In our news wrap Wednesday, Virginia's vacant state legislative seat has come down to a tie. Judges ruled today that candidates Shelly Simonds and David Yancey are dead even, after Simonds had been originally told she won by a single vote. Also, Congress worked on a spending bill to keep the government running through mid-January, ahead of a Friday deadline to avoid a shutdown.

http://www.tomrichey.net In this lecture on the history of the Virginia Colony, Tom Richey discusses the failed attempt by Walter Raleigh to plant a permanent settlement on Roanoke Island during a war with Spain and the early hardships endured by the settlers of the Jamestown Colony and the leadership of John Smith. John Rolfe changed the fortunes of the Virginia Colony (and of the entire Chesapeake region) when he planted a new strain of tobacco that grew well in the Chesapeake climate. Tobacco became the primary cash crop in the Chesapeake region during the colonial period. The second part of this lecture focuses on the labor sources employed in the Virginia Colony and tensions between the settlers and the local Powhatan Indians. Indentured servants were the primary labor force in Virginia in the early 17th century but in the late 17th century - especially following Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 - African slavery became much more prominent. The planting of cash crops required a lot of land and the English colonists continued to press into the interior of Virginia. In 1622, the Powhatan Indians struck back, killing over 300 colonists in what is known as the 1622 Indian Massacre. The content of this lecture spans the end of APUSH Period 1 and the beginning of APUSH Period 2. In most APUSH textbooks, this content will be found in either Chapter 1 or Chapter 2. California voters to weigh splitting into three states A billionaire venture capitalist's bid to split California into three separate states has earned a spot on the ballot in November's mid-term elections. If Tim Draper's Cal-3 initiative gets a majority vote,it would trigger a long process to split California into northern, southern and central states.Mr Draper had campaigned unsuccessfully for six years, initially with a plan to divide the state into six new regions. It is the first time in 150 years that this choice is on the state's ballot.Should the proposal become a reality, it would be the first division of a state since West Virginia split off from Virginia in 1863. According to a memo filed on Tuesday by California's Secretary of State, Mr Draper collected more than 402,468 signatures across the state's counties for the proposal.Cal-3 aims to break California into three new states: Northern California, Southern California and California. The new California state would centre around Los Angeles up to Monterey County. Northern California would include the Bay Area and Sacramento.Southern California would stretch from San Diego to Fresno."Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes," Mr Draper told the Los Angeles Times last summer, after submitting the proposal."States will be more accountable to us and can co-operate and compete for citizens." Is this a new idea? The notion of splitting California up has been around as long as the state itself. There have been over 200 attempts to divvy up the state by lawmakers, counties and well-off individuals like Mr Draper since California was founded in 1850.In 1859, California sent a proposal to split the North from the South to US Congress, but the Civil War left lawmakers too preoccupied to vote on it.Since then, initiatives to section the state into thirds or in half have floated around without much momentum. In 2012 and 2014, Mr Draper proposed splitting California into six News Today, Breaking News, Breaking news today, US News, UK News, trump news, World news

But in the state of Virginia, legislators want to remove that power from the press by shielding police officers from public scrutiny. Senate Bill 552, which has already been approved by the Senate, hopes to classify the names of all local police officers and fire marshals as “personnel records,” shielding these individuals from the responsibility of dealing with public backlash in the case that something goes awry. Two civil rights groups that oppose S.B. 552 say the bill goes too far, proposing less transparency at a time when the pressure to hold police officers accountable for their actions has ignited a growing movement demanding reform. If the bill is signed into law they fear it will represent an unprecedented move, opening the door for other states to follow suit. Legislative candidate Jennifer Carroll Foy's first bid for office puts her on the front lines of a Virginia statewide election. It's being watched for early hints on how voters feel about President Donald Trump. The 35-year-old public defender is one of 49 Democrats vying for Republican-held seats in the state's House of Delegates, up from 29 two years ago. She has cited Trump's victory as a tipping point that pushed her to run. The races will test whether Democrats can convert Virginians' unfavorable opinion of the Republican president in polls into votes. They hope to start clawing back some of the almost 1,000 legislative seats lost nationwide under Democratic President Barack Obama. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/Z6T6XXQ3DPw/us-virginia-election-idUSKBN18X19K http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

by Cleve Bryan NORFOLK -- Virginia Lawmakers are trying to help out with the re-population of honeybees, and now they're actually taking money to try and sweeten the deal a little bit. Starting in July, anyone who wants to keep honeybees can receive a grant for $200 per hive, up to $2,400 per person. "I think people who might be reluctant to get into bee keeping, there's a little incentive there, they might get in," says Frank Walker, president of Norfolk Beekeepers and past president of the Tidewater Beekeepers Association. Governor McDonnell signed SB 354 and HB 300 into law after initially being proposed as a tax credit by the College Leaders Program. "The last five years, the state of Virginia has lost 34 percent of their bees annually, so you're looking at three out of ten colonies are dying," says Walker. A single bee hive produces, on average, 80 pounds of honey per year, but honey bees also play a much, much bigger role in our country's food production. "There are 80 crops in Virginia that rely primarily on honey bees for pollination, so all your fruits and vegetables are pollinated by honeybees. So if you want to have abundant and affordable fruits and vegetables in the country then bee keeping is the way to go," says Walker. The cost to set up a new hive in your yard runs $250-500. Walker recommends anyone interested in getting started attend a meeting with a local beekeeping association. Norfolk Beekeepers meet on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Virginia Zoo, and the Tidewater Beekeepers Association meets the first Thursday of each month at Towne Bank in Chesapeake. Walker says the effort it takes to maintain a hive is minimal but the effects are far-reaching. Basically the bees do all the work. "It takes 556 workers, traveling 55,000 miles, pollinating 2 million flowers to make a pound of honey," says Walker. There is also a SWARM HOTLINE if you see a swarm and worry about being stung. Call 757-285-4509 and someone will remove the bees and preserve them.

After Years of Trying, Virginia Finally Will Expand Medicaid Virginia’s Republican-controlled Senate voted on Wednesday to open Medicaid to an additional 400,000 low-income adults next year, making it all but certain that the state will join 32 others that have already expanded the public health insurance program under the Affordable Care Act. Republican lawmakers in the state had blocked Medicaid expansion for four straight years, but a number of them dropped their opposition after their party almost lost the House of Delegates in elections last fall and voters named health care as a top issue. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/30/health/medicaid-expansion-virginia.html ........ ✪ Welcome to the Social Hot News channel Wish you and your friends watch the video fun, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ5cBFeiKBczyRaAacl_a9Q/featured?sub_confirmation=1 https://plus.google.com/+CÔNGTYCPTMDTVNB https://www.facebook.com/tinxahoi.channel/ https://twitter.com/TinxahoiChannel https://www.instagram.com/socialhotnews/

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) said Friday the state's Republican representatives need to get out of their corner and "do their job" to reach a deal on Medicaid expansion. While McAuliffe has reached a bipartisan agreement with the state's senate, he has been in a standoff with the house republicans, who have yet to budge on expanding Medicaid. Failure to reach an agreement by July 1 could mean a shutdown for the state, much like the deadlock that shut down the federal government in late 2013. "No matter where you may be on the health care bill, it's now the law of the land," McAuliffe said as he discussed his strategy to expand the program in Virginia. W.Virginia Will Never Be The Same After What Dem Governor Announced He’s Doing Because Of Trump Source Photo and Content: https://goo.gl/KCnvuf Subscribe Hot News : https://goo.gl/8KJSaS G+ : https://goo.gl/O7XuC7 Blog : https://goo.gl/E983tR W.Virginia Will Never Be The Same After What Dem Governor Announced He’s Doing Because Of Trump. West Virginia is about to see a major change to their state after what their Democratic Governor Jim Justice plans to do tonight. Three Republicans caught wind of it and let the press know of a huge announcement Justice is going to make tonight that will drastically change things in the state for citizens. It’s being reported that this decision came after seven months of President Donald Trump in office and now the governor has seen enough. He’s taking matters into his own hands and doing so in an unexpected way, using Trump’s rally tonight to let everyone know his huge news. President Trump must have known a little something about what Justice was going to use his rally to do tonight, as he previously teased about potentially having a big announcement at his rally in Justice’s state tonight. It’s because of our president that the governor has made this big decision so it only seems fitting to use his rally to make the announcement. West Virginia has been Democrat-run and because of that much of the decisions made are in favor of liberal policies. This has even been the case in spite of the overwhelming population being Trump-supporters, which is why Trump picked Huntington to hold his rally tonight. “At least 1,000 supporters lined the streets ahead of the president’s expected appearance, wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and chanting ‘USA! USA!’,” Fox News reported. The eager Trump believers are about to get more good news than just what their favorite president of the United States has to say. In an unprecedented move, Governor Justice has seen enough results from Trump’s administration and the passionate Trump supporters in his own state, to switch parties. The long-time Democrat has probably seen the destruction within his own party and appreciate what’s working with Republicans enough to become one. The New York Times first reported Justice’s party-switching plans with details as to how he came to this monumental decision: Gov. Jim Justice of West Virginia, a Democrat who was elected last year even as President Trump carried the state by 42 points, is expected to announce Thursday night at a rally with Mr. Trump that he is changing parties, according to three sources familiar with the plans. Speaking to reporters at the White House Thursday, Mr. Trump promised “a very big announcement” at a gathering in Huntington, W.V., that is expected to draw thousands of supporters from across Appalachia, a region that gave Mr. Trump some of the largest margins of his election. Mr. Justice, a billionaire coal, and real estate magnate ran as a conservative Democrat and declined to endorse Hillary Clinton in 2016. But even as West Virginia has become a reliable Republican state in presidential elections and further down the ballot, a handful of Democrats have still been able to win office. Mr. Justice has a lot in common with Trump in that they were both successful businessmen before becoming politicians and both do things their own, rogue way in this arena. In his first months as governor, Mr. Justice, a colorful and hulking figure who stands over six feet, seven inches, drew headlines beyond West Virginia’s border for bringing a plate of cow excrement into the state capitol to express his anger at a Republican-passed budget proposal, the New York Times reported. “What we have is nothing more than a bunch of political bull you-know-what,” Mr. Justice said, pulling the lid off a silver platter to reveal the scented prop atop a printed copy of the budget. Trump has a positive effect on people, the economy, citizens, and now incredibly, politicians. It’s hard to deny the change he’s brought to this country in just his first seven months, which included the monumental task of undoing his predecessor’s mess and building further from there. Liberals refuse to give him the much-deserved attention because it would prove them wrong, but the proof is in the results which they personally benefit from. The people of West Virginia are lucky to have such a strong, capable, and not liberally blind leader. Justice is getting on the Trump and Republican train because he knows it takes him and his state down a path of success. More Democrat politicians would be well served to follow his lead.

Dozens of mental health experts appealed for clemency for Ricky Gray, arguing he had been damaged by a childhood filled with merciless beatings and rape, but Gov. "It is the Governor's responsibility to ensure that the laws of the Commonwealth are properly carried out unless circumstances merit a stay or commutation of the sentence," McAuliffe said in a statement. If that fails, Gray will become the second prisoner executed in the U.S. this year. He was sentenced to death in connection with a 2006 quadruple murder of a well-known Richmond family, musician Bryan Harvey, wife Kathryn and their children, 9-year-old Stella and 4-year-old Ruby. http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/lethal-injection/ricky-gray-set-be-executed-virginia-family-murders-n708306?cid=public-rss_20170118 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
