Smithsonian Institution - The National Gallery of Art - Washington D.C.

10:10

The two first ladies then strolled through the building's Rotunda and past a statue of Mercury. It was the second day of French President Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron's visit to Washington. J.M.W. Turner (National Gallery of Art)

32:57
Concise 33-minute overview of the life and career of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), described on Wikipedia as “an English Romanticist landscape painter, watercolourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. He is commonly known as ‘the painter of light’ and his work is regarded as a Romantic preface to Impressionism.” The film shows lots of his paintings as well as numerous archival illustrations to depict the time he lived in, supplemented by location shots of the places he lived and worked and the sites he visited on his painting trips, including Wales and Italy. Effective narration by Jeremy Irons. Produced in 2007 in conjunction with an exhibit at the National Gallery of Art.

Arthur Wheelock '65: "Dutch Paintings at the National Gallery of Art: Untold Stories"

52:21
"Dutch Paintings at the National Gallery of Art: The Untold Stories Behind the Acquisitions of the Rembrandts, Vermeers and Other Treasures in the Collection" —Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr. '65, Curator of Northern Baroque Painting, National Gallery of Art — The National Gallery of Art is a relatively new museum -- it opened in 1941 -- but its collection of Dutch paintings is one of the finest in the world. How did the great masterpieces that now grace its walls come to the National Gallery and where had they beenbefore? Every painting has its own story, and some are quite dramatic. This talk will look at some of the fascinating tales that lie behind the acquisitions of these works: the chase to find them, the deals that were made to possess them, and the arguments that persuaded these collectors to become donors. Arthur Wheelock '65, is Curator of Northern Baroque Painting at the National Gallery of Art and Professor of Art History at the University of Maryland. He received a Williams College Bicentennial Medal in 1996. Produced by Bill Matthiesen '70, Berkshire Film & Video, www.bfv.com

Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

03:20
Sergei Diaghilev was an art critic, a music and art historian and a brilliant promoter. He wished to integrate Russian and European art and that led him to the idea of establishing a cycle of Russian seasons in Paris, which were overwhelming successes. He brought together some of the greatest artists of the early 20th century to modernize and revolutionize theater and dance with his Ballets Russes (1909-1929). Its designers combined intense colors that were unknown on Western stages and it marked a renaissance in the visual and performing arts. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. honors Diaghilev's Ballets Russes with an exhibition that continues through October 6, 2013. The recording of Claude Debussy's "L'Apres midi d'un Faune" is by the RFCM orchestra conducted by Dr. Keith J. Salmon.

Trump and Macron tour gallery, view painting by Paul Cézanne, titled The Artist's Father, Reading "L'Événement" (1866) 3. Various of Cézanne painting STORYLINE: Melania Trump and Brigitte Macron have ditched the White House for the nearby National Gallery of Art to see the works of Paul Cezanne. The first ladies of the United States and France toured an exhibit of about 60 works by the French post-impressionist painter. They paused near a portrait of Cézanne's father reading a newspaper. Mary Morton, the musem's curator of French paintings, explained that Cezanne had a difficult relationship with his father, who was a banker. The two first ladies then strolled through the building's Rotunda and past a statue of Mercury. It was the second day of French President Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron's visit to Washington. Later Tuesday, the Trumps are hosting the couple at the administration's first state dinner. ========================================================================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
