On visiting the Field Museum of Natural History here in Chicago, I wanted to see their outstanding displays of fossilized dinosaurs, including their most recent acquisition, the amazing Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil known as Sue, which is the largest and most complete example, and has set new standards for how large these enormous animals were thought to have grown. In another video, entitled "Field Museum, Chicago - Ancient Egypt," I show some of their extensive collection of Egyptian mummies and artifacts.

Chicago, once an upstart crossroads, emerged as a world hub by the late 19th century, and it decided to celebrate with The World's Columbian Exposition in 1983. Ostensibly commemorating the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World, it was really a chance to showcase the advent of urban Exceptionalism. With the flowers of industry and commerce blooming, there came new prosperity, and with that the means and desire to create halls where scientific specimens, works of art, and other objects of value were displayed. This was the wellspring for the Great Museums of Chicago.

The Field Museum is a natural history museum that is well worth the trip. If you love dinosaurs, stuffed animals, and ancient Egypt this is a place you need to see. I was quite surprised on how minimal the crowds were when I visited which was nice. If you need to kill 2-3 hours it's definitely a place you'll want to check out.

The Field Museum of Natural History, located in Chicago, Illinois, USA, is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. The museum maintains its status as a premier natural history museum through the size and quality of its educational and scientific programs, as well as due to its extensive scientific specimen and artifact collections. 45 seconds in....you will see the fetus exhibit. This has been on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL since I was child (circa 1970's) and I believe my father stated this exhibit was around when he was younger. These are bodies of human fetuses which were stillborn or once living, died of natural causes, and donated to science. I am not certain how they are preserved, but this has to be one of the most fascinating things I have ever seen. I often wonder if they had lived, who they would be today.

In 1898, two African lions began attacking and consuming railway workers in Tsavo, Kenya. First reports estimated that 135 people fell victim to these "man-eaters," but further research published in 2009 lessened that number to 35 individuals. Over the years, different theories as to what motivated these attacks have varied, and recently we got to talk with two experts who are working towards finding an answer. ↓Need more info?↓ Bruce Patterson's book, "The Lions of Tsavo: Exploring the Legacy of Africa's Notorious Man-Eaters." http://amzn.to/2bCqx3a More about Bruce's work at The Field Museum: https://www.fieldmuseum.org/about/staff/profile/66 "Cooperation and individuality among man-eating lions," Yeakel et al. 2009 http://www.pnas.org/content/106/45/19040.full "Legendary 'man-eating' lions of Tsavo likely ate about 35 people -- not 135, scientists say." https://www.fieldmuseum.org/science/blog/man-eating-lions-ate-fewer-people-believed Dr. Larisa DeSantis' website: http://bit.ly/2bA47lq Colonel John H. This week I visited the Field Museum of Natural History here in Chicago for the first time since, probably, some time in the 1970s. There were still some very familiar exhibits and items, including the Egyptian mummies and artifacts in the Ancient Egypt exhibit, which is now housed in a wonderfully spooky, but very dimly lit, faux Egyptian tomb. I suspect that the dim lighting is partly for atmosphere, and partly to protect these very, very old items from too much light, which could fade their colors. In another video, entitled "Field Museum, Chicago -- Dinosaurs," I show mostly the larger fossilized dinosaurs on display, including Sue, the remarkable Tyrannosaurus Rex.

In a new exhibit, Chicago's Field Museum has revived elements from its controversial 1933 show, "Races of Mankind," consisting of 104 bronze statues that depict races from around the world. Most of the statues were banished by 1969 as public opinion on race evolved. NewsHour's Megan Thompson reports on the return of the dubious display.
