Fran Lebowitz: Books, Quotes, New York, Writing, Family, Literary Agent, Public Speaking (1996)

42:39
Frances Ann "Fran" Lebowitz (born October 27, 1950) is an American author and public speaker. Lebowitz is known for her sardonic social commentary on American life as filtered through her New York City sensibilities. Her books: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=tra0c7-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=96458231b69d25a8ec8d4aae2f9ab37d&camp=1789&creative=9325&index=books&keywords=fran%20lebowitz Some reviewers have called her a modern-day Dorothy Parker. Lebowitz was born and raised in Morristown, New Jersey. After being expelled from high school and receiving a GED, Lebowitz worked in many odd jobs before being hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview. This was followed by a stint at Mademoiselle. Her first book was a collection of essays titled Metropolitan Life, released in 1978, followed by Social Studies in 1981, both of which are collected in The Fran Lebowitz Reader. She has been known, in part, for Exterior Signs of Wealth, a long-overdue, unfinished novel, purportedly about rich people who want to be artists, and artists who want to be rich. She also made several appearances on Late Night with David Letterman and had a recurring role as Judge Janice Goldberg on the television drama Law & Order from 2001 to 2007. A heavy smoker, Lebowitz is known for her advocacy of smokers' rights. In September 2007, Lebowitz was named one of the year's most stylish women in Vanity Fair's 68th Annual International Best-Dressed List; she is known for wearing several distinctive pieces: Men's suit jackets tailored by the Savile Row tailor Anderson & Sheppard Wing-tip cowboy boots Men's white button down shirt Levi's 501 jeans Tortoiseshell glasses On November 17, 2010, she returned to The Late Show with David Letterman after a 16-year absence. She discussed her years-long writer's block, which she jokingly referred to as a "writer's blockade." On November 22, 2010, HBO debuted Public Speaking, a documentary about her by Martin Scorsese containing interviews and clips from speaking engagements. Lebowitz's upcoming book, Progress, was first excerpted in Vanity Fair in 2004 and in 2012 had a 2015 publication date. An automobile enthusiast, in 2011 Lebowitz owned and drove a vintage pearl gray 1979 Checker Marathon, which she kept in the East Village in Manhattan. Books: Metropolitan Life, Dutton, 1978. Orwellian Rules of Writing at The New York Times | Big Think

05:45
“Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.” –George Orwell http://www.pattberg.org/orwellian-rules-of-writing-at-the-new-york-times/ What’s the point in learning Chinese if you’ll never be given the opportunity to use it, as most Western schools, universities, publishers, and even The New York Times practice Orwellian Rules of Writing in order to keep their China reports “Chinese-free” — meaning pure, clean, and unpolluted. The New York Times, a US corporation dressed as global public service, is perhaps the most notorious offender to the world’s diversity of languages, foreign cultures, and non-Western people. All its writers and editors, letting alone outside contributors, are forced to “avoid foreign words” in their “submissions,” especially if it’s about foreign nations, their governments, and their (non-Western) people, wherever they can in order to keep the paper’s sovereignty over the definition of thought. (The NY Times must write from the position of highest authority, like the voice of an overlord and colonial master, which it cannot if the matter is discussed on foreign terms.) "I am all for the inclusion of foreign cultures, not their omission in our media. Foreign names, brands, and inventions must be allowed [and will be allowed some day, I’m sure of it] to show and to compete in US publications. Today, most foreign words are still banned. And almost 7 billion people whose languages are not English are silenced." [...] Note: This article about censorship at The New York Times had been posted on BIG THINK in New York on April 20th, 2015, and was censored a day later: http://www.east-west-dichotomy.com/orwellian-rules-of-writing-at-the-new-york-times/ Link to Daniel A Bell's 'Teaching 'Western Values' in China: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/17/opinion/teaching-western-values-in-china.html?_r=0 Thorsten J. On Writing Bestselling Nonfiction Books with Ghostwriter Michael Levin | PPP76

36:32
http://www.ebookpublishingschool.com As one of the most established ghostwriters in the nation, New York Times best-selling author Michael Levin has written, co-written or ghostwritten more than 100 books, of which eleven are national best sellers. He has also made contributions to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes.com, Politico, the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, the Jerusalem Post,Writers Digest, and CBS News. Michael taught writing classes at the University of California – Los Angeles and New York University. He even appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank in 2012. Michael always wanted to be a writer from the time he was a little kid. He first fell in love with storytelling when his father read Ask Mr. Bear and Winnie the Pooh to him. His choice of career solidified when he saw a film strip ingrade school of an author reading proofs of his book. That was when Michael said, “I want to be that when I grow up!” This interview covered a wide range of topics. Here are some of the takeaways: • The most important thing for any new writer is “behind-in-chair time.” • The importance of persistence • The key to production is low quotas. Michael told his students at UCLA to simply write two rotten double spaced pages a day. • Here’s a secret: you cannot write better than you can write, and you cannot write worse than you can write. Simply strive for quantity and you will get better. • Write every day. • Don’t put pressure on yourself. You’re going to have to overcome enough self-doubt anyway. Don’t make the burden greater. • What’s different about writing books today. • The short human attention span. • People will see you as a thought leader simply because you’ve written a book. • You don’t have to be published by a major publisher to get that respect. A lot of people don’t even know who the major publishers are. • How traditional publishers fail to understand the marketing equation. • How titles and subtitles work for nonfiction books. • What the table of contents is for in a nonfiction book • In terms of selling a book, the name of the author is secondary. The name of the publisher is immaterial. The primary concern of the reader is, “Will this book solve my problem?” • The importance of defining and selling to your niche audience. • The importance of defining what success looks like. • The importance of defining the purpose for writing your book. • How to use your nonfiction book to get more clients. • How to use your nonfiction book to prequalify your clients. • How to make a successful call to action. • The importance of generating a conversation with your reader. • How generous you need to be with your information. • How to structure a proper call to action chapter. • Drive people to your website throughout the book, and give them free stuff when they get there. • Build a relationship with your customer. • Keep your customer fascinated. • Prove your value by showing how you’ve helped your other customers solve their problems. • Emerson’s law of compensation. Simply put: You get what you give. • Make your information valuable and only sell other products at the end of the book. • How to answer the question: “should I self publish, or go with a traditional publisher?” • The pitfalls of traditional publishing. • How Amazon creates a level playing field. • The power of shorter books. • The value of calling your book a manual. • Don’t worry about being a best-selling author, be the best earning author. • The future of the book industry. Three Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning a Book. 1. Who is the specific niche audience for your book? Who are you trying to sell to? The truth is there is no mass market audience today for anything. 2. What is the next step you want people to take after reading your book? 3. What knowledge is in your head, that if your audience knew that you knew it, would cause them to take the next step with you? Kendrick Lamar talks Coming Up, New York, Jay Z, Writing Songs in Mom's Kitchen

08:28
http://www.hardknock.tv I was digging through our video vaults and found this Kendrick Lamar interview with the homies at Sound Session on KUBE 93.3 FM. This interview took place right before Kendrick put out GKMC so if you are just looking for Kdot's response to the control verse keep it moving. For those real fans out there interested to see Kendrick's progress its worth the watch. Backstage at Kube's Summer-jam Kendrick talks to DJ Hyphen and J. Moore about the first moment when he knew his career was going to take off. "I did a show in NY and people showed just as much love in NY as they did in LA. Thats when I knew it was bigger that just my own backyard. It can actually broaden out and touch everybody." When talking about the TDE team that helped put Kendrick on the map he mentions Top Dawg himself, Punch and Dave Free as some of the people behind the scenes that he has grinned with and starved with and allow him to stay focused on the music while they handle the business. "A lot of artists get it confused and thinking it's just them that gets em where they at...just them making the music. It starts with the music but there is no I in Team you can't go out here and put the music out yourself cause you have to always stay creative and stay in a space where you just stick to the music and not get caught up in the business side... I owe a lot of my success and where I'm at right now to the team around me." Kendrick goes on to say that Toronto is one of his favorite places to tour. "Toronto is crazy. The peoples was beautiful. The energy was there. They just showed a whole bunch of love. That was my first show outside the States. That's a memorable moment because it was on my birthday too...Think it was right around the time Section 80 had just dropped and they were singing it word for word man. It was a good thing." At the time of this interview Kendrick had just came back to the states from touring in Europe. "Its crazy to see how the music comes from a small little basement in a local city and travels over the water....Section 80...The OD...Knowing I wrote these songs in Compton and they all the way...you know people I thought I would never meet singing them." There is much more in this interview including Kendrick talking about the inspiration for the song "Cut You Off", Jay Z, Resolvable Doubt, Acting and other endeavors. If you haven't already, check out the interview we did with Kendrick at his studio. S/O to DJ Hyphen J. Moore and Karen Wild for the hospitality while we were in Seattle.
