Great Museums: Elevated Thinking: The High Line in New York City

56:50
Narrated by actress Susan Sarandon, this hour-long documentary film showcases the High Line, a most unusual and unlikely public park. Since opening in 2009, it has become a top global tourist destination, with nearly 5 million visitors annually. Since 1998, Great Museums' call to action has been find the museum in your own backyard. The High Line is a perfect example. "The long, narrow High Line is like a gallery in a museum where the city itself is on display," explains co-executive productive Marc Doyle. "You see the Statue of Liberty looking one way and the Empire State building looking the other." The mile-and-a half-long High Line offers visitors a carefully curated world of woodlands, thickets, prairies and meadows - floating 30 feet in the air - through 22 blocks of Manhattan's West Side. It is like a living museum of plants - a tour de force of public landscaping - carefully curated atop an abandoned elevated railroad that was saved from the wrecking ball. "We filmed the High Line over the course of two years to capture the full glory of all four seasons," says Chesney Doyle, co-executive producer of Great Museums. "Elevated Thinking" is the story of a grassroots effort, led by Friends of the High Line co-founders Robert Hammond and Joshua David, to buck city hall and save a massive, derelict, mile-and-half-long, freight railway from demolition. Against all odds, they built a coalition of neighbors, real estate developers, philanthropists, and city officials, including the support of the Bloomberg administration. CSX Transportation, which had purchased the High Line 1998, supported the idea of repurposing the High Line and eventually donated the structure to the city. "Many residents thought it was a big, ugly piece of junk in the sky," says Great Museums' Chesney Doyle. "Now it's a model for communities everywhere."

Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), Guggenheim & Museum of Natural History - New York, USA (HD)

Copyright: ®Epic Argentina 2018 Website: http://www.epicheaven.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EpicMediaArgentina/timeline/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/epicargentina ---- Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met), Guggenheim & Museum of Natural History - New York, USA (HD) METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART (MET) The Metropolitan Museum of Art, colloquially "the Met", is located in New York City and is the largest art museum in the United States, and is among the most visited art museums in the world. Its permanent collection contains over two million works, divided among seventeen curatorial departments. The main building, on the eastern edge of Central Park along Manhattan's Museum Mile, is by area one of the world's largest art galleries. A much smaller second location, The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan, contains an extensive collection of art, architecture, and artifacts from Medieval Europe. On March 18, 2016, the museum opened the Met Breuer museum at Madison Avenue in the Upper East Side; it extends the museum's modern and contemporary art program. The permanent collection consists of works of art from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, paintings and sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and an extensive collection of American and modern art. The Met maintains extensive holdings of African, Asian, Oceanian, Byzantine, Indian, and Islamic art. The museum is home to encyclopedic collections of musical instruments, costumes and accessories, as well as antique weapons and armor from around the world. Several notable interiors, ranging from first-century Rome through modern American design, are installed in its galleries. GUGGENHEIM The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, often referred to as The Guggenheim, is an art museum located at 1071 Fifth Avenue on the corner of East 89th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is the permanent home of a continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art and also features special exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, the artist Hilla von Rebay. It adopted its current name after the death of its founder, Solomon R. Guggenheim, in 1952. In 1959, the museum moved from rented space to its current building, a landmark work of 20th-century architecture. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the cylindrical building, wider at the top than the bottom, was conceived as a "temple of the spirit". Its unique ramp gallery extends up from ground level in a long, continuous spiral along the outer edges of the building to end just under the ceiling skylight. The building underwent extensive expansion and renovations in 1992 (when an adjoining tower was built) and from 2005 to 2008. MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY The American Museum of Natural History, located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest museums in the world. New York Natural History Museum (Ch61) New York - USA

New York Natural History Museum (Ch61) New York - USA Subscribe: http://www.youtube.com/user/ethmx?sub_confirmation=1 In this video i continue exploring New York City and after a rainy morning venture out of my hostel for a wonder around the city. I begin by checking out the Brooklyn Bridge then moving onto The World Trade Centre Memorial before finally heading to The Natural History Museum which is located at Central Park West & 79th St. You can also access the museum from its own subway station which is served by the A & C train. The Museum is one of New Yorks must see's in my opinion but beware that it can get rather busy at times, especially during rainy days. The museum has several levels covering a variety of periods and continents, my personal favourite was the Dinosaur exhibition with a full size T-Rex skeleton. In for my next video I'll be heading to Florida to catch up with a friend i made in Cambodia. All footage filmed using an iPhone 5s and edited using Final Cut Pro and occasionally GoPro Studio. Occasionally use a GoPro Hero 3. ♥ OPEN ME ♥ Uploading a little early so Cathy Nguyen doesn't have to stay up too late. :D xo A few days ago we went to the Museum of Natural History in New York for class! Our classmate had tickets and she mentioned an exhibit to the professor and the professor decided we would take a field trip! I don't think this really had anything to do with class, but we had a great time. And as you can see, holding the butterflies made me sooooo happy!! :) Too bad my camera died after the museum and I forgot my charger, because then we ended up going out to eat (Manasa, Tily, Alice, and I) and it was also pretty fun. Either way, I hope you enjoy this clip, just another glance into my daily life. :D 🎉 Please subscribe for more great content like this! 1048 Fifth Avenue: From Mansion to Museum

41:34
Andrew S. Dolkart, Professor of Historic Preservation at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, presents a colorful history of Neue Galerie New York's home at 1048 Fifth Avenue. From its origin as one of Manhattan's finest private residences, to a museum for early twentieth century fine and decorative art from Germany and Austria, Professor Dolkart offers a candid account of the building, neighborhood, and the eccentric families who once occupied 1048 Fifth Avenue. The building housing Neue Galerie New York is located at 1048 Fifth Avenue, at 86th Street, in an area known as Museum Mile. The building was completed in 1914 by Carrère & Hastings, also architects of the New York Public Library. It has been designated a landmark by the New York Landmarks Commission and is generally considered to be one of the most distinguished buildings ever erected on Fifth Avenue. Commissioned by industrialist William Starr Miller, it was later occupied by society doyenne Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III and subsequently by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. It was purchased by Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky in 1994. Annabelle Selldorf is the architect for the renovation of the building. Her work for Neue Galerie New York has involved restoring 1048 Fifth Avenue to its original state, while adapting it to the most stringent museum standards with regard to the display and preservation of works of art. The building book, "1048 Fifth Avenue: From Mansion to Museum" by author Andrew S. Dolkart, can be purchased in-store or online at shop.neuegalerie.org.

The blue whale as described from the site: The Blue Whale At 94 feet long, the 21,000-pound fiberglass model of a female blue whale is a Museum treasure. Blue whales have been hunted to near extinction. Today, the Museum's blue whale serves as a reminder of our responsibility to our environment, both on land and in the sea. This is a model of a blue whale found in 1925 off the southern tip of South America. The largest animal alive today, this mammal species is fast, traveling up to 30 miles an hour. Blue whales are also loud, their deep sounds heard 620 miles away. They maintain their weight (sometimes more than 100 tons) on a diet of small crustaceans called krill.
