Driving Downtown Streets - Main Street - Buffalo New York USA - Episode 74. Starting Point: https://goo.gl/maps/LRy8KCabN4o . Buffalo is a city in Western New York and the seat of Erie County, on the eastern shores of Lake Erie at the head of the Niagara River. As of 2014, Buffalo is the state's second most populous city after New York City with 258,703 residents, and with a population of 1.13 million, the metropolitan area is the 50th largest in the United States. Buffalo grew significantly in the 19th and 20th centuries as a result of the Erie Canal, railroads and Lake Erie, providing an abundance of fresh water and an ample trade route to the Midwestern United States, while grooming its economy for the grain, steel and automobile industries during the 20th century. After an economic downturn in the latter half of the 20th century, Buffalo's economy has transitioned to sectors that include financial services, technology, biomedical and education. Residents of Buffalo are called "Buffalonians". The city's nicknames include "The Queen City", "The Nickel City", and "The City of Good Neighbors". Economy Buffalo's economic sectors include industrial, light manufacturing, high technology and services. The State of New York, with over 15,000 employees, is the city's largest employer. Other major employers include the United States government, Kaleida Health, M&T Bank, the University at Buffalo, General Motors, Time Warner Cable, and Tops Friendly Markets. In banking, Buffalo is the headquarters of M&T Bank and First Niagara Bank. Buffalo is home to Rich Products, Canadian brewer Labatt, cheese company Sorrento Lactalis, Delaware North Companies and New Era Cap Company. The loss of traditional jobs in manufacturing, rapid suburbanization and high labor costs have led to economic decline and made Buffalo one of the poorest U.S. cities with populations of more than 250,000 people. An estimated 28.7–29.9% of Buffalo residents live below the poverty line, behind either only Detroit, or only Detroit and Cleveland. Buffalo's median household income of $27,850 is third-lowest among large cities, behind only Miami and Cleveland; however the metropolitan area's median household income is $57,000. This, in part, has led to the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metropolitan area having the most affordable housing market in the U.S. The quarterly NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index (HOI) noted nearly 90% of the new and existing homes sold in the metropolitan area during the second quarter were affordable to families making the area's median income of $57,000. As of 2014, the median home price in the city was $95,000. Buffalo's economy has begun to see significant improvements since the early 2010s. Money from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo through a program known locally as "Buffalo Billion" has brought new construction, increased economic development, and hundreds of new jobs to the area. As of March 2015, Buffalo's unemployment rate was 5.9%, slightly above the national average of 5.5%. In 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis valued the Buffalo area's economy at $54.9 billion. Sports Buffalo and the surrounding region is home to two major league professional sports teams. The NHL's Buffalo Sabres play in the City of Buffalo, and the NFL's Buffalo Bills play in suburban Orchard Park, New York. Buffalo is also home to several minor sports teams, including the Buffalo Bisons (baseball; an affiliate of the MLB's Toronto Blue Jays), Buffalo Bandits (indoor lacrosse) and FC Buffalo (soccer) as well as a professional women's team the Buffalo Beauts (Hockey). The Buffalo Bulls are a Division I college team representing the State University of New York at Buffalo, and several other Buffalo-area colleges and universities are also active in college athletics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo,_New_York https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g60974-Activities-Buffalo_New_York.html http://www.visitbuffaloniagara.com/ https://www.facebook.com/places/Things-to-do-in-Buffalo-New-York/109324835754083/

Buffalo: 10th dangerous city in America Forbes Magazine puts Queen City in top 10 on list Updated: Monday, 22 Oct 2012, 5:58 PM EDT Published : Monday, 22 Oct 2012, 4:50 PM EDT Luke Moretti Posted by: Eli George BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - When it comes to crime, the Queen City is among some of the most volatile urban areas in the United States, according to Forbes. Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda has a message for people living in and visiting the City of Good Neighbors: "I want them to know that Buffalo is a safe city. They should come down, enjoy themselves, and feel safe," he assured. On Forbes Magazine's list of America's most dangerous cities, Buffalo ranked 10th. Detroit was first. MORE | See the full list from Forbes here "The perception is not good," Derenda acknowledged. "But the reality is violence in the City of Buffalo is down." The city's top cop says last year, homicides were at a 10-year low, and he points to a 17 percent drop in violent crime since 2005. Common Council President Richard Fontana said, "I have no idea why Chicago's not in the top 10 with over 400 murders. But they must be using some statistics that really don't reflect the reality on the street." Forbes ranked U.S. cities with a population over 200,000 according to their violent crime rate. Though top officials question the statistic, resident Pamela Miszko says she's not surprised by Buffalo's ranking. "There's a lot of crime around here, and instead of giving tickets to people, go where the crime is," Miszko said. And Melinda Morlock thinks patrols could be better utilized. "They're not where they should be," she contends. "Where I think, and I come down. I used to come down a lot more. But they're not where the dangerous hot spots are." But Murray Holman, Executive Director of the Stop the Violence Coalition, doesn't think high ranking reflects the reality on the streets. "I don't see it. I don't see the numbers like that. We do tremendous work in the city. For us to be number 10, they got to be getting their numbers wrong some kind of way," Holman said. Copyright WIVB.com

An American Classic: Traversing 460 miles of scenic New York state, the Amtrak Empire Limited operates daily between Niagara Falls and New York City. Making 16 stops, the Empire Limited is a premier way to see the beauty of upstate New York, the Hudson valley and New York City by rail. Arriving in Depew-Buffalo at 5:00 on December 28th 2010 the train begins its lengthy journey. Led by Amtrak 717, the train makes good time through small towns and larger towns of upstate New York on a cold wintery morning. Enroute to Albany, where a train change was made you will see small mountains, old railroading towns, passing trains, bridges and much more. At Albany a train change is made. After waiting nearly 2 hours the next train departs for NYC. In the midst of post Christmas chaos and a battering snow storm, the cars of the train were all backwards, making a rather interesting ride. Along the Albany-NYC section you will see the beautiful Hudson valley unfold, small cottage towns, and the arrival into Penn Station. Travelling by rail harkens back to a much more simple era, accompanying this video is music that is definitive of the 1930's including Glen Millers 'In The Mood' and Al Jolsons'Im Sitting On Top Of The World'. A beautiful, romantic and powerful era, this video touches on the elegance of those bygone days. As the steel rails wind into a mecca of civilization we have arrived in the greatest city in the world, New York City! [Watch in HD for the best viewing experience] LRF Video Productions

January 29, 2013 Residents of Erie County, New York overflow the State's dictating / Q & A forum concerning the unconstitutional NY Safe Act arms bill. The passion and anger from the people is evident of Erie County resistance. After the first speaker spoke, the second one was introduced. A request from an audience member to recite the Pledge of Allegiance was ignored by the State. So the people took over and assertively recited it anyway. The State attempted to have private interviews with the media which alienated the crowd further, who then demanded transparency. Then the State wanted the questions from the audience to be private, which riled folks even more. Questions asked by Western New Yorkers covered: non-compliance, penalties, jury nullification, 2nd Amendment profiling into domestic terrorists, government tyranny, police, sheriff, and more. Other topics, and especially on the people forming militias was missed due to full camera memory. Welcome to blue collar Buffalo. * * * Clarence, NY (WKBW) - A question and answer session on New York's new gun law turned testy, as gun owners unleash a fury of anger on the new legislation. Frustration boiled over for people who feel as though they are law abiding citizens, being turned into criminals. For many, it was a chance to vent anger at Albany. One WNYer even said "You put a brown shirt on Mr. Cuomo and put him on television, he would look just like Hitler." Another chimed in, "Angry people get together, they form militias folks. This country, this WNY is prime for something like that!" Western New York gun owners say they SAFE Act and its ban on assault weapons makes no sense. One of the big concerns -- who is footing the bill for making changes to guns that are now considered assault weapons. State officials told the crowd the gun owners are the ones responsible. People in the crowd also had a lot of questions about the registration laws. One gun owner asked,"What is the penalty if you don't register it? 'Cause I guarantee there's a lot of people that aren't going to." At times, advocates felt answers were incomplete or political. http://www.wkbw.com/news/local/Firey-Meeting-About-NY-SAFE-Act-18892719 1.html
