As Uber's stranglehold over the taxi industry increases, some New York yellow cab dispatchers have found themselves in an unprecedented predicament: sitting on millions of dollars worth of medallion yellow cabs, but not enough drivers to drive them. Imagine seeing your retirement account balloon to $1.3 million and then crash to $140,000. That’s essentially what’s happened to thousands of New York City taxi drivers. Each NYC yellow taxi needs a medallion, which is like a license, in order to operate legally. Drivers can lease or buy them. New York City and state cap the total number of medallions, and there are less than 14,000 of them available today. For decades, that scarcity made medallions a seemingly safe investment. Cab drivers who saved up a 10 percent downpayment could finance a medallion through a credit union. As long as the medallions kept increasing in value, the drivers could build equity, which they could then use as collateral to buy a house or send their kids to college. Once they reached retirement age, they could lease the medallion to another driver for anywhere from $3,000 to $3,600 a month, or sell it and keep the profits. New York City periodically auctions off new medallions (the last one was in 2014), but most sales involve existing medallions. But medallions are worth only as much, or as a little, as buyers are willing to pay for them. And with the rise of Uber, Lyft, and other competitors that don’t require costly permits, many medallion owners are facing a a disturbing reality: medallion prices have plummeted in the past three years. VICE News met with three medallion owners to see how the crash in medallion prices is affecting their lives. Yellow taxis are as emblematic of New York as the Manhattan skyline, and one that has provided hundreds of thousands of immigrants with full-time, well-paying jobs. But the arrival of ride-hailing apps mean that cab driving has become an increasingly precarious occupation. The BBC's Joe Miller reports. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Why does NYC have yellow, green & black taxis? The answer is a mix of history, politics and economics. And emoji. || First video! Thanks for watching!! What should we learn about next? || Expand for more fascinating taxi stuff from my sources... - “Taxi! A Social History of the New York City Cab Driver” (awesome book) - Graham Hodges - - “2014 NYC Taxicab Factbook” - NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission - http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/about/statistics.shtml - 24 hours of taxi fares, visualized - http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/visualizing-a-day-in-the-life-of-a-new-york-city-cab/ - “NYC Taxi Viz” - Map at 2:58 - http://www.nyctaxiviz.com/for-riders.html - “Taxi Dreams” multimedia site - PBS - http://www.pbs.org/wnet/taxidreams/ FACT-CHECKING FINE PRINT: - Turns out the photo at 0:49 and 1:08 is of a taxi driver in DC... whelp, that's a little embarrassing. - The 35,000 figure for black cars lumps together 25K "For-Hire Vehicles" and 10K "Black Cars," two distinct TLC vehicle categories with different rules and regulations. I see them as generally interchangeable, at least for the purposes of this video. Whew.

https://democracynow.org - New York City taxi drivers held a vigil on Tuesday to honor livery car driver Douglas Schifter, who killed himself in front of City Hall Monday morning after writing a long Facebook post condemning local politicians and Wall Street-backed apps like Uber for pushing him into financial ruin. He wrote, “I worked 100-120 consecutive hours almost every week for the past fourteen plus years. When the industry started in 1981, I averaged 40-50 hours. I cannot survive any longer with working 120 hours! I am not a Slave and I refuse to be one. … There seems to be a strong bias by the Mayor and Governor in favor of Uber. A Company that is a known liar, cheat and thief.” Over the past five years, the number of for-hire cars has more than doubled in the city, largely thanks to Uber. But the soaring number of cars has resulted in a financial crisis for many longtime taxi drivers who now struggle to get customers. We speak to Bhairavi Desai, executive director and co-founder of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which represents over 19,000 taxi drivers in New York City. Watch more NYC Travel videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/1615-How-to-Take-a-Cab-in-New-York-City There's more to taking a taxi in New York City than hailing it down. You've got to know how to survive the ride. Step 1: Know where you’re going Before you hail a cab, get a rough idea of how far you’re going and how much it should cost. If you're not sure, ask a New Yorker. Most will be happy to help you avoid getting ripped off by an unscrupulous cabbie. Step 2: Step off the curb Step off the curb and face the oncoming traffic. Just don't step so far off the curb that you're standing in a lane of traffic. Step 3: Hail a cab Hail a cab by raising your arm when you spot one with its middle roof light on, indicating it’s available. If no lights are on, it’s occupied. If the outer lights are on, it’s off duty. If it’s a livery car or limo—and not a real yellow cab—it’s not supposed to stop, so don’t get in. Step 4: Avoid busy areas Don’t try to hail a cab just slightly in front of someone else with their arm out—it's rude. If you’re in an area where lots of people are trying to get cabs, walk a few blocks to a less competitive location. Tip New York cabs go off duty around 4:00 in the afternoon to change shifts, which makes finding a free one almost impossible. Try hailing an off-duty cab by indicating with your fingers that you’re only going a short distance—if the cabbie is going your way anyway, he might just take you. Step 5: Enter and exit on sidewalk Play it safe by always getting in—and out—of the cab on the same side as the sidewalk. Tip Only four passengers are allowed in a regular-sized taxi—unless the fifth passenger is under 7 and seated on someone’s lap. Step 6: Know your rights Know your rights. You have the right to tell the driver which route to take, you can ask him to slow down, and you are in control of the heat, AC, and radio. You are also entitled to be driven anywhere in the five boroughs. Tip If the driver says he doesn’t go outside Manhattan, politely contradict him and make a note of his medallion number—located on the window shield dividing the front seat from the rear—so you can report him if need be. Step 7: Buckle up Buckle up. Better safe then sorry. Step 8: Watch the meter Watch the meter. When you hop in the cab, the fare starts at $2.50. The meter will increase 40 cents every fifth of a mile (approximately four blocks) or, if you’re standing still or crawling along slowly, once every minute. There is no extra charge for luggage. Tip On weekdays from 4pm to 8pm, there’s an extra $1 surcharge. And every night after 8 p.m., there is a night surcharge of 50 cents. Step 9: Know airport fares Know your airport fares. LaGuardia is a regular metered fare, but you’re also responsible for any tolls along the way. If you’re going from JFK to Manhattan, or vice versa, there’s a flat fare of $45 plus tolls. If you’re heading to Newark airport, there is an extra $15 charge plus return tolls to New York City. Tip Note that New York City cabs can drop you at Newark airport, but because it’s out of state, they’re not legally allowed to pick up fares. Step 10: Pay the fare Pay the fare, and unless you had the worst ride of your life, add a nice tip: cab drivers work hard for the money. 10 to 20 percent tip is customary. Step 11: Get a receipt Always get the receipt. It has the taxi’s medallion number on it, which will come in handy if you accidentally leave something in the cab. And before you get out, take a last look around… inside and out. Did You Know? There are more than 10,000 yellow cabs servicing the city of New York.

40% of New York City medallions are owned by independent owner / drivers who support their families by driving full-time and following the rules. After auctioning these medallions for hundreds of thousands of dollars, the city has allowed Uber and other app-based services to run unruly and rampant throughout the city, decimating the value of the very same medallions the city sold to hardworking New Yorkers. Nissan NV200 taxi review - http://bit.ly/GJ0C7K Subscribe to our YouTube channel http://bit.ly/11Ad1j1 Subscribe to the mag http://subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk/yt In the world of Auto Express head-to-heads, this has to be the most bizarre. In this video review we pit the famous, tenth-generation Nissan Cedric, that's been around since 1973, against the new 2013 New York taxi, which is based on the Nissan NV200. Which is better, old or new? We find out in this video review. Inside the Cedric, it's like taking a trip to the Seventies. It's incredibly cosy and it boasts velour seating. In terms of space, it's not too bad getting in and out of, and headroom and knee room are good, too. The Cedric has a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine which is, it's best to say, well-proven. The Cedric is an automatic and, generally, very easy to drive. As it's Japanese, the wipers are on the left-hand side while the indicator is on the right. Take a step to 2013 and we're in the all-new New York cab. It's rather spacious and luxurious, with clean seats, a screen for adverts, somewhere to pay, air/con and a fantastic panoramic roof. What's it like to drive? Well, it feels very car-like, which is odd, as it's based on the Nissan NV200 van. The dashboard provides far more than what you're used to with Nissan, and there's even sat-nav. The New York taxi comes out on top in terms of steering. Unlike the Cedric, it feels a lot more responsive, and the ride quality is good, too. We really like the 2013 New York taxi. As we mentioned earlier, it's based on the NV200 van, and we're going to be seeing a lot more of that van in the UK because Nissan is going to be basing an all-new London taxi on the NV200. Watch the video review and see what you think.

SUBSCRIBE!!! https://www.youtube.com/c/chadcaruso?sub_confirmation=1 In this video I ask some New Yorkers which they prefer, Uber or Taxi. From the information I gathered, it seemed that more people chose Uber over a Taxi. A few people brought a an app called VIA which was spoke very highly of. Lyft was mentioned once or twice but didn't seem as popular as Uber. Not one person mentioned public transportation. Some of my favorite things about New York City are the openness of the people and the diversity. There is so much information to be soaked up as well as positive, interesting, and enriching interactions to be had. I hope you enjoy this documentation of that! The man known as New York’s taxi kingpin has won the latest round in his fight with Citibank (C). Taxi medallion owner Gene Friedman was sued by Citibank, which claimed Freidman had about $30 million in overdue loan payments for some of his medallions. A court ruled late last week that the bank could seize 89 of Friedman’s medallions, but an appeals court on Monday granted a temporary stay to the seizure. Freidman is CEO of Taxi Club Management, the largest privately held taxi company in the U.S. At issue in the case is the falling prices of taxi medallions not just in NY, but across the country, because of new services like Uber. But Freidman said he’s not threatened by Uber. ‘Uber’s not eating my lunch,’ said Freidman. ‘Uber is a photocopy it’s not a Xerox.’ Freidman added that while Uber has challenged him, ‘the service that I’m providing to my clients, who are the drivers, and to their clients, who are the passengers, is completely different and it’s better.’ Friedman owns hundreds of medallions and says he’s cash flow positive, thanks to a drop in expenses, which counters the decline in medallion prices.
