The genre developed from roots in African musical traditions, African-American work songs, spirituals, and African American folk music. Blues incorporated spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads. The blues form, ubiquitous in jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll, is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, the blues scale and specific chord progressions, of which the twelve-bar blues is the most common. Blue notes (or "worried notes"), usually thirds or fifths flattened in pitch, are also an essential part of the sound. Blues shuffles or walking bass reinforce the trance-like rhythm and form a repetitive effect known as the groove. Blues as a genre is also characterized by its lyrics, bass lines, and instrumentation. Early traditional blues verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. It was only in the first decades of the 20th century that the most common current structure became standard: the AAB pattern, consisting of a line sung over the four first bars, its repetition over the next four, and then a longer concluding line over the last bars. Early blues frequently took the form of a loose narrative, often relating the racial discrimination and other challenges experienced by African-Americans. Gods of Music - Sound Without Time! The Mississippi Juke Joint Keeping the Blues Alive

03:05
Robert “Bilbo” Walker has been playing blues music for over 60 years. Hailing from the same area of the Mississippi Delta as Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, B.B. King and others, Walker has become a legend of the genre in his own right. And for the past seven years, he’s been working on opening his own live music venue, known locally as a “juke joint.” Juke joints—or quasi-legal drinking establishments with live music—are a relic of blues music that were popular until about 50 years ago. Today, they’re nearly extinct. But Walker just celebrated the grand opening of Wonderlight City—a classic-style juke joint located in a remote rural area 20 miles from Clarksdale, Mississippi. With nothing but fields surrounding the establishment, this is one venue you’ll really have to go out of your way to find. But when you happen upon it, you’re in for a real treat. Mississippi Blues - 1991 Trip to North Mississippi

20:11
Still photos and blues music combined together into a video. My personal road trip down Highway 61, through North Mississippi and Memphis,TN, looking for the roots of the delta blues. Clarksdale, MS, William Faulkner's home, Memphis, TN. And ending up finding blues history in Sharon Hill, PA. It was quite a trip! Note: Due to a copyright claim, I was forced to take a song out of the video at 9:22. Otherwise my video was entirely blocked from viewing. I appealed the claim, as I hadn't used any Naxos music in this video, but my appeal was denied. Please excuse the 2 minutes of missing audio.

Mississippi Delta: Blues Trail road trip

05:41
Louisiana may be the birthplace of Jazz, but Mississippi Delta, is where the Blues were born! Music, comfort food and southern hospitality run deep in the Delta. My journey followed Highway 61, which is also known as the “Blues Trail.” One could argue that Highway 61 rivals Route 66, certainly for its musical significance. I found the Mississippi Delta to exude charm and hospitality, while its music permeated my soul and found a place in my heart. I learned the tune from a recording by Roy Book Binder. Roy does a better job with this - and he manages to sing at the same time! I am playing a delightful Gibson J-50 made in 1961.
