This film shows some impressions of the New York City subway in Manhattan. The NYC subway system is really old and the infrastructure shows a lot of wear and tear; especially the stations are in pretty rough shape. The system is quite efficient, though. Many lines have four tracks, where the inner two tracks are used by express services, which only stop at major (interchange) stations. The platform layout at these stations allows for convenient transfer between express and local services. This film was shot on a Saturday afternoon. Curiously, there seemed to be significantly less frequent service than during weekdays, with some lines even not operating at all. Some stations were quite deserted while others (especially those along the Lexington Avenue line) were overcrowded. Enjoy! Index to the film: 00:00 – 47–50 Streets / Rockefeller Center 01:20 – West 4th Street / Washington Square 02:23 – Spring Street (note the express service passing the station at 4:05) 04:26 – Canal Street 05:31 – Riding an R160 class train on the E line from Canal Street to World Trade Center 07:04 – World Trade Center station 07:33 – A brief view of the 9/11 memorial and the new 1 World Trade Center building 08:17 – Fulton Street (platform for J and Z lines; quite deserted this day) 08:38 – Brooklyn Bridge / City Hall 10:34 – Grand Central / 42nd Street 11:15 – 68th Street / Hunter College

On Monday, New York City’s subway system turned 110 years old and celebrated by releasing two vintage subway trains on Manhattan’s high-volume 1, 2, and 3 lines between Times Square and 96th Street. Traveling to New York? Great! Unsure about how to use the subway system? Don't be. This video has the essential information you need to know about the subway system in NYC. No subway voyage is complete without a trusted smartphone app. I recommend Citymapper, but Google Maps also works well. UPDATE: As of 2018, countdown clocks are in every station in the subway system.

The story: in 1986 I made a round trip through the USA and Canada. The starting point was New York. So I filmed some scenes in Manhattan. And was going in the underground at 43nd St & Timesquare. I filmed with a big ARRIflex 16mm camera with a 120m magazine with 7250 Kodak 16mm color reversal Tungsten 400 ASA film and a Schneider Cine Xenon 1:2/16mm lens . This equipment is good for 10 Minutes recording duration at 25 f/sec. After I time a man comes to me and said, he´s a cameraman at ABC and filming at the subway is strictly forbidden without any permission and police is on the other end of the platform. So I was leaving the station, but I had these beautiful pics of the old times in the New York subway. At the same time I recorded the stereo sound with a SONY WM-D6C with two Sennheiser micros in stereo. In 1986 I edited the pics to the song of the band "London Beat" -- "9am at a New York subway". About 25 years later I was uploading this movie to YouTube. But SONY Music was locking my movie because of the copyright of the song. So I deleted the audio track und was uploading the silence version. After the great response to this video of the New York subway of 1986 now I opened my archive once again with the original film and composed it with the original stereo sound to this over 10 minutes long "directors cut" of all scenes, I filmed at this day in June 1986. Enjoy it! Thank you to Judy for telecine & color correction and Marion for the original sound recording.

In the past 100 years, the New York subway system has grown from a nine-mile line to a four-borough system and one of the most vital elements is the signal system. This episode joins the students of the signal school in New York as they learn to master everything from century old manual "interlocks" to latest-generation computerized track-management software. It also examines the safety issues concerning working with electrified rails and massive trains. The episode also follows the emergency management response team as they plot rescues, escapes and re-routing on the fly, in order to ensure the safety of both the riders and workers of the subway.

After almost a century of delays, the first phase of the Second Avenue subway is set to open for service on Jan. 1, officials at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said. The new line is an extension of the Q line, which currently stops at 57th Street and Seventh Avenue and will run along Manhattan’s East Side, the New York Times reported. Beginning in January, Q trains will travel to a station at Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street and then to three new stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets. They have been under construction since 2007, although planning for the project as a whole dates all the way back to 1929, according to the Wall Street Journal. The first phase of the project cost around $4.4 billion, reported the New York Times. The MTA is expecting the new route to carry 200,000 riders each day, which should ease overcrowding on the No. 4, 5 and 6 lines along the Lexington Avenue route, which carry 1.3 million commuters daily, AM New York reported. The second phase of the project is in the initial planning stages, and would extend the line to 125th Street in Harlem, according to the New York Times. However, the second phase will cost billions of dollars and take several years to complete, while plans to extend the line to Lower Manhattan are less certain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. This is a film I made after some adventures underground with Steve Duncan (undercity.org) last summer. We also have a teaser video which you can watch on my vimeo page (vimeo.com/5752275). Steve and I just completed another underground expedition with Norwegian explorer Erling Kagge (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erling_Kagge). It was featured in a three page article on the front page of the NY Times metro section and was written by Alan Feuer (nytimes.com/2011/01/02/nyregion/02underground.html). We were also covered by NPR's Jacki Lyden who's report will be aired on 1/2/11 and posted on NPR's site. Shot on a canon 5d mkii with canon 24 f/1.4 (version 1) with the zacuto rapid fire, Zoom H4N and a sennheiser g2 wireless lav. The zacuto was really great at being there when I needed it but also staying out of the way. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

New York police arrested a woman accused of pushing an unsuspecting commuter in front of a subway train as it arrived at a busy Times Square train platform on Monday, killing the victim as bystanders watched in horror. The victim was shoved onto the tracks of a southbound No. 1 train at about 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) and pronounced dead on the scene shortly afterward, a police spokeswoman said. About three dozen police and other emergency officials responded to the incident at the subway station in midtown Manhattan at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street, one of New York's busiest transit stops. The victim was standing on a train platform when the suspect, wearing a pink shirt and scarf, lunged at her, the New York Post reported, citing witnesses. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect knew the victim, who police did not identify. Last year a woman was convicted and sentenced to 24 years imprisonment for fatally pushing a man into the path of an oncoming New York subway train in 2012. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/WHY68PCLT6Q/us-new-york-subway-idUSKBN1322HH http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

City Hall, also known as City Hall Loop, was the original southern terminal station of the first line of the New York City Subway, built by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT), named the "Manhattan Main Line", and now part of the IRT Lexington Avenue Line. Opened on October 27, 1904, this station underneath the public area in front of City Hall was designed to be the showpiece of the new subway. The station was designed by Rafael Guastavino. The main consulting architects on the IRT stations were George Lewis Heins and Christopher Grant LaFarge for the company Heins & LaFarge. This station is unusually elegant in architectural style, and is unique among the original IRT stations, employing Romanesque Revival architecture. The platform and mezzanine feature Guastavino tile, skylights, colored glass tilework and brass chandeliers. Passenger service was discontinued on December 31, 1945, making it a ghost station, although the station is still used as a turning loop for 6 trains.

Location: New York City, NY Project Owner: MTA – Capital Construction Company The first major expansion of New York City’s subway system in more than 50 years, the project included building some of the largest caverns in North America for two of the new stations. The tunnel liner was not the typical steel reinforcing bars, but instead only steel and polypropylene fibers. With such deep caverns, the team used 3D renderings to detail the proper arrangement of the rebar.

All of these videos were taken from my Canon Powershot S110. New intro video as well. I wanted to use this little song for a while now, but the crowd noise was in it. I ended up using it anyway because it actually works nicely, can't edit out the crowd noise though, ugh. This is one of the lesser fanned stations in the system. The stations between 14th Street & Chambers Street along the 7th Avenue Line aren't always checked out by other buffs. What you'll see here are several videos of 1, 2 and 3 trains all making their way through Franklin Street Station. I hope you guys enjoy the video. This term was used to describe certain stations on Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn metro networks that were closed during the period of Berlin's division during the Cold War. Since then, the term has come to be used to describe any disused station on an underground railway line, especially those actively passed through by passenger trains. The New York City Subway is a rapid transit system that serves four of the five boroughs of New York City in the U.S. state of New York: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Its predecessors—the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT), the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT), and the Independent Subway System (IND)—were consolidated in 1940. Since then, stations of the New York City Subway have been permanently closed, either entirely or in part. The largest number of closed New York City Subway stations consist of stations on abandoned and demolished elevated lines once operated by the IRT and the BMT, both of which were privately held companies. After their takeover by the City of New York (the IND was already owned and operated by New York City), the three former systems were no longer in competition with each other. Thus, elevated lines that duplicated underground lines were the first to close. Other elevated lines that did not create a redundancy in the system, such as the Bronx portion of the IRT Third Avenue Line and a major portion of the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line were later demolished. Two stations in which sections of track still operate have been demolished. The Dean Street station was demolished as part of the rebuilding of the BMT Franklin Avenue Line, and the Cortlandt Street station of the IRT Broadway – Seventh Avenue Line was demolished after it sustained heavy damage caused by the September 11, 2001 attacks. The remaining closed stations and portions of stations are intact and are abandoned. The exception is the Court Street station: it is the site of the New York Transit Museum, a museum that documents the history of public transportation in New York City. One of these abandoned stations, the outer platforms of the Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station, is occasionally used for filming purposes. The criterion for closing stations, as explained by spokesman Charles Seaton, is: "We do not shut stations down because of low ridership. The only reason we have closed a station is because of its proximity to another station... The smaller stations are just as necessary as the larger ones." Between 23rd Street and 14th Street – Union Square. Closed after platform lengthening of both adjacent stations and the opening of new entrances at 22nd Street and 15th Street deemed the 18th Street station to be within proximity. Between 96th Street and 86th Street. Closed after platform lengthening of the 96th Street platforms deemed the station to be within proximity. North of the 155th Street station, the elevated line crossed the Harlem River and went into a tunnel similarly to how the 125th Street subway station comes out of the tunnel onto a high viaduct. This was done in both places to keep the grade of the tracks relatively level. Closed with the discontinuation of the Polo Grounds Shuttle. South of Brooklyn Bridge – City Hall on a curved balloon loop. Closed due to low ridership, short platform length and the proximity of the busier Brooklyn Bridge – City Hall station. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. West of Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets. Closed due to low ridership and proximity to other Downtown Brooklyn stations. Site now houses the New York Transit Museum. Between the Manhattan Bridge and DeKalb Avenue. Closed due to proximity to DeKalb Avenue and construction of a flying junction to ease a choke point in the area. The southbound platform no longer exists; the northbound platform now houses the Masstransiscope zoetrope artwork by Bill Brand visible from Manhattan-bound trains coming from the local track at DeKalb Avenue.

The New York Transit Museum archives have this vintage video produced by the NY Transportation Board in 1949 about the New York City subway system. At the time, the fare was $0.10 - and the turnstiles had been modified to accommodate a dime. The first subway token wasn't used until 1953. The Malbone Street Subway Train Wreck occurred on November 1, 1918 in Brooklyn New York City. A subway train from the Franklin Avenue Shuttle Line was heading south towards Prospect Park Station very fast. When it arrived at the Malbone Street Tunnel that has a double curve or an S shaped curve at high speed, the accident occurred and the train was wrecked. The passenger cars were made of wood and broke into pieces very easily. The end result was 97 people killed and 235 injured. There is lots of literature available on Internet about New York City's worst subway accident. When I use to live in Brooklyn New York City I went to that station many times but did not know what happened there until several years later. In the late 1950's I use to notice that people use y to look in a strange way across the tracks at an old abandoned train platform that was not in use. It looked spooky (I was in elementary school). During the late 1970's I also noticed people looking at that area as if something strange was there. Then on TV news that 1918 train wreck was mentioned. It was mentioned that the Malbone tracks towards the right hand tunnel was closed because it was very dangerous and that trains did not enter from that side now. The last time I saw that station was in 1990 and it still looked spooky. Thus I made this video about that tragic event in 1918 for others to see, a little bit of history.

http://vision-traffic.ptvgroup.com/en-uk/products/ptv-vissim/ - This is a visualization of a PTV Vissim simulation of passengers leaving a New York subway train. PTV Vissim integrates road traffic, public transport and pedestrian dynamics simulation all in one software solution and integrates the modes of transport with full interaction. As shown in this video the passengers alighting from the arriving trains define the demand on the station infrastructure and the pedestrian's behavior determines when the train can leave the station again. Train delays may occur by unusually high numbers of alighting passengers and densely populated platforms. This video showing the subway station was recorded directly from VISSIM without a post-processing video production tool. The 3D visualization can also be watched during the simulation.
