The walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn Bridge Park on that sunny day was one of the most memorable sightseeing we've done in New York. By the base of the bridge on the Brooklyn side we strolled along the the walkways. Here you get beautiful views of both the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge. As you continue south we arrived at the Brooklyn Heights Promenade (aka the Esplanade). Here we got amazing views across East River of Lower Manhattan's skyline and the New York Harbor. This was filmed in April 2006, after the remains of the original World Trade Center Buildings was removed and prior to One World Trade Center and Freedom Tower had risen at the site.

How was the Brooklyn bridge was built in New York. Film continues to show how a tunnel was then built under the river. Film starts with views of the finished bridge. Diagrams show how the building was engineered. Problem 1 - How to build the foundations underwater. Pile driving. Foundation structures are pushed into the river. Maasonry structures of the towers being built. Problem 2 - How to hang a giant bridge span across the river. More diagrams demonstrate the building. A rope was tied to a pier and pulled across the river by boat. Attached to the opposite pier it was then pulled tight. Cables were hauled across one of one. Four cables each contained over 5,000 wires. Suspenders hung from the cables and the roadway built at the same time from both sides of the river to meet in the middle. Most of the footage is diagram format. Engineers working in a factory or laboratory, testing theories, experiments. Teaching young engineering students. A man works on a car engine. A glass door, name says Mechanical Engineer, S Mc Grath. Group of men sit around a table discussing plans. A construction site, two men stand at one corner discussing plans. A diagram indicates the educational path taken by an engineer. View of the Brooklyn Bridge with river traffic passing underneath. Repeat of footage of engineers meeting around a table. Cover of a report - proposed tunnel sites. Traffic congestion on the Brooklyn Bridge, means a tunnel is now required under the river. Pieces of paper list the steps taken in planning the tunnel - possible sites, funding, area improvement, tolls, geology, cost comparisons between another bridge, a tunnel or ferry services. Again Engineers pour over maps and plans around their meeting table. Using diagrams the engineering requirements of a 3,500 feet tunnel are explained. Shafts are sunk and tunnels driven. Actual footage of the shaft structures and digger buckets removing soil. A section of tunnel, showing concrete reinforcement girdles being positioned. Loading plates - the tunnel is lined with cast iron rings. Actual footage of these rings being moved on tracks and lowered down a lift shaft to the tunnel. Workers collect the load at the bottom of the lift. Problem 3 - How to build the tunnel so it won't collapse under the weight of water above. Men entering an air lock. Problem 4 - Making walls water tight. Worker attaching huge nuts and bolts in the tunnel and using an equally large spanner to tighten them. Joint are sealed. Rocks packed around the cast iron rings before being concreted to fill all gaps. View down the partially completed tunnel.

Much of New York City's history can be viewed via its bridges--all 18 that connect Manhattan Island to its neighbors. Join us for a look at these architectural masterpieces from the age of iron and steel; and, see how they have changed destinies, linking some to opportunity, others to ruin. New York's crossings date back to 1693, when its first bridge, known as the King's Bridge, was constructed over Spuyten Duyvil Creek between Manhattan and the Bronx, located in the present-day Kingsbridge neighborhood. The bridge, composed of stone abutments and a timber deck, was demolished in 1917. The oldest crossing still standing is High Bridge, built 1848 to carry the Croton Aqueduct from Manhattan to the Bronx over the Harlem River. This bridge was built to carry water to the city as part of the Croton Aqueduct system. Ten bridges and one tunnel serving the city have been awarded some level of landmark status. The Holland Tunnel was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1993 in recognition of its pioneering role as the first mechanically ventilated vehicular underwater tunnel, operating since 1927. The George Washington, High Bridge, Hell Gate, Queensboro, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Macombs Dam, Carroll Street, University Heights, and Washington bridges have all received landmark status, as well. New York features bridges of many lengths and types, carrying vehicular, bicycle, pedestrian, and subway traffic. The George Washington Bridge, spanning the Hudson River between New York City and Fort Lee, New Jersey, is the world's busiest bridge in terms of vehicular traffic. The George Washington, Verrazano-Narrows, and Brooklyn are noted for their architecture, while others are more well known for their functional importance, such as the Williamsburg Bridge with 8 vehicular lanes, 2 subway tracks, a bike lane, and pedestrian walkways. I walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan from the entrance at Cadman Plaza East in New York City at night. From Wikipedia: "The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City and is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States. Started in 1869 and completed fourteen years later in 1883, it connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. It has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and was the first steel-wire suspension bridge constructed. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge, a name coming from an earlier January 25, 1867, letter to the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and formally so named by the city government in 1915. Since opening, it has become an icon of New York City and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1972." Presented by Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC For more information go to http://s.sir.com/2arHLTE Brooklyn isn’t a city. It’s a metropolis of a borough. It’s also an idea. Its culture and urban sensibility have been exported to the point that Brooklynization is a phenomenon. Trendy restaurants, shops and businesses bearing the Brooklyn name--or one of its neighborhoods--appear in countries from Germany to Japan. And yet Brooklyn is very much a collection of communities, many with inviting green spaces and spectacular water views. Brooklyn real estate prices, whether pre-war, post-war or landmark, rival those across the East River in Manhattan. That doesn't surprise Brooklynites who never saw homes in the borough as a consolation prize. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former industrial areas where old factories and warehouses have been rehabbed into pricy condominiums and lofts. Dumbo is the acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. This territory, largely situated between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, is now an incubator for art and technology. It has managed to retain its gritty noir feel and industrial roots, which accounts for its starring role in countless films and photo shoots. Williamsburg has become synonymous with hipster culture--music, fashion and food. The low rents that initially attracted artists to these two enclaves of reinvention are a thing of the past. Classic “Brownstone Brooklyn” is found in neighborhoods like Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. Park Slope is a family-friendly community of shady blocks framed by a low-slung skyline that is adjacent to Prospect Park, the 585-acre green masterpiece designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, creators of New York’s Central Park. Brooklyn Heights is entirely a historic district--New York’s first, designated in 1965. The neighborhood is affluent, quiet and filled with architectural gems. One of its greatest treasures is the cantilevered Promenade that overlooks New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan as well as Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park, which opened in 2010, is a massive complex of athletic fields, food concessions, bike paths and pool with a full schedule of cultural events, entertainment and activities. From Brooklyn Heights, New York’s financial district is a quick zip on the subway. But that’s not the only way to access Manhattan. The favorite means is walking to it across iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Hello and welcome to another video tour of a neighborhood in New York City by New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com ). Today, we will be taking you on a tour of Dumbo, in Brooklyn, New York. This will be the first episode of our two-part series dedicated to this fantastic neighborhood. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=NewYorkHabitat&annotation_id=annotation_670785&feature=iv ) and do not hesitate to watch other great neighborhood video tours by New York Habitat, like these ones of SoHo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPflq6u9YWk ) and Union Square ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIUXvqrl-Mc ). The acronym "Dumbo" actually stands for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass". This wonderful neighborhood is indeed found between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. You can walk or cycle across either to get to Manhattan in as little as 10 minutes. If you do not feel like walking, you can catch the F or C train, which both stop in Dumbo, and the 2/3 train station to Times Square is a little farther away in Brooklyn Heights. To cross the Brooklyn Bridge on foot from Dumbo to Manhattan, head to Washington Street, and you will find the underpass that will lead you up a stairway and bring you up onto the Brooklyn Bridge pedestrian walkway. No other spot in the city can beat views from Dumbo! From the Fulton Ferry Landing, practically underneath the Brooklyn Bridge, you can see downtown Manhattan skyscrapers, such as the Woolworth Building, but also boats coming in and out the harbor. For all the gourmets out there, the River Café, is a waterfront Michelin-starred restaurant, where the food is as fine as the view. During the 19th century, the Fulton Ferry Landing was the busiest spot in Brooklyn. It was named after the boat that shuttled residents to Manhattan, which actually was the only way to cross the East River until the Brooklyn Bridge opened in 1883). The Brooklyn Bridge Park, which is found right next to the Fulton Ferry Landing opened in 2010 and is the first section of what will be an 85-acre waterfront park. It is kind of hard to believe that these piers were all covered with abandoned warehouses a few years ago. Moreover, in July and August, the Brooklyn Bridge Park transforms into an outdoor cinema. The Tobacco Warehouse and the Empire Stores were built in the 1870s to hold dry goods to be loaded onto ships. This place was a major hub of both shipping and manufacturing. In fact, lots of goods were produced here in the 19th century, from beer, to boxes, to soap, and Dumbo played such an important role in New York City commerce at the time, that it was designated a historic district in 2007. Do not forget that the best way to discover this amazing neighborhood and to experience its thrilling atmosphere is to rent an apartment in Dumbo with New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment.html ). Whether you are looking for a furnished apartment ( http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/furnished ) or a vacation rental ( http://www.nyhabitat.com/new-york-apartment/vacation ) in Dumbo or somewhere else in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Queens, you will always find the perfect place to call home away from home. Feel free to check out our blog, if you feel like learning more about New York City or Brooklyn. You will find many interesting articles, about New York" ( http://www.nyhabitat.com/blog/2011/06/16/video-tour-dumbo-in-brooklyn-new-york-part-1/ ). Thank you for joining us today. We hope you enjoyed the first part of our video tour of Dumbo, in Brooklyn, and look forward to your next stay in the Big Apple! If you have never walked across the Brooklyn Bridge you will hopefully enjoy this video. I recorded a number of clips and combined them into one, adding a narration afterwards describing what is seen in the video.

New York City has one of the best July 4th Fireworks displays in the country. This year, they moved it from the Hudson River back to the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Fireworks were launched from a barge in the river and also from the Brooklyn Bridge. This video was taken from the Two Bridges neighborhood of Manhattan on July 4, 2014. --- About PerfectLittlePlanet: I'm Brian and my wife is Isa. We live in New York. New York is home to over 2,000 bridges and tunnels. Several agencies manage this network of crossings, including the New York City Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, New York State Department of Transportation and Amtrak. Nearly all of the city's major bridges, and several of its tunnels, have broken or set records. The Holland Tunnel was the world's first vehicular tunnel when it opened in 1927. The Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, George Washington Bridge, and Verrazano--Narrows Bridge were the world's longest suspension bridges when opened in 1883.

Spent the day on my own traveling from Prospect Heights across the Brooklyn Bridge, and eventually made it to Chinatown on the hunt for some Chinese New Year celebrations. While there wasn't much going on, I did find some yummy dumplings at Nom Wah Tea Parlor and the best dessert ever at Eggloo! Hi there! My name is Jen and I am the founder and writer of World On A Whim, the Perfectionist's Guide to Spontaneous Travel. While my blog focuses on international travel, I am starting school in Los Angeles and will therefore not be able to travel abroad quite as much. Therefore, I decided to curate a "Day in LA" each week so that we can all enjoy our free time and have adventures in this glorious city. And of course I will share my travels outside of LA with you as well :) Join the Journey! http://worldonawhim.com follow what I'm up to: https://www.instagram.com/worldonawhi... https://twitter.com/worldonawhim https://www.facebook.com/worldonawhim Music Lakey Inspired: https://soundcloud.com/lakeyinspired
