How New York Got Its Skyline

04:22
Why do so many of New York's older skyscrapers have a similar design? The answer can be traced back to a monumental 1916 zoning law, which established “setback” requirements for buildings above a certain height. In the heart of the Financial District, the Equitable Building, a historic skyscraper that predates the law, remains a symbol of the excesses of the pre-zoning era. Driving Downtown - Bronx 4K - New York City USA

29:21
Driving Downtown - Bronx New York City New York USA - Episode 40. Starting Point: https://goo.gl/maps/8gNbo8irtR82 . The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, within the U.S. state of New York. The Bronx contains one of the five poorest Congressional Districts in the United States, the 15th, but its wide diversity also includes affluent, upper-income and middle-income neighborhoods such as Riverdale, Fieldston, Spuyten Duyvil, Schuylerville, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Morris Park and Country Club.[10][11] The Bronx, particularly the South Bronx, saw a sharp decline in population, livable housing, and the quality of life in the late 1960s and the 1970s, culminating in a wave of arson. Since then the communities have shown significant redevelopment starting in the late 1980s before picking up pace from the 1990s until today. About a quarter of the Bronx's area is open space,[5] including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo in the borough's north and center. These open spaces are situated primarily on land deliberately reserved in the late 19th century as urban development progressed north and east from Manhattan. The name "Bronx" originated with Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639.[6][7][8] The native Lenape were displaced after 1643 by settlers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Bronx received many immigrant groups as it was transformed into an urban community, first from various European countries (particularly Ireland, Germany and Italy) and later from the Caribbean region (particularly Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic), as well as African American migrants from the southern United States.[9] This cultural mix has made the Bronx a wellspring of both Latin music and hip hop. Revitalization In 1997, the Bronx was designated an All America City by the National Civic League, acknowledging its comeback from the decline of the mid-century.[65] In 2006, The New York Times reported that "construction cranes have become the borough's new visual metaphor, replacing the window decals of the 1980s in which pictures of potted plants and drawn curtains were placed in the windows of abandoned buildings."[66] The borough has experienced substantial new building construction since 2002. Between 2002 and June 2007, 33,687 new units of housing were built or were under way and $4.8 billion has been invested in new housing. In the first six months of 2007 alone total investment in new residential development was $965 million and 5,187 residential units were scheduled to be completed. Much of the new development is springing up in formerly vacant lots across the South Bronx.[67] Sports The Bronx is the home of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g47369-Activities-Bronx_New_York.html http://www.nycgo.com/boroughs-neighborhoods/the-bronx

Rhapsody in Blue - George Gershwin - New York City

16:25
Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition by George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band written in 1924, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. Although Gershwin himself spoke of the rhapsody as "a musical kaleidoscope of America", Rhapsody in Blue has often been interpreted as a musical portrait of New York City. This video montage of Manhattan was edited by Gilda Tabarez from various wallpapers, stock footage courtesy of Shutterstock (used with permission) and images found on Wikimedia Commons. Panoramic photo of NYC photographed by Jnn13, stitched by LiveChocolate. Music performed by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Bernstein.

The Creation of "New York Now and Then: A Tribute to George Bradford Brainerd'

If you like this, I strongly suggest my most recent New York documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXM-g-UAJiA. I spent a year creating the recent film. As for the video above, New York Now and Then explores 28 before and after photos spanning 140 years, showing how the short film was made. New York Now and Then is all about remembering the photographer, but also is about entertaining the viewer with photos showing New York then and now, or as you may notice often they are now and then. A Taste of New York

03:00
This is the third episode of our independent „A Taste of ...“ time lapse series. In September 2016 we visited this awesome city to try out some new time lapse stuff. It took us 10 days, a lot of burgers and one helicopter ride to produce this video. 10 days is very little time to discover this city of endless opportunities, so we hardly slept anything and shot day and night for this time lapse film. The city that never sleeps indeed! The Taxishot: Over the 10 days we took photos of yellow cabs whenever we had time to from as many different angles as possible. So we gathered 2000 (!) photos in total we had to sort afterwards and compile to a hyperlapse around a cab in post production. It took us 5 whole days in post production to get this one shot. Technical Details: In 10 days we shot 65.000 Photos taking up 2,6 TB of our hard drives. The final 3 minute video took 36h to render on the best equipped iMac available. NEW YORK CITY | New York in the Snow Photography | Vivienne Gucwa

New York in the Snow Book: http://amzn.to/2s5naXT More info below. New York City. My Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/travelinglens/ Spoken word poetry set to New York in the snow photography by Vivienne Gucwa (words + images mine). Snow photography is how I express the raw, emotional feeling of nostalgia tinged with loneliness and longing. In a city of millions, feeling lonely and feeling isolation is an unspoken visceral state of being. The nostalgic aspect of NYC in the snow at night brings all of these feelings to the surface. This is an excerpt of the poetry, prose, and photography from my 2nd photography book called New York in the Snow releasing in September of 2017. My New York in the Snow book here: http://amzn.to/2oUFZNa My book has all the locations, camera settings, and cameras used detailed under every photo (more photos than in this video) as well as more prose and writing. I have been photographing every snowstorm in NYC for the last 6 years. In this video I attempt to explain why I walk up to 8 miles at a time through blizzards, nor'easters, and all sorts of snowstorms by revealing the themes I explore with my New York City photography of the snow. This spoken word video deals a range of emotions including: loneliness, isolation, anxiety, longing, and nostalgia.
