Coney Island is known for being one of the oldest and largest amusement parks in America. It's also a treasure trove of historical landmarks. Today we're going to take you inside some of the top must-see sights that make Coney Island an American icon. With me today is my good friend Anna, a local New Yorker. She'll also be sharing some of her favorite things to do here. So right now, we're outside Williams Candy store. It is known for it's candied apples and freshly-made sweet treats. mmmm. That tastes good. You can taste the cashews and the nuttiness of the cashews and caramel, right? And there's marshmellows? It's a marshmellow in the center. Walking along Coney Island Boardwalk is a must. The boardwalk is also the longest and widest boardwalk in the world. You can smell the sugar of the funnel cakes, pizza, hot dogs. You see people eating ice cream, Italian ices... Here's my knish. I think I'm gonna get some mustard on it. Knishes were made popular in New York by Eastern Eurpoean immigrants in the early 1900s. ] A knish is actually a .. the mustard. So nice and spicy and the breading around the potato knish is deep fried in a nice, crispy way. Behind me is the Wonder wheel and this is another Coney Island landmark. Coney Island USA. It's a non-profit arts organization that helps continue the tradition of sideshow attractions. Contortionists, sword swallowers, bearded ladies.. this is where it all took place. It houses a daily freak show, the coney island museum and the annual mermaid parade. Cyclone. The oldest wooden rollercoaster in America that is still working. That first drop is an 85 foot 60 degree drop. For roller coaster afficionados, this would be on your bucketlist. What do you think we should do next Anna? I think the next thing we do, head down to the water. Gotta put your feet in the water. We're at coney island. Let's go. The sand is so fine. That's really nice. I'm glad we did this. A definite must. So at Los Angeles, at Venice Beach they have a Muscle Beach... This is Brooklyn's version of Muscle Beach. Only in New York. Nathan's Famous. The original hotdog stand was built in 1916 and this joint has been a landmark ever since. They hold an annual hot dog eating contest every fourth of July. And that's how you can enjoy Coney Island. Eat your way through it. Presented by Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC For more information go to http://s.sir.com/2arHLTE Brooklyn isn’t a city. It’s a metropolis of a borough. It’s also an idea. Its culture and urban sensibility have been exported to the point that Brooklynization is a phenomenon. Trendy restaurants, shops and businesses bearing the Brooklyn name--or one of its neighborhoods--appear in countries from Germany to Japan. And yet Brooklyn is very much a collection of communities, many with inviting green spaces and spectacular water views. Brooklyn real estate prices, whether pre-war, post-war or landmark, rival those across the East River in Manhattan. That doesn't surprise Brooklynites who never saw homes in the borough as a consolation prize. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former industrial areas where old factories and warehouses have been rehabbed into pricy condominiums and lofts. Dumbo is the acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. This territory, largely situated between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, is now an incubator for art and technology. It has managed to retain its gritty noir feel and industrial roots, which accounts for its starring role in countless films and photo shoots. Williamsburg has become synonymous with hipster culture--music, fashion and food. The low rents that initially attracted artists to these two enclaves of reinvention are a thing of the past. Classic “Brownstone Brooklyn” is found in neighborhoods like Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. Park Slope is a family-friendly community of shady blocks framed by a low-slung skyline that is adjacent to Prospect Park, the 585-acre green masterpiece designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, creators of New York’s Central Park. Brooklyn Heights is entirely a historic district--New York’s first, designated in 1965. The neighborhood is affluent, quiet and filled with architectural gems. One of its greatest treasures is the cantilevered Promenade that overlooks New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan as well as Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park, which opened in 2010, is a massive complex of athletic fields, food concessions, bike paths and pool with a full schedule of cultural events, entertainment and activities. From Brooklyn Heights, New York’s financial district is a quick zip on the subway. But that’s not the only way to access Manhattan. The favorite means is walking to it across iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Driving Downtown Streets - Myrtle Avenue - Brooklyn New York City NY USA - Episode 24. Starting Point: Myrtle Avenue - https://goo.gl/maps/HBEGaVUEstD2 . Myrtle Avenue is a 8.0-mile-long (12.9 km) street that runs from the Flatbush Avenue Extension in Downtown Brooklyn to Jamaica Avenue in Richmond Hill, Queens, in New York City, New York, United States. In the neighborhoods of Fort Greene and Clinton Hill, the development of Myrtle Avenue was directly related to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, built in 1801. In 1847 Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn's first park, was built on the south side of western Myrtle Avenue. During World War II, the Navy Yard employed more than 71,000 people, many of them African American shipbuilders. As a result the demand for housing in the area increased, prompting the New York City Housing Authority to build the Walt Whitman and Raymond Ingersoll public houses on Myrtle Avenue in 1944. By the early 1970s the vitality of Myrtle Avenue began to decline, mainly because of the decommissioning of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the curtailing of the elevated railway. At its nadir of decline, the street became known to many Brooklynites as "Murder Avenue". In the 1990s the western end of Myrtle Avenue was closed from Jay Street to Flatbush Avenue Extension to create the pedestrian-only MetroTech Center. Adding to the MetroTech Center's revitalization of the neighborhood, a modern revitalization movement is in effect by a collaboration of community organizations like the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project LDC (MARP), the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Improvement district BID, and the Myrtle Avenue Merchants Association. Some parts of Myrtle Avenue, for example around Pratt Institute, have recently become a main street of commerce with many trendy restaurants and boutique retail shops. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrtle_Avenue Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City's five boroughs, with a Census-estimated 2,636,735 residents in 2015. It is geographically adjacent to the borough of Queens at the southwestern end of Long Island. Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, the most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, and the second-most densely populated county in the United States, after the county of New York (which is coextensive with the borough of Manhattan). With a land area of 71 square miles (180 km2) and water area of 26 square miles (67 km2), Kings County is New York's fourth-smallest county by land area and third-smallest by total area, though it is the second-largest among the city's five boroughs. Today, if each of the five boroughs was a separate city, Brooklyn would rank as the third most populous city in the U.S., behind Los Angeles and Chicago. Brooklyn was an independent incorporated city (and previously an authorized village and town within the provisions of the New York State Constitution), until January 1, 1898, when, after a long political campaign and public relations battle during the 1890s, according to the new Municipal Charter of "Greater New York," Brooklyn was consolidated with the other cities, boroughs, and counties to form the modern "City of New York" surrounding the Upper New York Bay with five constituent boroughs. The borough continues, however, to maintain a distinct culture. Many Brooklyn neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves. Brooklyn's official motto, displayed on the Borough seal and flag, is Eendraght Maeckt Maght, which translates from early modern Dutch to "Unity makes strength". In the first decades of the 21st century, Brooklyn has experienced a renaissance as an avant garde destination for hipsters, with concomitant gentrification, dramatic house price increases, and a decrease in housing affordability. Since 2010, Brooklyn has evolved into a thriving hub of entrepreneurship and high technology startup firms, and of postmodern art and design. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn http://www.nycgo.com/boroughs-neighborhoods/brooklyn https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g60827-Activities-Brooklyn_New_York.html https://www.facebook.com/places/Things-to-do-in-New-York-New-York/108424279189115/ http://myrtleavenue.org/

Brooklyn remains the most densely populated part of the City of New York. As a rule of thumb, strolling through the projects is never a wise idea. Local crime lords and gangs impose their own versions of the law, with violence arguably being a constant threat. http://www.dedicrajko.com Long Island is an island in the southeast of the U.S. state of New York, just east of Manhattan. Stretching northeast into the Atlantic Ocean, Long Island contains four counties, two of which are boroughs of New York City (Queens and Brooklyn), and two of which are mainly suburban (Nassau and Suffolk). The term "Long Island" often refers only to Nassau and Suffolk counties in order to differentiate them from New York City, though all four counties are on the island and part of the New York metropolitan area

A tongue-in-cheek demo of New York City's varied accents by each borough: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan. I explain not only how to make the sounds but more importantly, the psychological reason behind them - sorta : ). Voiced my me, a NYC native - this is the real deal folks! Ratings appreciated. p.s. I know it s/b "you're" not "your" & that the map of Brooklyn is too small (on the left) but it was too late to fix. I did not attempt African American/Latino accents as I can't do them justice. Thanks for watching. :p

Frank Pinello has eaten his share of pizza in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but it's time for him to check out New York City's other boroughs—Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx—to discover some of the city's best slices and pies. We start off in Queens with our favorite Renaissance man Action Bronson for a slice tour of two of his favorite places. Then we're off to Staten Island with VICE security guard and foodie extraordinaire Vic Zagami to get some crispy bar pies and the legendary vodka pie at Goodfella's. The episode ends with a visit to the Bronx for a walk down Arthur Avenue with Mark Iacono, Frank's favorite pizza friend. Frank and Mark's walk is filled with fresh cheese, prosciutto, clams, tripe—and, of course, more pizza. Best Hotdog New York: Nathan's Famous Coney Island Brooklyn. Nathan's Famous is an American chain of fast food restaurants specializing in hot dogs which humbly started as a hot dog stand in 1916 by Nathan Handwerker and his wife Ida who immigrated from Poland and started the business with their life savings of $300. Their success was attributed to selling 5 cent all beef hotdogs made with a secret blend of spices from Ida’s grandmother. Today we are visiting the original Nathan's restaurant which stands at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues in the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. The Handwerker family sold all their 20 branches to Equicorp in 1986 for $19 million. Currently Nathan’s has a market capitalization of $260 million there are more than 1500 stores in 18 countries across the globe. Our favorites at Nathan’s include their Bacon Cheese Dog, Bacon Chili Dog and Shrimp and Fries. For refreshments try their Orangeade, Lemonade or a pint of their Coney Island Lager. A Dutch couple took this 16mm film almost a century ago. Dino Cali commented: 'Lower and Central Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Woolworth Building and the Metlife Tower (at the end)'. How much has changed in the meantime ? In the 17th century New York = Nieuw Amsterdam, was a Dutch settlement. We still lament having given it up ! Note that at 2.47 a swastika is painted on a touring bus. The Rialto Sightseeing New York City used a right-facing swastika as their logo at the time. The sound was added by me. For more check out http://myworldtravel.weebly.com Breathtaking View from Atlantic Ocean Of Brooklyn & Staten Island New York City Brooklyn is New York City's most populous borough with 2.5 million residents, and second largest in area. It is also the western most county on Long Island. Since 1896, Brooklyn has had the same boundaries as Kings County, which is now the most populous county in New York State and the second most densely populated county in the United States, after New York County (Manhattan). Brooklyn was an independent city until its consolidation with New York City in 1898, and continues to maintain a distinct culture, independent art scene, and unique architectural heritage. Many Brooklyn neighborhoods are ethnic enclaves where particular ethnic groups and cultures predominate. The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area on the western end of Long Island, then largely inhabited by a Native American people, the Lenape (often erroneously referred to by the Lenape place-name, "Canarsee", in contemporary colonial documents). The first Dutch settlements, established in 1634, were called Midwout (Midwood) and Flatbush (Vlacke Bos). The Dutch also purchased land during the 1630s from the Mohawks in present-day Gowanus, Red Hook, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Bushwick. The Village of Breuckelen, named for Breukelen in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands, was authorized by the Dutch West India Company in 1646; it became the first true municipality in what is now New York State. At the time, Breuckelen was part of New Netherland. Other villages which were later incorporated into Brooklyn were Boswijk (Bushwick), Nieuw Utrecht (New Utrecht), and Nieuw Amersfoort (Flatlands). A few houses and cemeteries still bear witness to the Dutch origins of the borough of Brooklyn. The Dutch lost Breuckelen in the British conquest of New Netherland in 1664. In 1683, the British reorganized the Province of New York into twelve counties, each of which was sub-divided into towns. Over time, the name evolved from Breuckelen, to Brockland, to Brocklin, to Brookline, to Brookland and eventually, to Brooklyn.Kings County was one of the original counties, and Brooklyn was one of the original six towns within Kings County. The county was named in honor of King Charles II of England. In August and September of 1776, the Battle of Long Island (also called the Battle of Brooklyn) was fought in Kings County. It was the first major battle in the American Revolutionary War following the Declaration of Independence and the largest battle of the entire conflict. While General George Washington's defeat on the battlefield may have cast early doubts on his abilities as a military tactician and leader, he did keep the Continental Army intact with a brilliant overnight tactical retreat, across the East River, a maneuver seen by historians as one of his greatest practical accomplishments. New York became the British political and military base of operations in North America. This encouraged the departure of patriots and their sympathizers while attracting loyalist refugees fleeing the other colonies. Loyalists swelled the population of the surrounding area, including Brooklyn. Correspondingly, the region became the focus of General Washington's intelligence activities (see Intelligence in the American Revolutionary War). The British also began to hold American patriot prisoners-of-war in rotting hulks anchored in Wallabout Bay off Brooklyn. More American prisoners died in these prison-ships than the sum of all the American battle casualties of the Revolutionary War.
