entire city for most of the day and they're gonna have to spend was projected to be a billion dollars over the next decade to bring their system up to you current standards. The impact was last week that power down everywhere big businesses, emergency services, hospitals, police, fire, EMS, all those things were down. Small business, pharmacies that people not depend on were not able to operate. Doctors offices, veterinary services, security for banks and savings and loans were down. There was nothing that could occur. There were not enough generators in the Detroit area and could not be installed fast enough to get people up and running. If you're a homeowner maybe you can get by for a day or two maybe you've got a little Coleman stove you can cook on. Maybe you have a small gasoline generator that you can hook up your refrigerator. But if power is down systematically, how much gasoline are you going to store? And the gas station that you're going to be dependent on may not have a standby system to even pump gasoline. So the question is, you know, do you want to take a few minutes of your time to look at providing some redundancy, some control for yourself we're not dependent on a system that is clearly, without argument, aging and can't be kept up fast enough. The population is growing, our demands are growing. The need for electricity is three to five times what it was forty or fifty years ago and it is not unreasonable for us to have some redundancy in our homes and our small businesses. Standby generators used to be something that the ultra-rich could afford, and that's just not true anymore. The technology is readily accessible easy to install. Most standby generators can be installed in a day. Whether we're talking talking about your home or small business, you're not being silly to think about taking care of yourself. The Detroit QLine Streetcar is powered by lithium ion batteries for parts of its 3.3 mile (5.3 km) route. There are catenary electric lines for some sections while other parts don't have wires at all. Also a few stations have overhead power bars for quick charging while the streetcar is making a station stop. This is one of the first rail systems in the world to use battery power for portions of the route!

Hyundai Blue2 This cool concept car made its debut at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show. The Hyundai Blue2 is a midsize FCEV. PU_PA EV Teijin Group of State Sakura manufactures light electric vehicles. The company has named them PU_PA EV. Early AC generators and the Mechanicville Hydroelectric Station, it was one of the first few 3 phase AC power stations in North America. The powerhouse had 7 generators 750 kW each. It was built by alternating current pioneer Charles P. Steinmetz. 40 Hz. Elihu Thomson and Steinmetz were both involved in creating new and improved designs of generators for each new facility. The 1890s were a time of huge innovations in AC power at GE, Westinghouse, Oerlikon, Siemens, and other companies. This power station sent power 19 miles to Schenectady to supply power to General Electric and ALCO factories. It was also used as an experimental station to test new technology including monocyclic and HVDC transmission. It was the next generation after the Folsom Power House and Niagara Falls system
