Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind the photoblog and #1 New York Times bestselling book Humans of New York has received the James Joyce Award from the UCD Literary & Historical Society at University College Dublin, Ireland. On setting out in the summer of 2010 to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map, Brandon says that he "thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of New York City's inhabitants". Since then, Humans of New York has evolved into a catalogue of photographs of NYC inhabitants alongside quotes and short stories Brandon collects while speaking with them. Today, Humans of New York has over 4.5 million followers on social media offering them a glimpse into the daily lives of strangers in New York City. "This award recognises Brandon's remarkable dedication and achievement in producing an expansive photographic record of the inhabitants of New York City. With over 6,000 portraits and narratives to date, and counting, Humans of New York lends its audience keen insights into this fascinating city and the way of life of its inhabitants," says Eoin MacLachlan, Auditor of the UCD Literary & Historical Society, University College Dublin. The James Joyce Award is named in honour of University College Dublin's best known graduate, James Joyce, the author of Ulysses, who himself was a leading light of the UCD Literary & Historical Society. Previous recipients of the UCD Literary & Historical Society James Joyce Award include: former White Stripes frontman, Jack White; the Beatle's music producer and arranger, the man known as the Fifth Beatle, Sir George Martin; Harry Potter author, JK Rowling; Satanic Verses author, Salman Rushdie; former Monty Python, Michael Palin; and The Who frontman and legendary rock star, Roger Daltrey. Famous New York Hoarder Faces Eviction SUBSCRIBE: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj A hoarder in Manhattan is running out of space - and time. Kevin McCrary has a 30-year build-up of junk in his rent-controlled $1400-per-month Upper East Side Apartment, but is now trying to save what he can after receiving a final notice of eviction from his landlord to move out by Friday March 14, 2014. Kevin's "collection" grew so large and blocked the main entrance to the abode that he was forced to enter his apartment by fire escape ladder. He also stores a surplus of trash in his van outside the building. Unemployed McCrary, 65, is the son of early radio personalities Tex McCrary and Jinx Falkenburg. The owners of the building made three failed attempts to previously evict him. New York Fashion Week has wrapped up with the usual glitz and glamour that makes it one of the world's premier industry events. However, some are worried that New York City could lose that status if officials go ahead with plans to relocate the city's iconic garment district from Manhattan to Brooklyn. During a short trip to New York I saw the opportunity to test out my new Panasonic GH5 and Panasonic-Leica kit lens. Being hugely inspired by editing techniques from Watchtower of Turkey, I came up with a concept to make a short but fast edit about life in New York city. The voice over in the beginning is the British philosopher Alan Watts, who wrote a lot about the ego and the human tendency to constantly find ways to give life meaning. The New York City Opera is hoping this season won't be singing a swan song, but the opera needs to raise $7 million by Monday or it will file for bankruptcy protection. NY1's Magee Hickey filed the following report. "Anna Nicole" is based on the life and death of tabloid star Anna Nicole Smith, and opera lovers are hoping that the co-production with the Brooklyn Academy of Music doesn't turn out to signal the death of the 70-year-old New York City opera institution. "They've been around for 70 years, so I hope that they will continue for another 70 years," said one person. "I think it's a real loss to the city if we have fewer opera companies, fewer arts programs, so I'm hoping that they can find a way. New York City Opera's board says it will have to cut short its season and file for bankruptcy protection if it can't raise $7 million by Monday. So far, the cash-strapped opera company has raised only $1.5 million, and it's Kickstarter campaign has yet to really take off. "We can't go forward without capital," said George Steel, the general manager and artistic director of the New York City Opera. We have to have money up front to try and move forward, and we're trying to raise $7 million this month. It's a very steep mountain to climb." New York City Opera was founded in 1943 and was called the people's opera by then-mayor Fiorello La Guardia. Its mission was to make opera accessible and affordable, and is known for featuring American themes, like "Anna Nicole," and American composers and great American opera singers, like Beverly Sills. "The New York City Opera is so great and wonderful," said one person. "They have such great shows. A lot of people come out to support them. So to hear that they have to raise $7 million by Monday is really sad." "It's poor administration. It's too late," said another. "It's a pity, because we're losing a great history and a great tradition." "It's sad, but I don't think there's any hope. Do you?" "Anna Nicole" is ending its run on Saturday. It could be the opera's final performance. So far, only a fraction of what is needed has been raised on Kickstarter. - See more at: http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/news/189586/new-york-city-opera-faces-uncertain-future#sthash.v69N8T06.dpuf

On Tuesday, disability rights advocates have filed two lawsuits against New York City's subways. According to the suits the city's subway system is inaccessible to disabled people, and its operator illegally discriminates against them by failing to fix the problems. According to the complaints, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has still resisted demands to upgrade the system. Tuesday's lawsuits were filed by Disability Rights Advocates on behalf of several nonprofit groups and three individuals. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/yVwCs0MipJk/us-new-york-subway-lawsuits-idUSKBN17R21W http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

By WKBW News By Rachel Elzufon November 1, 2012 Updated Nov 1, 2012 at 10:23 PM EST The City of Niagara Falls faces their "worst-case" budget head-on. Mayor Paul Dyster (D) presented his bleak 2013 budget forecast to the city council just a few hours ago. Dyster told council members they would have to cut into the meat and bones of the city, thanks to a several million dollar budget deficit. The budget proposal comes a month late. Dyster says by taking so long to fine-tune the numbers, "as unpalatable as some of the measures presented here may seem, the overall package is far better and less painful product that what we started with in late summer and early fall." First to go -- nearly two dozen jobs. Dyster cut 27.5 positions, 18.5 of which are filled -- including part-time employees. The final number -- 20 people laid off. The layoffs came from street and sanitation workers as well as employees at the Department of Public Works and City Hall. To top it off, the city will not be hiring dozens of seasonal and temp employees -- including lifeguards and people for recreational programs. Firefighters and police officers will keep their jobs. However, Council Member Charles Walker (D) tells Eyewitness News the council does not want to see anyone let go, saying "In talking with my colleagues we're determined to present a final budget that wouldn't have layoffs." Dyster is also pitching at 8.3-percent tax hike for homeowners, bringing $2.7 million into the city. However, Walker says that may not be possible due to a tax cap in the state. The deep cuts all go back to an ongoing dispute between the Seneca Nation and New York State, leaving $60 million short in casino revenue. Dyster calls this delay a "catastrophe" for the city, but vowed to get that money back.
