But what other powers does the Queen of many titles have and what could she theoretically do if she decided to flex the full might of the authority she wields? As it turns out, thanks to the Royal Prerogative, a terrifying amount if she really felt like it, or, at least, assuming parliament went by the letter of the law and they and the people didn’t decide to stage a little revolt. WEIRD Facts About Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II has been the Queen of the United Kingdom for a long, long time, so of course, there are bound to be things about her that come out over time, facts and rumors about her life. I tried to gather as many facts about Her Majesty as I could and threw in a few of the random, speculative things too. The Royals are people just like us, which means they’re odd, maybe even a bit strange, and the Queen is no exception! Enough talk, here we go, this is Strange Facts about Queen Elizabeth II 8. Corgi Collection So I thought that maybe that it was an exaggeration when I read that Queen Elizabeth has had more than thirty corgis since becoming Queen, but that’s not the case. She really had had that many since 1952, when she officially became Queen, at times, she had more than just multiple corgis at a time, too. Apparently, in 2007, she had five cocker spaniels, named Oxo, Flash, Bisto, Spick, and Span, as well as five corgis, named Emma, Linnet, Monty, Willow, and Holly. Apparently, she’s a dog person as you can see in this picture of her with four of the beasts! She has loved corgis since she was but a little girl and has owned a fantastic number in the years since she took the throne. 7. Taxes Dear old Queen Elizabeth II isn’t required to pay taxes and is exempt due to the Crown’s legal tax-exempt status, but she pays them anyway, voluntarily. She pays out the equivalent of income tax for income that comes from the Privy Purse (basically an allowance funded by the public) and her private income. I guess that’s a pretty good example of leading by example. She can connect with the people who she rules over and shows that even the Royal aren’t exempt from laws, morally at least. 6. Long-Reigning She became the Queen when she was young—she immediately became Queen when her father passed away in 1952, and she was crowned at age 27 on June 2, 1953, and she’s reigned ever since. Pretty crazy, right? Data from the UK Office of National Statistics show that she’s been in power for so long that 81% of the residents in the UK weren’t even alive when she was given the crown, and she is the world’s longest-reigning monarch! Crazy! 5. All Sorts of People Alright, so the Queen has been, or has been portrayed by, a ton of different people in around a hundred different tv shows and movies! That’s so crazy. She’s been portrayed by Helen Mirren in The Queen (pictured here), Sarah Gadon in A Royal Night Out, most recently by Claire Foy in Netflix’s The Crown (seen in this picture), and by many other actresses throughout many years. It would be crazy to see more than a hundred different famous people’s take on you. I’ve got to imagine it has to feel surreal watching others portray various events and situations in your life. Sounds like something The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror would come up with. 4. Money Problems So, it’s no secret that the Royals have a decent amount of money, I mean the Queen’s estimated private net worth according to Forbes is around 415 million Euros, which is $513,642,595 U.S.! Although she has and makes so much money, she’s nowhere near the wealthiest person in Britain; in fact, she’s nowhere close to being the richest. Brothers Gopi and Sri Hinduja (pictured here) make the top of the list and together, have a net worth of 16.2 billion Euros, or roughly $20 billion in U.S. dollars. Can you even imagine? 3. Message on the Moon Did you know that Elizabeth II has a message on the moon that was taken there by Apollo 11? In fact, there are a bunch of world leaders from the time that wrote notes that were then transferred to a little silicon disc and transported to the moon! There, the disc was placed just below the American flag and left there for, whomever really. Hopefully, aliens, am I right? The Queen wrote a beautiful message which read, “On behalf of the British people, I salute the skill and courage which have brought man to the moon. May this endeavour increase the knowledge and wellbeing of mankind.” 2. Her and Margaret Were Party Animals At least for one night, they were—the night the Second World War was ended on May 8, 1945. Margaret and Elizabeth snuck onto the streets in very slight disguise but still managed to go undetected to party and celebrate the war finally being over. They managed to make it to the center of London, party in the Ritz, and catch their parents appearing on the balcony from the crowd below during a night that Queen Elizabeth calls one of the most memorable nights in her life. Their infamous evening has even been adapted and dramatized in a movie called “A Royal Night Out.” 1...

The Crowning. The Queen sitting in King Edward's Chair, the Archbishop, assisted with other Bishops, come from the Altar: the Dean of Westminster carrying the Crown, and the Archbishop taking the crown did reverently and place it upon the Queen's head. At the sight whereof the people, with loud and repeated shouts, cry, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN The Princes and Princesses, the Peers and Peeresses put on their coronets and caps, and the Kings of Arms their crowns; and the trumpets sound, and by a signal given, the great guns at the Tower were discharged. The acclamation ceasing, the Archbishop says: "God crown you with a crown of glory and righteousness, that having a right faith and manifold fruit of good works, you may obtain the crown of an everlasting kingdom by the gift of him whose kingdom endureth for ever. Amen."

Natural Sound South African President Nelson Mandela met Britain's Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle on Monday on his way to the European Union summit in Cardiff. The pair chatted about family, including the Queen mother, who has just become the oldest Royal in British history. On a typically grey summer's day at Windsor Castle, President Mandela, who is 79 years old, exchanged pleasantries with the Queen. President Nelson Mandela told her she was looking very well. The 72-year-old monarch responded with: "I'm my mother's daughter." The Queen Mother is now officially famous for her age. At 97 years and 315 days old, the Queen Mother has entered the record books as the oldest royal in British history. Mandela said he was sorry he missed her great grandson, Prince Harry, when he visited South Africa last year. The Queen also proudly told Mandela that 13 year old Harry had passed the entrance exam into Britain's exclusive school, Eton. President Mandela told the Queen he thought the exam questions were very difficult - it turned out he had looked at some of the exam papers before arriving at the castle. The President then headed to Cardiff, and the E-U summit, where he will be guest of honour at a luncheon on Tuesday. U.K. Carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth Set for U.S. Visit, F-35B Trials
Earlier this month, Britain’s national security adviser declared that the Royal Navy’s Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers would be unlikely to ever deploy on high-end combat missions without support from friendly forces. The two new flattops would “inevitably be used in a context of allied operations of some kind, if used in a contested environment”, Mark Sedwill told the House of Commons’ Defence Committee on May 1. Lead ship HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) was floated out at Rosyth dockyard in Scotland in 2014, commenced sea trials last June and was commissioned into the Royal Navy on Dec. 7. The future HMS Prince of Wales (R09) was launched at the same yard two weeks later and is now being fitted out. Construction costs for the two ships have totaled £6.2 billion (about $8.4 billion). In August 2017 Queen Elizabeth rendezvoused with the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) carrier strike group during the multinational Exercise Saxon Warrior in the North Sea and northern Atlantic, with some Royal Navy personnel sharpening their aviation-related skills on board the U.S. carrier. The British carrier completed rotary wing trials in February this year, conducting 450 deck landings with Chinook Mk 5 helicopters and 540 landings with Merlin Mk 2 aircraft. Both types flew an average of 10 hours per day in all weather conditions, generating data that will enable technical staff to draw up ship helicopter operating limits. Queen Elizabeth is now alongside in Portsmouth naval base on England’s south coast, covered in tents and scaffolding for a 13-week capability insertion period (CIP) in preparation for an inaugural transatlantic voyage in September. The ship will then conduct a long-awaited first flight trials with F-35B aircraft and is also expected to visit New York City. “Every month sees a graduated increase in the capability the ship can deliver,” Rear Adm. Keith Blount, the Royal Navy’s Assistant Chief of Naval Staff for Aviation, Amphibious Capability and Carriers, said in a press statement last month. “With over a thousand helicopter deck landings already under our belt, we’re developing more expansive clearances for helicopters than we have ever seen before.” “Next up are the jets, and the ship is being fitted with all the kit and communication systems required to ensure the aircraft and carrier can work together as a system. This is highly technical and time-consuming stuff and our sailors, airmen and shipyard workers are doing a great job in piecing it all together,” Blount continued Various fixed-wing landing aids are being installed during the CIP, chief among them the U.S.-designed AN/SPN-41/41A Instrument Carrier Landing System. With an azimuth antenna at the stern of the ship and an elevation antenna on the aft island, this system transmits flight path information to approaching aircraft, which can be viewed in the pilot’s head-up display. Defense science company Qinetiq has developed a flight deck lighting array – dubbed the Bedford array – to assist F-35B rolling vertical landings, but this will be fitted initially to the future Prince of Wales as a technology demonstrator.

(18 May 2012) Britain has come under criticism for inviting the king of Bahrain, whose Gulf state has been engaged in a brutal crackdown on political dissent, to a lunch on Friday celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee. The lunch in Windsor Castle was the largest gathering of foreign royals in Britain since Queen Elizabeth II's grandson, Prince William, was married to Kate Middleton last year. Then, as now, the decision to extend an invitation to members of the Bahraini royal family has angered whose who are upset by the deadly violence deployed against demonstrators since protests erupted in the Gulf state. Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa eventually skipped the royal wedding, saying he didn't want the controversy to tarnish the couple's happy day. But on Friday Buckingham Palace confirmed that his father, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, attended the queen's lunch, along with some 45 other royal guests from around the world. The Foreign Office, which advised Buckingham Palace on the invitations, said that Britain's ties to Bahrain allowed UK officials to talk frankly with the strategic island nation's rulers about "a range of issues including those where we have concerns." Al Khalifa wasn't the only controversial guest dining at Windsor Castle. Swaziland's King Mswati III, who is accused of living in luxury while his people go hungry, also attended the lunch. Other guests included Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands; Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan; the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Saudi Arabia's Prince Mohammed bin Nawwaf bin Abdulaziz al Saud. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry also attended the lunch. The Diamond Jubilee marks 60 years of Elizabeth's reign as Britain's monarch.
