These three places, however, don’t even get on the top 20 places to actually live, in this year’s Quality of Living Index, a yearly list compiled by HR firm, Mercer. Apparently, if you want to live the good life, you should move to Vienna, Austria, Zurich, Switzerland, or Auckland, New Zealand. The top twenty list doesn’t include any cities from the UK or the USA, two countries that have arguably been the two heavyweights in the last century regarding power and wealth. These two countries, however, contain cities that attract millions of overseas visitors every year. Today we are going to compare them, in this episode of the Infographics Show, New York City vs London. Little India - Jackson Heights, Queens, NY (74th Street)

05:09
Little India June 2016. Walking around Jackson 74th Street ✔ Watch my other "Jackson Heights" video here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp_ZLjQ08Mg "Jackson Heights in Queens epitomizes the city’s most ethnically diverse county when judging by the countless cultural distinctions of its residents. Though the neighborhood has a large population of South Americans and East Asians, it is the concentration of South Asians who comprise the majority. Here, the heap of Indians, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis have founded a home of their own. To those paying attention, Jackson Heights will prove an authentic slice of South Asia in New York City’s largest borough. Jackson Heights is situated in the northwestern portion of Queens. It is bordered by nearby LaGuardia Airport to the north at Grand Central Parkway and Elmhurst to the south at Roosevelt Avenue. To its west is Woodside, cut off by the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and at its east you’ll find East Elmhurst drawn mainly by Junction Boulevard. Despite Jackson Heights’ large size, the E, F, M, R and the number 7 Subway lines serve the area at its southernmost border only running along Roosevelt Avenue, while the Long Island Railroad stops in nearby Woodside. Still, the neighborhood is among the most walkable." Thanks for watching. Please like & Subscribe 😉

If you’ve been on a subway lately, you know that New York City’s infrastructure is already beyond capacity. And guess what — the population is expected to rise from about 8.2 million to 9 million by 2040. With that in mind, Crain’s asked 12 architecture, design and real estate firms to conjure some big ideas to deal with the projected crunch. Their responses ranged from SLCE Architects suggestion of adding multi-use buildings to underused schoolyards, to Dattner Architects proposal to convert waste-transfer stations into eco-friendly fuel producers.

New York’s Latino landscape has changed, with Dominicans outnumbering Puerto Ricans in the city, according to a new study. A decline in Puerto Ricans plus a rise in people from the Dominican Republic has led to the population shift that could impact the cultural and political scene, said City University researchers. 12,000 dominicans are arriving each year in NYC. ...https://laopinion.com/2017/04/20/cual-es-el-grupo-latino-mas-numeroso-en-nueva-york/

Experts bring peregrine falcon population back from brink in NYC

02:16
Experts are helping a once-endangered species make a comeback around New York City by finding the animals a place to live high atop our local bridges. For years, the Port Authority has helped make the tops of some of its bridges attractive homes for nesting falcons. After three decades of work, research scientist Chris Naderiski has watched the endangered peregrine falcon population in New York City go from just one pair to becoming the largest peregrine falcon population in the world. Economy Before the completion of One World Trade Center, Lower Manhattan was the fourth largest business district in the United States, after Midtown Manhattan, the Chicago Loop, and Washington, D.C.; Lower Manhattan is now the third largest central business district in the U.S. Anchored by Wall Street, New York City functions as the financial capital of the world and has been called the world's most economically powerful city. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers, and also includes several small adjacent islands and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood on the U.S. mainland. Manhattan is often described as the cultural and financial capital of the world and hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough. It is historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626, for 60 guilders or about $24 in 1626 and US$1050 today. Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013; residential property sale prices in Manhattan typically exceeded US$1,400 per square foot ($15,000/m2) as of 2016. Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan have become well known, as New York City received a record of nearly 60 million tourists in 2015, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many world-renowned bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building, one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world; and parks, such as Central Park. There are many historically significant places in Manhattan: Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, and the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. The City of New York was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan, and the borough houses New York City Hall, the seat of the City's Government. Numerous colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan New York City The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. Driving Downtown - Bronx 4K - New York City USA

Driving Downtown - Bronx New York City New York USA - Episode 40. Starting Point: https://goo.gl/maps/8gNbo8irtR82 . The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City, within the U.S. state of New York. The Bronx contains one of the five poorest Congressional Districts in the United States, the 15th, but its wide diversity also includes affluent, upper-income and middle-income neighborhoods such as Riverdale, Fieldston, Spuyten Duyvil, Schuylerville, Pelham Bay, Pelham Gardens, Morris Park and Country Club.[10][11] The Bronx, particularly the South Bronx, saw a sharp decline in population, livable housing, and the quality of life in the late 1960s and the 1970s, culminating in a wave of arson. Since then the communities have shown significant redevelopment starting in the late 1980s before picking up pace from the 1990s until today. About a quarter of the Bronx's area is open space,[5] including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo in the borough's north and center. These open spaces are situated primarily on land deliberately reserved in the late 19th century as urban development progressed north and east from Manhattan. The name "Bronx" originated with Jonas Bronck, who established the first settlement in the area as part of the New Netherland colony in 1639.[6][7][8] The native Lenape were displaced after 1643 by settlers. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Bronx received many immigrant groups as it was transformed into an urban community, first from various European countries (particularly Ireland, Germany and Italy) and later from the Caribbean region (particularly Puerto Rico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic), as well as African American migrants from the southern United States.[9] This cultural mix has made the Bronx a wellspring of both Latin music and hip hop. Revitalization In 1997, the Bronx was designated an All America City by the National Civic League, acknowledging its comeback from the decline of the mid-century.[65] In 2006, The New York Times reported that "construction cranes have become the borough's new visual metaphor, replacing the window decals of the 1980s in which pictures of potted plants and drawn curtains were placed in the windows of abandoned buildings."[66] The borough has experienced substantial new building construction since 2002. Between 2002 and June 2007, 33,687 new units of housing were built or were under way and $4.8 billion has been invested in new housing. In the first six months of 2007 alone total investment in new residential development was $965 million and 5,187 residential units were scheduled to be completed. Much of the new development is springing up in formerly vacant lots across the South Bronx.[67] Sports The Bronx is the home of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bronx https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g47369-Activities-Bronx_New_York.html http://www.nycgo.com/boroughs-neighborhoods/the-bronx

NEW YORK CITY 1930s TRAVELOGUE "WONDER CITY POPULATION 7 MILLION" 54654

14:53
Empasco Pictures presents “New York The Wonder City,” a 1930s-era black-and-white silent film that opens with images of the city taken from water and a blimp takes the viewer sightseeing starting at mark 00:48. Mark 01:12 takes us to Broadway, “the longest street in the world,” that shows us “domes of commerce above the narrow streets” (as explained via title cards). We see scenes of bridges connecting buildings high above the busy streets, including Broad Street, as the camera pans up building sides and flashes on the New York Stock Exchange (mark 02:27). Trinity Church at Wall Street and Broadway is presented starting at mark 02:50, followed by shots of City Hall, the Woolworth Building, and Brooklyn Bridge (mark 03:58) looking toward Manhattan Bridge. Fishermen unload mackerel at Fulton Fish Market (mark 04:20) followed by additional views of skyscrapers and a look at the Lower East Side (which a title card identifies as “the Ghetto” at mark 06:02) as merchants wheel pushcarts full of merchandise down the streets and laundry hangs from clotheslines strung between buildings. This is followed by a visit to the Bowery (mark 07:05) where rooms at the Palma House are advertised for 40 cents a night and a restaurant advertises menu items ranging from a nickel to 25 cents. “Modern” express highways are captured starting at mark 07:53 while “local traffic” is confined to street traffic. By mark 08:33 we see various views of the 102-story Empire State Building, followed by the Chrysler Building and the Great White Way where Joan Crawford’s 1932 film “Rain” is advertised at the Rivoli Theater. We visit ritzy Park Avenue and the Waldorf Astoria Hotel before stopping at Central Park (mark 10:45) where equestrians head out for a ride. Why did the Dutch give up New York?

05:44
New York is one of the most influential cities in the world; economically, culturally and diplomatically it is a powerhouse. It’s population also largely speaks English, a legacy America has from it’s past as a British colony. But the English were not the first Europeans to settle New York. Before St Georges Cross was hoisted over New York; the Dutch flag flew over New Amsterdam – these places being one and the same. So how did the Dutch come to colonise here and how did the English manage to steal this jewel away from them? Rich Parents In New York City Are Mad Their Schools Are Trying To Desegregate (HBO)

03:41
Though New York prides itself on being an open-minded and diverse city, it has one of the most racially segregated public school system in the nation. And at a time when schools from Arizona to Tennessee and New Jersey are all debating ways to better integrate students, New York’s continued inequities stand out. The city’s elite public schools are overrepresented by wealthier, white and Asian children despite the fact that 67 percent of the public school population are black and latino. This summer, there's momentum behind a range of proposals to address segregation by changing admissions policies at the middle school and high school levels. Mayor Bill de Blasio, New York City Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza, and other educational leaders say the goal is to uphold their mission and to create opportunity for students who have long been shut out. But not everyone is enthusiastic about change. In one district, a grassroots plan to reserve 25 percent of seats in every middle school for struggling students has angered the parents of high-performing, well-resourced children. VICE News met with Kim Watkins, the chair of the Community Education Council for District 3, which is comprised of sixteen middle schools spread across the more affluent parts of the Upper West Side and black, brown, and poorer sections of southern Harlem. In the district's best schools, fewer than 10 percent of students are from low-income families. At its worst schools, almost 100 percent of the students are poor and of color. For some New Yorkers embracing initiatives for diversity and equal opportunity is easy to do in theory, harder to do in practice.
