Even as American values change and history is continually revised by new discoveries, George Washington remains one of the most venerated figures in human history. A highly esteemed soldier and general who became a pioneer politician, he appeals both to the intellectual types and those who liked to prove their worth through combat. Unfortunately, for all his acclaim, the casual reader only gets a vague impression of what he was like as a human. It’s unfortunate, because it leaves out a number of very interesting aspects of the life of a fascinating (if deeply flawed) man. Unfortunate for the average person, that is, not for George Washington. His legacy has literally been set in stone. So, let’s get to learning more about America’s most prominent Founding Father. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Help us translate our videos: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_queue?msg=10&tab=0 - Learn more why you might want to help: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6052538 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! As a young man, Washington had red hair. A popular myth is that he wore a wig, as was the fashion among some at the time. Washington did not wear a wig. Instead, he powdered his hair, as is represented in several portraits, including the well-known, unfinished Gilbert Stuart depiction called the "Athenaeum Portrait". Washington's height was variously recorded as 6 ft (1.83 m) to 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m). He registered six feet three and one-half inches when measured for his coffin. He had unusually great physical strength that amazed younger men. Jefferson called Washington "the best horseman of his age", and both American and European observers praised his riding. The horsemanship benefited his hunting, a favorite hobby. Washington was an excellent dancer and frequently attended the theater, often making Shakespearean references in his letters. Washington drank in moderation and precisely recorded gambling wins and losses. He disliked the excessive drinking, gambling, smoking, and profanity that were common in colonial Virginia. Washington grew tobacco but he eventually stopped smoking and considered drunkenness a man's worst vice. He was glad that post-Revolutionary Virginia society was less likely to "force [guests] to drink and to make it an honor to send them home drunk." Washington suffered from problems with his teeth throughout his life, and historians have tracked his experiences in great detail. He lost his first adult tooth when he was twenty-two and had only one left by the time that he became president. John Adams claimed that he lost them because he used them to crack Brazil nuts, but modern historians suggest that mercury oxide probably contributed to the loss, which he was given to treat illnesses such as smallpox and malaria. Washington had several sets of false teeth made, four of them by a dentist named John Greenwood. None of the sets were made from wood. The set made when he became president was carved from hippopotamus and elephant ivory, held together with gold springs. Prior to these, he had a set made with real human teeth, likely of the nine teeth that he purchased in 1784 from "several unnamed 'Negroes,' presumably Mount Vernon slaves" at less than a third of the going rate. Dental problems left Washington in constant pain, for which he took laudanum. This distress may be apparent in many of the portraits painted while he was still in office, including the one still used on the $1 bill. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington#Personal_life

Six-year-old George Washington had a shiny, new hatchet and couldn't wait to use it. He chopped a couple of small branches that had fallen to the ground near the family's stand of fruit trees and, feeling a surge of purpose, began hacking at a nearby cherry tree. Within a few minutes, little George's battle was over. He'd managed to chop down the tree, but as he wiped the sweat from his brow he realized the error of his ways. Not long after, he confessed that he'd cut down his father's favorite cherry tree. Although this enduring example of George Washington's virtuosity is purely fictional, trees played a pivotal role in his life. After all, didn't he eventually wear a full set of wooden teeth?

Here's a little known fact to sink your teeth into -- Did you know that George Washington’s second inaugural speech contained only 135 words? It's not because America's first president had nothing to say. Tooth historians say it's because the president was wearing new dentures, making it difficult for him to speak. Searching for other toothy morsels from history, our reporter Maxim Moskalkov went to the National Dentistry Museum in Baltimore to learn more. We all know that George Washington was our first president, that he “could not tell a lie,” and that he supposedly had wooden teeth (he didn’t). However, to us, he seems to be a distant figure; more monument than man. He is as familiar as the one dollar bill, but even there he looks old and grumpy. Is this the real George Washington? You might be surprised to find out that his contemporaries saw him very differently… They knew him as a warrior of the highest order. This episode takes a closer look at the real George Washington; you may be surprised to find that he consistently plunged himself headlong into battle, making him the first American action hero. We can’t start studying our history in SLAVERY. Even when we study the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which is important to study, we can’t start in 1619 or in the 1440s when the Portuguese get involved. We have to understand the history chronologically and deal with the 800 year occupation of the Africans known as the Moors who enter into the Iberian Peninsula, today known as Spain and Portugal, from North Africa in 711A.D.

Thing teachers teach as fact that are FALSE! Shocking truths about history and science lies that are still believed, from George Washington and the cherry tree to crushing coal into diamonds! #10. “Blue Blood”- One of the most commonly perpetuated “facts” that is actually false is that our veins look blue on the outside because deoxygenated blood is blue. Science teachers have been telling this myth for decades now and it has absolutely no basis in science. This myth probably was started by an unchecked hypothesis in a bygone time before medicine and science became as advanced as they are today. The truth is, when blood is without oxygen it actually is dark red. So why do our veins appear blue? Scientists say that is has to do with the way we perceive light. Our perception of color is due to the varying wavelengths of light. Red light permeates much deeper into flesh than blue light, because of this, veins closer to the skin are found to reflect more blue light back to our eyes. Not all people have veins with bluish hues either as varying skin tones can make the veins appear anywhere from green and brown to dark purple. #9. “I Cannot Tell a Lie”- This list is bound to make you question everything from your childhood at some point, so we might as well get right to it. George Washington did not chop down a cherry tree. This legend about the United States’ first president was probably started in a biography by Parson Weems that was written after Washington died. In the biography called ‘The Life of George Washington’ Weems even has a subtitle that states it contains ‘curious anecdotes’. This was in an attempt to highlight Washington’s qualities so that children would honor and look up to him, but history book writers and biographers after Weems left out that these were tall-tales and wrote the story down as if it were fact. However, George Washington was widely considered to be honest for a politician of his time. On a side-note he also didn’t really have wooden teeth, they were made of ivory, cow teeth and gulp--teeth bought from slaves. #8. “The Kite and Key”-Another myth about a founding father is that Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity while flying a kite in a thunderstorm. The problem is that electricity had already been studied and tested long before in its static form. Franklin started experimenting with it. Most historians also believe that the “famous” kite experiment never happened. In fact, scientists have found that if Benjamin Franklin had conducted this experiment he would have probably been killed by the lightning. However, Franklin was one of the first to posit that lightning was made up of electricity and did use the idea of the key and kite as a thought experiment in letters to scientist Peter Collinson. Collinson took the idea and made it into a practical experiment using a metal pole to conduct lightning’s electricity. Because of this Franklin is given credit for helping to discover this form of electricity. He also was one of the first to come up with the idea of positive and negative charges and even created rudimentary batteries. “Burn the Witch!”-If you are picturing the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 in your head the first image that is likely to pop-up is that of a witch being burned at the stake. This image is wrong. Contrary to what we have been taught in school not a single person who was executed during the period of religious fanaticism that was the Salem Witch trials was burned at the stake. In fact, less than two-dozen of the two-hundred people that were accused of witchcraft were even put to death at all, as the government officials in Massachusetts put a stop to it within a year of the onset of the trials. The idea that these alleged “witches” were burned at the stake probably manifested out of people combining Salem with the European witch hunts of the 14-1700s where the Holy Roman Empire had laws requiring convicted witches to be burned. Even then, many of those witches (a.k.a. innocent victims) were killed via hanging and then their bodies were burned. Some of the ways the accused witches in Salem were killed may be considered worse than being burned alive. Though most of them were hanged, there were seven cases of people found guilty of witchcraft dying in jail, possibly from starvation. In one case Giles Corey, who refused to take a plea bargain when he was accused of being a warlock, was pressed to death by stone weights. He remained strong and defiant until the end, his final words were: More Weight! More Weight!

The key sentence in this whole video is at 0:26 and says Washington dentures used human teeth that "LIKELY came from the mouths of slaves". But because The Root has an agenda to push (that this countries founders and all our current leaders were and are racist "MONSTERS" = because narrator Daniel Young needs her reparations check ya'll) they turn '"LIKELY came from the mouths of slaves" into "WASHINGTON DID use teeth from the mouths of Slaves". In all reality this probable lie originates from controversial historian Henry Wiencek's and his book "An Imperfect God: George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America" were Wiencek makes the claim that Washington had the teeth for his dentures "yanked from the mouths of his slaves" and goes on to say that Washington "paid for the teeth out of his own slaves mouths" and that ""it has long been known to specialist that some of Washington's teeth came from the mouths of his slaves" but Wiencek does not name any of these so called "specialist" and he does not give any foot-noted sources for any of his claims so his claims are unsubstantiated conjecture. HERE IS THE TRUTH: There is no proof that the human teeth used in some or any of Washington's dentures came from his slaves or any other slaves. As substantiated from the PBS article below = Washington saved several of his own teeth to be used in dentures. This is proven by a letter to his nephew were Washington asks his nephew to ship him his very own teeth. He also bought nine "negro teeth" according to an entry in one of his accounting ledger books. But we also know that Washington's dentist Le Moyer actually used to advertise in New York newspapers to buy teeth from whites and probably also from slaves and free blacks but that "sometimes the teeth were perfectly healthy; others were diseased and needed to be pulled anyway". So maybe that is why as this video claims Washington or his dentist Le Moyer "only chose all the bad teeth". But the best and the cheapest way to obtain human teeth for dentures in those days were to get them from dead people. So in the end Washington’s dentures could have been made from his own teeth, other white peoples teeth or any dead persons teeth. So IT CANNOT be said with any certainty that Washington used slaves teeth for his dentures. But because The Root has an agenda to push they turn a "likely" into a "did" and hope that none of their readers and viewers will notice the slight of hand or trickery in this video and will end up thinking that Washington for certain did use slave teeth for his dentures, cause you know, black people "NEED their reparations check". So damn those "culture vultures" who used the backs of black slaves to build this country so therefore Washington and his descendants (ie White people) "need to forfeit everything they own" and give blacks back what is theirs, because you know the narrator Daniel Young and The Root has "checked ALL the dental records" and Daniel Young and other black people are waiting on their reparations check. SO KEEP "WAITING FOR THOSE DOLLAR DOLLAR BILLS YA'LL" AND HOLD YOUR BREATH WHILE WAITING. Here is my writing and video on this topic. REFUTING HIDDEN COLORS 3: Did George Washington use his slaves teeth for dentures? https://screwyourfeelings.com/2016/12/20/refuting-hidden-colors-did-george-washington-use-his-slaves-teeth-for-dentures/ Here is the article referred to above. Day of the Tentacle Remastered - Remake of the classic 1993 sequel to Maniac Mansion. Mad scientist Ed Edison's Sludge-O-Matic has polluted clean streams, and his tentacle assistants split ways -- one goes evil, and the other is pretty useless, lol. Here, we have to save the world by going back one day in the Past, but unfortunately, the Edisons were broke and couldn't afford a real diamond. This throws our protagonists in various points throughout history in the same location. It's a very inventive game by LucasArts, and I'm glad they remade it -- I initially played it back when I was a teen, well after it was released, but I had a really low quality laptop that didn't have any audio support for the game. It's much more fun with the audio. Will we save the world? We'll see! DOTTR Steam Page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/388210/ Subscribe, Like, Comment, etc. if you want.
