Economy Before the completion of One World Trade Center, Lower Manhattan was the fourth largest business district in the United States, after Midtown Manhattan, the Chicago Loop, and Washington, D.C.; Lower Manhattan is now the third largest central business district in the U.S. Anchored by Wall Street, New York City functions as the financial capital of the world and has been called the world's most economically powerful city. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers, and also includes several small adjacent islands and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood on the U.S. mainland. Manhattan is often described as the cultural and financial capital of the world and hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough. It is historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626, for 60 guilders or about $24 in 1626 and US$1050 today. Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013; residential property sale prices in Manhattan typically exceeded US$1,400 per square foot ($15,000/m2) as of 2016. Many districts and landmarks in Manhattan have become well known, as New York City received a record of nearly 60 million tourists in 2015, and Manhattan hosts three of the world's 10 most-visited tourist attractions in 2013: Times Square, Central Park, and Grand Central Terminal. The borough hosts many world-renowned bridges, such as the Brooklyn Bridge; skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building, one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world; and parks, such as Central Park. There are many historically significant places in Manhattan: Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, and the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village is considered the birthplace of the modern gay rights movement. The City of New York was founded at the southern tip of Manhattan, and the borough houses New York City Hall, the seat of the City's Government. Numerous colleges and universities are located in Manhattan, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan New York City The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. Top 10 Favorite Travel Channels on Youtube (1 of 10): Longtime fan and highly recommend Ricks many years of travel videos! - Rick Steves - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCchgIh8Tc4sTmBfnMQ5pDdg Driving Downtown Streets - Park Avenue - New York City New York USA - Episode 1. Starting Point: Park Avenue - https://goo.gl/maps/56FKLZWstj12 . Park Avenue is a wide New York City boulevard[4] which carries north and southbound traffic in the borough of Manhattan, and is also a wide one-way pair in the Bronx. For most of the road's length in Manhattan, it runs parallel to Madison Avenue to the west and Lexington Avenue to the east. Park Avenue's entire length was formerly called Fourth Avenue; the title still applies below 14th Street.[5] Meanwhile, the section between 14th and 17th Street is called Union Square East, and between 17th and 32nd Streets, the name Park Avenue South is used. In the Bronx, Park Avenue runs in several segments between the Major Deegan Expressway and Fordham Road.[6] Route The road that becomes Park Avenue originates as the Bowery. From Cooper Square at 8th Street to Union Square at 14th Street, it is known as Fourth Avenue, a 70-foot-wide (21 m) road carrying northbound traffic. At 14th Street, it turns slightly northeast to align with other avenues drawn up in the Commissioners' Plan of 1811. From 14th Street to 17th Street, it forms the eastern boundary of Union Square and is known as Union Square East; its southbound lanes merge with Broadway south of 15th Street, and the thoroughfare divides into two distinct portions in the one-block section between 14th and 15th Streets. From 17th Street to 32nd Street, it is known as Park Avenue South. Above 32nd Street, for the remainder of its distance, it is known as Park Avenue, a 140-foot-wide boulevard. In popular culture Will Smith, as a policeman, pursues a criminal by jumping off the Park Avenue Viaduct in the 1997 film Men in Black. In the 2007 film I Am Legend, Will Smith again appears on the Park Avenue Viaduct, where his character is captured by a vampire's snare. In the 2012 film The Avengers, the climax takes place on the Park Avenue Viaduct. On the TV series The Odd Couple, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison live at 1049 Park Avenue. On the TV series Diff'rent Strokes, Phillip Drummond, with his daughter, Kimberly and adopted sons, Willis and Arnold Jackson live at 697 Park Avenue. The PBS documentary Park Avenue: Money, Power and the American Dream sheds light on gap between the impoverished people living on Park Avenue in the South Bronx and the extremely wealthy living at 740 Park Avenue in Manhattan. In the song "Youth Gone Wild" by American band Skid Row, Park Avenue is mentioned in the lyrics: "I said 'Hey man, there's something that you oughta know. / I tell ya Park Avenue leads to Skid Row.'" The stage and film musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying takes place in the fictional "Park Avenue office building of World Wide Wicket Company, Inc." The street lent its name to the Buick Park Avenue, a large luxury sedan that was produced from 1977 to 2005.[citation needed] In the intro to the late 1960s - early 1970s TV show Green Acres, Zsa Zsa Gabor's character sings "Darling I love but give me Park Avenue!", where she lived before moving to rural Hooterville with her husband, the lawyer-turned-farmer.[18] The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States.[9] Located at the southern tip of the State of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world.[10][11] A global power city,[12] New York City exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace[13] defining the term New York minute.[14] Home to the headquarters of the United Nations,[15] New York is an important center for international diplomacy[16] and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Avenue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g60763-Activities-New_York_City_New_York.html http://www.nycgo.com/ http://www.businessinsider.com/view-from-top-of-432-park-avenue-2014-10

Driving Downtown - New York City New York USA - Episode 54. Starting Point: Park Avenue https://goo.gl/maps/6LEJanN49HR2 . The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world, with an estimated 20.3 million people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23.7 million residents in its Combined Statistical Area. A global power city, New York City has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, and sports. The city's fast pace defines the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy. Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States, the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world. In 2013, the tri-state New York Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.4 trillion. If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world. New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability, and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity. Many districts and landmarks in New York City are well known, and the city received a record 61 million tourists in 2016, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's "heart" and its "Crossroads", is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 472 stations in operation. Over 120 colleges and universities are located in New York City, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top universities in the world. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City

The New York City Subway in Manhattan

12:53
This film shows some impressions of the New York City subway in Manhattan. The NYC subway system is really old and the infrastructure shows a lot of wear and tear; especially the stations are in pretty rough shape. The system is quite efficient, though. Many lines have four tracks, where the inner two tracks are used by express services, which only stop at major (interchange) stations. The platform layout at these stations allows for convenient transfer between express and local services. This film was shot on a Saturday afternoon. Curiously, there seemed to be significantly less frequent service than during weekdays, with some lines even not operating at all. Some stations were quite deserted while others (especially those along the Lexington Avenue line) were overcrowded. Enjoy! Index to the film: 00:00 – 47–50 Streets / Rockefeller Center 01:20 – West 4th Street / Washington Square 02:23 – Spring Street (note the express service passing the station at 4:05) 04:26 – Canal Street 05:31 – Riding an R160 class train on the E line from Canal Street to World Trade Center 07:04 – World Trade Center station 07:33 – A brief view of the 9/11 memorial and the new 1 World Trade Center building 08:17 – Fulton Street (platform for J and Z lines; quite deserted this day) 08:38 – Brooklyn Bridge / City Hall 10:34 – Grand Central / 42nd Street 11:15 – 68th Street / Hunter College

New York City in 1993 in HD - DTheater DVHS Demo Tape

05:33
Captured from a D-Theater HD DVHS Demo Tape by http://www.techmoan.com/ Posted here (on my supplementary channel) as it has a copyright claim on the soundtrack. If you want to subscribe - the main Techmoan channel is https://www.youtube.com/Techmoan The full Retro-Tech D-VHS video is here: https://youtu.be/jiu0LPeLQPE In 2002 D-Theater launched in the US - the dealers needed a demo tape of HD footage. JVC reused some HD video that had been shot as a demo for the Japanese HD market back in 1993. This footage would have most likely been originally used for a HiVision MUSE demo (an HD Broadcast, Tape & Laserdisc format). You can determine that the year is 1993 by the adverts in Times Square - The Radio 501 CD that's advertised on a billboard came out in 1993 and Paper Moon is playing at the Marquis Theater. For those wondering what HD video camera tech existed in 1993 - there are a few options, but it's likely that this footage was shot with a HDVS camera- perhaps a Sony SONY HDC-500 attached to a HDV-10 portable recorder which recorded on UniHi 3/4" tape. Driving Downtown - Broadway 4K New York City - USA

37:07
Driving Downtown Streets - Broadway - New York City New York USA Starting Point: Broadway https://goo.gl/maps/kVBQ1T3BKDv With over 1.4 billion dollars in ticket sales to 13 million attendees, the Broadway theatre district is a major tourist attraction in New York City. Broadway in Manhattan is known widely as the heart of the American theatre industry, and is used as a metonym for it. Broadway the road is the oldest north–south main road in New York City, dating to the first New Amsterdam settlement. _________________________ Subscribe: goo.gl/cEg68a Facebook: https://facebook.com/J-Utah-1438547536464112 Instagram: https://instagram.com/utahj199 Twitter: https://twitter.com/utahj199 Google+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/117782952856604692611 _________________________ One famous stretch near Times Square, where Broadway crosses Seventh Avenue in midtown Manhattan, is the home of many Broadway theatres, housing an ever-changing array of commercial, large-scale plays, particularly musicals. This area of Manhattan is often called the Theater District or the Great White Way, a nickname originating in the headline "Found on the Great White Way" in the edition of February 3, 1902 of the New York Evening Telegram. The journalistic nickname was inspired by the millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements that illuminate the area. After becoming the city's de facto red-light district in the 1960s and 1970s (as can be seen in the films Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy), since the late 1980s Times Square has emerged as a family tourist center, in effect being Disneyfied following the company's purchase and renovation of the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street in 1993. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_(Manhattan) Broadway theatre, commonly known as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres with 500 or more seats located in the Theater District and Lincoln Center along Broadway, in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. Along with London's West End theatre, Broadway theatre is widely considered to represent the highest level of commercial theatre in the English-speaking world. The Theater District is a popular tourist attraction in New York City. According to The Broadway League, for the 2016–2017 season (which ended May 21, 2017), total attendance was 13,270,343 and Broadway shows had US$1,449,399,149 in grosses, with attendance down 0.4%, grosses up 5.5%, and playing weeks down 4.1%. The great majority of Broadway shows are musicals. Historian Martin Shefter argues, "'Broadway musicals,' culminating in the productions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, became enormously influential forms of American popular culture" and helped make New York City the cultural capital of the nation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadway_theatre Midtown Manhattan, or Midtown, represents the central lengthwise portion of the borough and island of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and the headquarters of the United Nations, and it contains world-renowned commercial zones such as Rockefeller Center, Broadway, and Times Square. Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most expensive and intensely used pieces of real estate in the world, and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commands the world's highest retail rents, at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017. While Lower Manhattan is the main financial center, Midtown is the country's largest commercial, entertainment, and media center. It is also a growing financial center, second in importance only to Lower Manhattan's Financial District in the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midtown_Manhattan With a record 61 million tourists in 2016, Manhattan is often described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world and the borough hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, New York County is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with a census-estimated 2016 population of 1,643,734 living in a land area of 22.83 square miles (59.13 km2), or 71,999 residents per square mile (27,799/km2), higher than the density of any individual U.S. city. On business days, the influx of commuters increases this number to over 3.9 million, or more than 170,000 people per square mile (65,600/km2). Manhattan has the third-largest population of New York City's five boroughs, after Brooklyn and Queens, and is the smallest borough in terms of land area. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan

What Can $10 Get You in NEW YORK CITY?

01:09
You won’t believe how far I stretched $10 in New York City! Everyone thought I was joking when I said I was gonna make this video… They told me I could only buy half a beer -- but I managed to get so much more than that! It is absolutely true that New York City is one of the world's most expensive, but it can be done on a budget (challenging, but doable!) In this video, find out how many things I could buy for $10USD. What else would you buy in NYC? Please Note that this video is about a year old (I am reposting the entire '$10 series' as I only shared it on FB and not YT). As you'll notice, the editing is not great and it moves way too fast, but I still wanted to share it with you anyways. As always, thanks for watching my videos! UNDERCITY New York City urban exploration w STEVE DUNCAN, dir. Andrew Wonder

27:55
This is a film I made after some adventures underground with Steve Duncan (undercity.org) last summer. We also have a teaser video which you can watch on my vimeo page (vimeo.com/5752275). Steve and I just completed another underground expedition with Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erling_Kagge). It was featured in a three page article on the front page of the NY Times metro section and was written by Alan Feuer (nytimes.com/2011/01/02/nyregion/02underground.html). We were also covered by NPR's Jacki Lyden who's report will be aired on 1/2/11 and posted on NPR's site. Shot on a canon 5d mkii with canon 24 f/1.4 (version 1) with the zacuto rapid fire, Zoom H4N and a sennheiser g2 wireless lav. The zacuto was really great at being there when I needed it but also staying out of the way. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

Oldest footage of New York City ever

08:29
The oldest and most incredible footage of New York City ever, including where the WTC would be built. With added maps carefully researched to show where the camera was. 28 shots of classic footage with a new twist and a new soundtrack. For more videos see: http://www.yestervid.com http://www.youtube.com/yestervid http://www.facebook.com/yestervid This collection of footage was taken between 1896 and 1905 and shows various places around New York City, all identifiable by location on a map. In order they are: 1. Panorama from Times Building, New York - W. 42nd Street and 7th Avenue, up 6th Ave ending at Times Square 2. Interior N.Y. Subway, 14th St. to 42nd St. ending at the Old Grand Central Station 3. Opening of New East River Bridge, New York - Williamsburg Bridge, on the East River 4. 'Move On' - A fruit market somewhere on the lower East Side 5. At the Foot of The Flatiron, or Fuller Building on Broadway and 23rd Street, on the Broadway side near the narrow north corner. 6. Parade of "Exempt" Firemen - Washington Square Park (Greenwich Village) showing Washington Square Arch 7. Panorama of Blackwell's Island, N.Y. - Heading along the eastern shore of Blackwell's Island, known today as Roosevelt Island. Shows Lighthouse Park and the construction of the Queensboro Bridge over Roosevelt Island, with Manhattan in the far background. 8. Skyscrapers of New York City, from the North River - On the Hudson River, looking toward the piers of Lower Manhattan. Shows approximately where the World Trade Center would be located many years later. 9. Old site of the New York Aquarium (which moved to Coney Island in 1957) and Battery Park. 10. Panorama of Flatiron Building - Looking south from Madison Square across Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street 11. Parade of Horses on Speedway - on the West Bank of the Harlem River, Highbridge in North Manhattan. Taken from Harlem River Drive, the footage shows the old High Bridge at 175th Street and the Washington Bridge at 181st Street 12. Lower Broadway - Looking north up Lower Broadway from Wall Street, at the Trinity Churchyard Cemetery 13. Looking along the length of 23rd Street, with the elevated EI in the background. 14. Time-lapse demolition of the Star Theatre on 13th Street and Broadway. 15. Buffalo Bill's Wild West Parade on Fifth Avenue 16. Skating on the Lake - Ice skating in Central Park 17. Dewey Arch stood at Madison Square over 5th Avenue between 25th and 24th Streets. It was demolished in 1900. 18. Automobile Parade - Downtown Manhattan on the corner of E. 27th Street and Madison Avenue, with the old Madison Square Garden in the background (now the New York Life Building). Stanford White, the building's architect, was murdered in the rooftop restaurant. 19. New York Police Parade - Parade turning into 14th Street from Broadway. In the background is Morton Hose, today the Union Square Theatre. 20. A month earlier from almost the same spot, footage shows the great blizzard that year. In the background is the statue of Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, who designed the Statue of Liberty. The statue still stands today. 21. Union Square - a fight between two newspaper sellers, likely young boys. 22. Panorama from the Tower of Brooklyn Bridge 23. 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as Kim Jong Un

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as Kim Jong Un. Make sure you SUBSCRIBE and join the QSquad ARMY! http://bit.ly/qsquad As a follow up to my 10 hours of walking in NYC wearing a romper, I decided to see how New Yorkers would react to seeing Kim Jong Un walking around. We walked through 3 neighborhoods: Harlem, Wall Street, and Koreatown. New York definitely took notice. To be honest, I was quite nervous to see how New York would react to this Kim Jong-Un social experiment. I was surprised as to the positive reception he received. There was a lot of comedy, a little bit of catcalling and only a tiny bit of street harassment. In a strange way, it gives me hope that differences can be resolved between all the countries and that we can find a way to co-exist as well as find a way to help the people of North Korea. Should upstate New York secede from NYC? | NYS Exposed

03:59
Story: http://whec.tv/1Yr7uwM A group of people think New York state should be split between upstate and downstate. The Rockefeller Institute says as upstate taxpayers we rely on the help of downstate taxpayers. So what would happen if we separate and lost that help? That's what we asked the leader of the group pushing that plan.
