A Democratic Candidate Forum for Texas Congressional District 23

01:13:16
A candidate forum with several Democratic hopefuls for Texas' 23rd Congressional District, currently held by U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-Helotes. TX-23 stretches from San Antonio to El Paso and is the most competitive district in the state, a regular target of both national Democrats and Republicans. The forum will feature several Democratic candidates for the congressional seat, including Judy Canales, a former Obama and Clinton appointee from Eagle Pass; Jay Hulings, a former federal prosecutor from San Antonio; Gina Ortiz Jones, a former Air Force intelligence officer from San Antonio; Uvalde resident Angie Villescaz; and Rick Treviño, a former high school teacher from San Antonio. During this hourlong forum, the candidates discuss their ideas about immigration, health care and other issues that will confront the district in the years ahead. Moderated by Patrick Svitek, political reporter for The Texas Tribune, and Beth Frerking, editor in chief of The Rivard Report. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - → Subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/thetexastribune → Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/texastribune → Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/texastribune

A Texas school district that forgot democracy

01:12
They teach the history of American democracy in the tiny Sidney ISD in central Texas, but the superintendent and school board didn't live those lessons. The district did not hold an election for a decade. Board members extended their own terms. The strange case of Sidney school district's decade-long spree without an election has never been told publicly. Even most taxpayers in Comanche County, where the district with only one school campus is situated, don't know the story. DPS Releases Body Camera Video of Ellis County Traffic Stop and DWI Arrest - 05.20.18

01:54:48
On May 20, 2018, at approximately 1:32 a.m., a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper observed a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu traveling south on Interstate 35 in Ellis County near U.S. 287. The vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Based on the traffic stop, the driver was arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI). The driver, identified as Sherita Dixon-Cole, 37, from Grapevine, was arrested and transported to the Ellis County Jail, where she was charged with DWI. Following the arrest, spurious and false accusations related to this traffic stop were made against the Texas Trooper. Upon learning of those allegations, the Texas Department of Public Safety immediately took action to review the video in connection with this traffic stop and arrest. The video shows absolutely no evidence to support the egregious and unsubstantiated accusations against the Trooper during the DWI arrest of the suspect. The Department is appalled that anyone would make such a despicable, slanderous and false accusation against a peace officer who willingly risks his life every day to protect and serve the public. At the department’s request, the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office has reviewed video of the traffic stop and arrest, and authorized the release of the video. The department today proactively and publicly released the video captured by the Trooper’s body camera (which is posted here). (Note: Certain sections of the video have been blurred or rendered inaudible to protect information that is confidential by state statute, including Cole’s personally identifiable information.)

Texas High School Enforces Sick New Ban, So Outraged Students Call In The Feds

05:13
A group on Texas High School cheerleaders have won a court case in the Texas Supreme Court to continue to display Bible verses on their banners. Their 6-year saga began when in 2012 the school superintendent received a complaint from the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation and as a result, the school district ordered the team to stop displaying the Bible quotes immediately. So the cheerleaders took matters into their own hands and did what all of us Americans should be doing when our First Amendment right to free speech is being trampled on. They took the fight all the way to the Texas Supreme Court. And they won. In January of 2016, the Texas Supreme Court unanimously voted in favor of the cheerleaders, but the battle didn’t end there. The liberal activists took the case all the way to the Liberal 9th circuit court of appeals, where in September of 2017, they actually backed the Texas Supreme Court’s decision. The normally far left wing liberal appeals court ruled the cheerleaders’ rights to display Bible quotes was “private speech” and because of this, it should continue without issue. Here is more via The Dallas News: “Texas cheerleaders can display Bible verses at high school football games, a state appeals court ruled Thursday. The Ninth Court of Appeals sided with students from Kountze High School, who sued after the district barred Christian messages from cheer banners at football games. The cheerleaders’ choice to display Bible verses is protected as “private speech,” the appeals court ruled. “We are pleased that once again religious liberty is vindicated and that cheerleaders across the state of Texas have the right to have religious messages on banners at high school football games,” Hiram Sasser, general counsel of the Plano-based conservative nonprofit law firm First Liberty, wrote in a news release. “No school district should be able to censor, ban, or claim ownership of the private religious speech of its students.” Since their legal fight began in 2012, the Kountze cheerleaders have received widespread support from Texas’ top Republicans, including Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, Attorney General Ken Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbott. The cheerleaders were previously defended by James Ho, whom President Donald Trump nominated to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday, and First Assistant Attorney General Jeff Mateer, who has come under fire after videos surfaced of him describing transgender children as evidence of “Satan’s plan” and warning that same-s*x marriage would lead to polygamy and bestiality. Mateer, who left First Liberty in 2016 to join the office of the attorney general, was also nominated to the federal bench this month. The case dates back five years, when district officials banned cheerleaders in the southeast Texas school district from displaying banners with Christian themes. The move was made after the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a nonprofit that advocates for the separation of church and state, complained the banners resulted in a publicly-funded school district endorsing a specific religion. District officials later decided to allow the banners, but retained the ability to control their content. A district court judge sided with the cheerleaders in 2013. But the appeals court soon after said their lawsuit was moot due to the district’s policy change. Eventually, the case was kicked up to the Texas Supreme Court, which remanded it back to the appeals court last year. The court’s ruling this week found that since cheerleading is not related to the “pedagogical concerns” of the district, the banners did not amount to “government speech.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: https://goo.gl/BmTYua ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Google+: https://goo.gl/HHKysp ◆ Email: quylao0711@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)
