Security measures have been tightened in central London, Saturday, a few days after deadly terrorist attack in Westminster. Large steel structures and bollards were installed overnight around the City of Westminster in order to strengthen defences and prevent another attack. Manned checkpoints, heavily armed police and crash-proof barricades are also among the introduced measures to secure the area. A total of four people were killed, and at least 50 were injured when an assailant, believed to be 52-year-old Khalid Masood - drove a car into a crowd of people on Westminster Bridge. The assailant then stabbed a police officer at the entrance to the Houses of Parliament before he was shot dead by police. Places to see in ( London - UK ) Westminster Westminster is an area of central London within the City of Westminster, part of the West End, on the north bank of the River Thames. Westminster's concentration of visitor attractions and historic landmarks, one of the highest in London, includes the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral. Historically the area lay within St Margaret's parish, City & Liberty of Westminster, Middlesex. The name Westminster originated from the informal description of the abbey church and royal peculiar of St Peter's (Westminster Abbey), literally West of the City of London, indeed until the Reformation there was a reference to the 'East Minster' at Minories (Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate) east of the City; the abbey was part of the royal palace that had been created here by Edward the Confessor. It has been the home of the permanent institutions of England's government continuously since about 1200 (High Middle Ages' Plantagenet times) and is now the seat of British government. In a government context, Westminster often refers to the Parliament of the United Kingdom, located in the UNESCO World Heritage Palace of Westminster - also known as the Houses of Parliament. The closest tube stations are Westminster, St James's Park on the Jubilee, Circle, and District lines. The area is the centre of UK government, with Parliament in the Palace of Westminster and most of the major Government ministries known as Whitehall, itself the site of the royal palace that replaced that at Westminster. Within the area is Westminster School, a major public school which grew out of the Abbey, and the University of Westminster, attended by over 20,000 students. Bounding Westminster to the north is Green Park, a Royal Park of London. ( London - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of London . Meters / Pay & Display The hours when Meter bays and Pay & Display bays are enforced on weekdays are from 8.30am until 6.30pm(with the exception of coach bays). After this time, it is free to park until 8.30am the following morning. On Saturdays, there are different controls in place depending on the zone you are in. You should check the meter or Pay & Display machine very carefully when you park to find out if you have to pay. You can check the hours of control for each zone here. Meters are always located within the bay for which they take payment. Always make sure you are back at your vehicle before the meter reads 'P 0.03'. The three minutes is an allowance we give as we recognise that your watch and the parking attendant's will vary. It is not a grace period and you should always aim to move your vehicle before the meter goes into penalty. You are not permitted to park on an out of order meter. If you are a disabled blue badge holder, you should be aware that the guidelines differ in Westminster and you are not eligible for free parking on meters or in Pay & Display bays. You must pay for parking, but will receive one additional hour of free parking once your paid for time has expired. Visit our disabled section for further details. You can park and Pay by Phone in some parts of Westminster if you don't have any coins. Yellow Lines Single and Double yellow lines carry the same restriction, but double yellow lines are enforced 24 hours a day. Some yellow lines are accompanied by kerb markings and timeplates. If you see these, this means that there is an exception to the usual hours of control. You should read the timeplate very carefully to find out whether you are permitted to park or carry out loading/unloading activity. Other Only buses, bicycles and taxis may drive through Oxford Street from 7am to 7pm or as indicated on the entry sign. You may not park within bus lanes, even if permitted to enter. Parking is not permitted on central reservations or footways, or within pedestrian areas. Vehicles may not wait to pick up passengers. Chauffeurs may not wait outside hotels, clubs etc and may receive a Penalty Charge Notice if they do so. Picking up and setting down of passengers within a bus stop is prohibited, unless driving a bus. New stickers show when suspensions are now longer required. Suspensions may not be used for parking - we do not suspend areas for this purpose. However, they may be suspended for loading and unloading purposes.

A first-person perspective London walk tour of The Strand in Central London. Experience all of the sights and sounds as Watched Walker (yes, I’m talking about myself in the third person) takes us on a walking tour through the streets of London, featuring the Strand, a major thoroughfare in the City of Westminster. The route begins by Charing Cross Station and travels up the Strand finishing close to Somerset House. Sights seen along the tour include The Savoy, Savoy Theatre, Adelphi Theatre, Vaudeville Theatre, and Saint Mary-le-Strand Church. And in each video I've hidden a blinking eye, can you spot it? (It could appear more than once). In addition to the blinking eye, I've also added the Watched Walker logo to various scenes–it could be on buildings, vehicles or any other objects, so keep an eye out for it too! The UK produces more than 434 million tonnes of rubbish every year, but over 60% of this can be recycled. Recycling is not complicated simply sort your recyclables into the correct bin, bag or basket. This prevents them from getting sent to landfills with other rubbish, and allows them to get remade into many useful products. Every item recycled makes a difference! All the information you need to recycle in Westminster is on this website. If you still have questions though, call us on 020 7641 2000 or contact the recycling team How do I recycle? How you recycle in Westminster depends on what kind of property you live in. Some areas have a doorstep service and some have large communal recycling bins. Doorstep recycling: Westminster's doorstep service collects recycling from your door once a week. You just need to collect all your recycling in you recycling bag or basket and leave it out for collection on the right day. Click here to find out if you have a doorstep service and when your collection is. If you need more information or you need a new basket or more disposable blue bags call us on: 020 7641 2000. What can I recycle? You can recycle all of the following items: Newspapers Magazines Junk mail including those with window envelopes! White and yellow telephone directories Flattened cardboard Computer paper All types and colours of glass bottles, but please remove the lids All types and colours of glass jars, but please remove the lids Drink cans Food cans Aerosol cans only if completely empty All plastic bottles, but please remove the lids For a full list of what you can recycle, visit the recycling A - Z. Unfortunately, the following items cannot be collected for various reasons: Yoghurt pots Microwave trays Vegetable plastic containers and trays Clingfilm Plastic bags all types Polystyrene packaging Tetrapak cartons these contain a mixture of materials and cannot be recycled with ordinary paper Broken glass (ie: broken drinking glasses and window panes) Glass used in light bulbs, windows, or cookware these are a different type of glass than the glass used to make bottles and jars Crisp and snack packets these contain a metal coated plastic film that is not recyclable despite resembling alumninum Coffee packaging as with crisp packets, these also contain a metal coated plastic film which is not recyclable Where does my recycling go? After recyclables are collected they are sent to a materials recovery facility where they are then separated by machines including magnets and infrared sensors. Recycled materials collected from Westminsters micro recycling centres are sent to different processing plants for each material. Once they have been sorted, different things happen to different materials: Paper and cardboard: Paper is cleaned, mulched and sent to a paper making machine where it is made into huge rolls. Recycled paper is often used to make newsprint for daily newspapers. Higher quality paper can be used as office paper and for publications. Cardboard is mulched and remade back into cardboard packaging for businesses to use again. Glass bottles and jars: Mixed glass recycling is used as an aggregate in road surfacing projects. This product is called 'glasphalt'. Westminster then uses glasphalt in some of the road resurfacing projects in the city. Drink cans and food tins: Aluminium cans and steel food tins are seperated by magnets. Alumninum cans are then sorted and compressed for reprocessing. After being crushed, shredded, heated and melted, pure aluminium is sent to can manufacturers who produce new drink cans for shops. Steel food tins are melted down to make new steel products. These can be anything from more tins, domestic appliances to yacht hulls and steel girders. Plastic bottles: Plastic bottles are generally recycled into products such as storage boxes, bins, fencing and drainpipes. Some of the more specialised products made from recycled plastic include 'eco-fleece' clothing and recycled stationery e.g. pencils.

Magical sound of the Westinster Abbey Church Bells ringing. A visit to Westminster Abbey in London should be a must on everyone's 'Things To Do In London' tourist itinerary. Located in the heart of the city of London, Westminster Abbey has played a central role in the life of Londoners and England for centuries. On a warm summer day the church bells of Westminster Abbey can be heard chiming across London. Notably, Kate Middleton and Prince Williams had their Royal wedding in the abbey. In this video tour, David Hill of New York Habitat (https://www.nyhabitat.com) explores the historic area of Westminster in London! As the political and cultural heart of London, Westminster houses the Palace of Westminster, which is the seat of government, as well as Buckingham Palace, which is the residence of the Royal Family. To the north, Westminster is bounded by Mayfair and Trafalgar Square; to the east and south by the River Thames; and to the west by Knightsbridge and Chelsea. In this video tour, we'll take you to the Houses of Parliament; Westminster Abbey; Buckingham Palace and more! The Houses of Parliament The tour starts at the Palace of Westminster, which is more commonly known as the Houses of Parliament. The Parliament have been meeting here since the 13th Century, and the first Royal Palace built on this site even dates back to the 11th Century! The present Palace was built in the 19th Century after the previous palace burned down. Both the House of Commons and the House of Lords meet in the Palace. The building, complete with the Elizabeth Tower or Big Ben, has become one of the most iconic landmarks in London. Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey was constructed almost a thousand years ago. Over the years it has seen numerous coronations and royal weddings. The most recent of these was the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. There are also a great number of national figures buried in the Abbey, including Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. The Abbey's cloister and gardens are also very much worth a visit. Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is also located in Westminster. Tourists come to the gates of the Palace every day to watch the Changing of the Guards in the courtyard. For some time in the summer you can even visit the Palace's staterooms. Even if you don't visit the inside of the Palace, it's quite a thrill to see the Royal Standard flag wave high above the palace, signaling the Queen is in residence. Stay in a Westminster Vacation Rental Apartment If you're looking for your own London residence; consider renting a vacation rental apartment! (https://www.nyhabitat.com/london-apartment/vacation) NY Habitat has many vacation rental apartments available in Westminster that will allow you to feel like a true London local!
