Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 with a Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier You find many infos in the movie. Some extra, if those are not enough: - the mic was facing the side of the speaker-cone, so close as possible - signal chain: guitar - ibanez TS808 - amp - mic (Shure SM57) - mic preamp (Studio Projects VTB1) - Macbook - I used Garageband for recording, and I DID NOT EDIT THE RECORDINGS (no EQ, no compressor, no effects, only a Peek Limiter not to run over 0 dB) - additional settings on the amp: 6L6 tubes; silicon diodes; bold - intro music: Tuzmadar (my ex-band) - Cirkusz; from 00:37 Tuzmadar - Tisztulj világ; from 9:26 Tuzmadar - Szép hazugság (White Lie) -- these songs were recorded with a Mark 3 and a Mark 4 head -- I hope I can help some people, who can't decide what to think about this amp and/or guitar. Take it easy!

Here we are recording from the FX Send from the Boogie and straight into my DAW with some EQ and Impulse Responses on the track. We are missing a power amp emulation here, but it still sounds better than the Cab Clone! IMPORTANT!!! YOUR AMPLIFIER MUST HAVE A SPEAKER CAB OR DUMMY LOAD ATTACHED TO DO THIS TRICK! YOU COULD RUIN YOUR GEAR IF YOU TRY TO DO THIS WITHOUT A LOAD ON THE AMP.

Direct Recording, Silent Recording, Amplifier Load Box, Compensated Headphone Driver, and More... CABCLONE! http://www.mesaboogie.com/Product_Info/pedals/cab-clone-simulator.html The CABCLONE™ is a passive Cabinet Simulator/Speaker+Mic alternative with a built-in amp load. It provides a direct interface of your guitar amp's Speaker Output to the input of a mixing console, microphone preamp or even direct to your converters (recorder) with or without the need for a speaker cabinet. It's also a Compensated Headphone Driver that delivers a great sounding, great feeling, headphone-friendly version of your amp's Tone that's perfect for late night practice sessions or anytime you want to play without others listening. The exceptionally toneful and direct recording circuit AND the built-in speaker load allows you to use the CabClone for silent, direct recording with your favorite amp, or -- via the THROUGH jack -- you can capture the direct signal while powering your favorite cabinet at the same time. Capturing BOTH the CabClone Direct signal AND mic'ing your cabinet provides real world possibilities in recording environments for blending and varied mic techniques. It also offers options for live playing, whether you need to play 'cab-less' (direct) or you want both a direct sound AND a mic'd sound for your monitors, in-ear monitors or Front of House. And last but definitely not least, the HEADPHONES Output allows you to enjoy the sonic shaping and great feel of the CabClone's DIRECT BALANCED OUT through a set of quality headphones for silent playing with your favorite amplifier. At last, you can play through your amp (big or little) "silently" late at night when the rest of the world is asleep and still enjoy your favorite tones that beautiful and real amp bounce & feel. Add some Delay and Reverb in your amp's Loop and you'll be lost in a world of fat, rich, expressive guitar-bliss for hours. Whether for "direct" live performance, recording or just personal enjoyment of your favorite tube-amp with headphones, the CABCLONE is a great sounding and feeling tool for any guitarist needing to capture great amp sounds quickly and easily. All playing clips were recorded direct exclusively with the various modes of the CabClone with no additional mics and minimal post processing normally used in audio/video optimizing. This is my first demo on YouTube, so I hope you enjoy it. I decided to try to record the direct recording/phones out from my Mesa Boogie F-50 into my Presonus Firepod. This was connected to my Mac Mini and was recorded in Garageband. There is no EQ or compression of any kind in order to allow you to hear the results. For me, the cleans are nice but the dirt is lacking. Guitar: Japanese market Charvette, MIJ, with an SD JB in the bridge and an old SD '59 in the neck. All the gain is from the amp. I used the amp reverb on all the clean tracks, and a couple of the cleaner dirty ones. The first 5 samples are from the clean channel, and the final 7 are from the dirty channel. I wrote all the little riffs. If people like the video, I'll try some more, beginning with mic'ing the Mesa. The direct out, on balance, does not do this fantastic amp justice, but is more than adequate for headphone playing. When my band records again, I'm planning to use the direct out along with a close mic in order to fatten things up/apply post-production effects. Please comment!

Just a test I did for myself that I thought I would share. When I first got this amp I had a hard time dialing it in and it took me a while to figure out that the master volume control plays a big part in achieving the desired tone. Its not like a lot of other high gain amps (like PV 6505/5150) where the master volume doesn't affect the tone as much. I haven't seen too many discussions about this in forums and I think theres only one other video about this topic on YouTube. So I hope this helps somehow. I still have a lot to learn about this amp so any comments will be helpful. When it comes to tube amps (and playing metal), a lot of people will tell you to turn up the amp as loud as you can to get more tube saturation. But with this amp, there is definitely a sweet spot with the master volume control. Your tone will change depending on where you set it. A small change in settings can make a big difference so you have to experiment and find the right setting for you. Its not just about setting the EQ section correctly and turning up the volume to get more tube saturation. To demonstrate this, I recorded 7 different audio clips where the EQ controls are set the same, the only difference is where the master volume knob is set. The guitar was reamped so the performance is the same in each clip. I set the mic pre gain so that each clip came in to ProTools at around -10dBFS. Listen carefully to the midrange and low end on the clips. The differences are subtle in the first three, but they would be much more apparent in a full mix. The first setting is around 7:00 on the master and the last one is around 13:00. I didn't go past this cause even at 50 watts, this is one loud SOB. If you listen on small speakers it will seem like the clips get louder, but thats because you can only hear the midrange and not the low end. The further you turn up the volume, the less low end you have and more mids. The signal gets compressed. At about 13:00 (the last clip) its squashed to hell and sounds mushy (which can be cool but prob not for most metal). The audio wave on the top left shows this. At 7:00 (first clip) you can see big peaks where the palm mutes are. Thats the low end chug. Those peaks get smaller the more you turn up the amp. So like I mentioned there is definitely a sweet spot depending on your preference. The master volume control is like another EQ knob. No compression or EQ used except for hi pass at 60 Hz. So you can hear the raw tones. Anyway hope this helps and please comment. Cheers... Recorded at Studio 77 with one SM57.

Mesa Boogie Cab Clone Demystified by Producer Michael James Producer/Mixer Michael James (New Radicals, Hole, Robben Ford, Edwin McCain, L7) demonstrates in real time how to use Cab Clone in the recording studio, without connecting a speaker to the guitar amp, while overdubbing guitar parts on the Dan Reardon song, "95." Michael (michaeljamesproducer.com) was in the middle of the mix when Reardon (http://www.danreardonmusic.com/music) requested additional guitar parts. Because he did not want to toast his ears by cranking up a miked speaker cabinet, Michael chose Cab Clone for its ability to do "silent" recording so that he could monitor at a quiet level. Audio examples include the guitar tone with and without reverb ambience, as well as soloed and mixed into the track.
