Shortly after the Sep. 11 terrorist attacks, New York Gov. George E. Pataki wrote a letter to the Navy requesting to bestow the name “New York” on a warship in honor of the victims. During the naming ceremony aboard the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in Manhattan, Pataki said, “USS New York will ensure that all New Yorkers and the world will never forget the evil attacks of September 11, and the courage and compassion New Yorkers showed in response to terror,” according to the Navy. We were in the P1 class aboard the Queen Elizabeth ship for a trans-Atlantic crossing from England to the USA. The P1 class is the highest Princess class onboard the Cunard ships, only the Queen class is higher. The QE is the sister ship to the Queen Victoria, but the Queen Mary 2 is a little different as well as being the largest of the Cunard ships. We took the QM2 from New York to England in the summer of 2015 and this is the return leg in the winter.

El Galeon's journey to New York from Spain followed the same royute Columbus followed when he sailed to America. It took us 24 days to cross the Atlantic and arrive in the Dominican Republic. From there it went to Puerto Rico, Miami, along the Florida coast, and finally to New York. The ship is part of the 500th anniversary of explorer Ponce de Leon's landing. It will be on display just a short time, until Aug. 22, 2013. It is docked just a few hundred yards from the huge Intrepid aircraft carrier in New York Harbor at Pier 84.

Over the last century, Witte Marine has slowly dismantled hundreds of ships that once crowded the bustling piers of New York's coastline. Even with a steady stream of salvage work and deconstruction, many old tugboats and smaller harbor ships have accumulated on the shores of Arthur Kill and now rot in shallow water. Ahh yes, the former T5 Brawling Champion! Can she still strut her stuff? Well.... yes and no. This ship is punished heavily by the T5 Match Maker which puts her, almost too consistently, against T7 ships and she gets STOMPED by T7 ships but when she is put in a match against T4's, T5's, and T6's she can hold her own still. She is no longer fun to play though and the MM is 100% the reason why I don't enjoy her. She IS maneuverable, she does have decent AA, her guns do hit hard, but her problem is that at T7 everything outclasses her by such large margins that it is nearly suicidal to play her. WG really needs to fix T5 match making!! Anyway, it's a real shame because the New Yorks were both great ships with good history to them. Heck, you can STILL see one today! What's not to love about that?

Made in the 1950s by the Port Authority, "PORT OF NEW YORK" shows the world's largest, busiest port in action, with stunning views of the Big Apple and its waterfront, with passenger ships, ferries and freighters moving along the Hudson. Throughout the film, wonderful views of New York harbor, the city, and New Jersey waterfront are seen. The film was written by Oeveste Granducci, who wrote a book entitled "Metropolis in Motion" for the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority and the Port of New York Authority in 1958, perhaps the same year this film was released. The film was directed by Henwar Rodakiewicz and shot by David Quaid, with music by King Palmer, who made many contributions to the library of British production music company KPM; his compositions for KPM have since been used in many films and television programs, to the present day. The liner SS United States is seen at the 1:46 mark. Barges are seen moving in the port at the 3:20 mark. At 4:30, a huge steam locomotive is seen being lifted by an enormous crane. Dock workers are shown in the pre-container era, moving various materials and cargo. At 7:49, tunnel entrances to NYC are seen. Harbor pilots and airplane pilots are shown, and at 12:28 aerial views of the passenger liners. Railroad terminals are seen at 14:50, and steam engines at the 14:20 mark. Warehouses are seen at the 19:20 mark. The film ends with a banana boat type passenger ship departing New York Harbor. This is the SS Santa Rosa. This was a passenger and cargo ocean liner built for the Grace Line. She was one of four sister ships (the others being Santa Elena, Santa Lucia and Santa Paula) ordered in 1930 from the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company of Kearny, NJ. Her regular route included inter-coastal service between the east coast and the west coast of the USA via the Caribbean and the Panama Canal. Cruise Ship Carnival Sunshine Leaving New York 6-28-17 [4K] Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny) is the lead ship of the Destiny-class of cruise ships. Along with two of her four sisters, she is operated by Carnival Cruise Line. Built by Fincantieri at its Monfalcone shipyard in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northern Italy, she was christened as Carnival Destiny in Venice, Italy, in November 1996 by Lin Arison, wife of Ted Arison, the founder of Carnival Cruise Line. Upon entering service, Carnival Destiny was the first passenger ship ever built to be over 100,000 tons as measured by gross tonnage for a year. She became Carnival Sunshine on May 5, 2013, after receiving a major renovation featuring all Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades. At a ceremony in New Orleans on November 17, 2013, she was rechristened, with Lin Arison once again serving as her godmother. Carnival Destiny went into dry dock in Trieste, Italy in 2013 to be refitted and renamed Carnival Sunshine. The refitting, which was completed in May 2013, had been delayed a month to allow for new back-up generator systems to be installed after Carnival announced the first part of its fleet-wide review. Two of Carnival Sunshine's European sailings were cancelled to allow time for the generators to be installed. The ship was renamed due to the size and scope of the renovation, which included almost every guest area on the ship. The propulsion system consists of six thruster units, three forward and three aft, each with variable-pitch propellers and 1760-kW motors. The electricity for the motors is provided by diesel generators. Given a multimillion-dollar refurbishment in 2005, Carnival Destiny featured three pools, a variety of dining options, lounges, nightclubs, a casino, duty-free shopping and a spa. Carnival Destiny received more upgrades in 2010, including a movie screen on the Lido deck and cabin renovations. On 6 March 2012, Carnival announced that Destiny would undergo a US $155-million dollar refit, and re-christening of the ship as Carnival Sunshine, constituting the most major refit Carnival has ever attempted. The ship was re-launched on 5 May 2013. The refit included a racing themed waterpark with one of the biggest slides in Carnival's fleet. As Carnival Destiny, the ship sailed 4- and 5-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Miami. Her sister ship, Carnival Victory, replaced it in San Juan. In February 2013 Carnival Destiny departed on an 18-day transatlantic cruise departing Miami and arriving in Venice. Once she arrived in Italy, Carnival Destiny underwent the drydock operation and became the Carnival Sunshine. She returned to New Orleans in November 2013 for a series of week-long round-trip Caribbean cruises.
